Since the opioid crisis first began in 1991, opioid-related overdoses in the United States have continued to increase dramatically, killing nearly 47,000 people in 2018, and making it one of the most pressing issues in healthcare. The most reported reason for misuse of pain relievers was to relieve physical pain. The increase in opioid abuse has also led to an increase in patients seeking medication-assisted treatment (MAT).

At the height of the season, baseball and softball pitchers are playing 4-5 games a week and practicing on days without games. As a result, they put tremendous additive stress on their throwing shoulder and elbow joint.

This case utilized a novel, non-invasive osteopathic approach to improving shoulder mobility in a Division III athlete. If used on a regular basis, the shoulder mobility technique shows utility for athletes suffering from overuse injury. Our patient showed mild qualitative improvement, however they continue to use OMM as complementary treatment and describe a moderate qualitative improvement.

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is characterized by autonomic dysregulation resulting in diminished blood flow and excessive tachycardia.

POTS has been scarcely studied in the clinical setting. A review of literature generated only four articles, only one of which met the established criteria.

A follow up study to evaluate the effect of OMT on the quality of life for patients with POTS is planned. The hypothesis is that osteopathic manipulation plays a role in the management of POTS, as patients should experience improvement in their symptoms and their overall quality of life.

Osteoporosis is a disease state resulting in decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and increased risk of fracture, specifically of the vertebrae, spine and hip. Risk factors and high risk populations for developing osteoporosis include low BMD, long-term glucocorticoid therapy, genetics, diet, postmenopausal women and patients with inflammatory or chronic disease states. A variety of signaling pathways involving hormones, cytokines and other signaling molecules are involved in bone formation and are affected by long-term glucocorticoid therapy, leading to the development of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIO).

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which constitutional symptoms typically occur before joint swelling becomes a true clinical phenomenon. Weight loss, although common, is generally mild in nature and occurs after long standing inflammation. While large joints do become inflamed, RA has a much stronger predilection for the small joints. Our case is a rarity in the fact that there was initial large joint swelling without long standing inflammation. Additionally, the weight loss was cachectic in nature and extreme. Objective: Hyperglycemia was noted in pasireotide long-acting release (PAS LAR}-treated patients with acromegaly during clinical trials. We describe a clinical approach to hyperglycemia in a patient with acromegaly and diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) during PAS LAR initiation and treatment.

Methods: Clinical response to PAS LAR, including self­ monitored blood glucose (SMBG) levels, HbA1c, IGF-1, and adverse effects, was reported. Literature review was conducted to determine clinical guidelines for osteopenia management of immunocompetent patients in the primary care setting. It was concluded that pharmacological treatment should be offered to patients with osteopenia if they are considered high risk, which can be determined by utilizing the World Health Organization Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX^®) to evaluate 10-year risk. Patients with a calculated hip fracture probability of at least 3% or those with probability of 20% or more for all osteoporotic fractures may be offered bisphosphonate therapy.

Prostate cancer is stimulated to grow in response to testosterone. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) leads to chemical castration and suppression of prostate cancer cell production. Testosterone levels less then 300ng/ml decreases bone mineral density and could result in osteoporosis. Studies have shown that during the first year of ADT, fracture risk, mainly in hips and spine increases about 50%. In men, 40% of hip fractures result in death. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a cytokine with anti-inflammatory activities. IL-10 knockout (KO) mice exhibit severe intestinal inflammation in the presence of normal gut flora. We hypothesized that IL-10 KO mice would also be susceptible to inflammatory periodontal disease resulting in alveolar bone loss (ABL). The purpose of this study was to compare naturally occurring ABL in IL-10 KO and wild type (WT) mice. Twelve IL-10 KO and 12 WT mice, age-(7 months) and sex-(male) matched, were used. I. Review of the Literature and Description of a Regeneration Surgical Technique

This report provides an abbreviated review of the literature on treatment and prognosis of periodontal furcation lesions. In addition, it describes a surgical technique designed to accomplish bone regeneration in class II furcation defects, together with the rationale for the development of this procedure. Results of treatment of 30 defects with this technique are presented in a subsequent report (Gantes et al. 1987).
