Maternal mortality remains a significant issue in New Jersey, particularly in the Southern counties where rates are alarmingly high. This study investigates barriers faced by mothers in these areas, utilizing data from state health departments, as well as the CDC. Findings reveal clear disparities in healthcare access and resources, exacerbated by high poverty and rural settings. Proposed interventions include educational posters and community workshops to empower expecting mothers and families. However, challenges such as low attendance and limited effectiveness of interventions underscore the need for comprehensive, sustainable solutions to tackle maternal mortality in Southern New Jersey.

The purpose of this review is to explore perinatal ketamine’s potential for reducing postpartum depression after cesarean section. Articles reviewed from Pubmed, Cochrane, and Web of Science using specific search terms. 8 final papers were used for review after excluding duplicates and irrelevant titles and abstracts. Ketamine showed potential in reducing postpartum depression symptoms post C-section, although some studies reported no significant effects. All studies were randomized control trials. Ketamine may help prevent or lessen postpartum depression symptoms post C-section, but more research is needed to understand dosing and its casual relationship with PPD in this context.

Mature cystic teratomas (MCTs) constitute 70% of all ovarian neoplasms. They typically present with nonspecific symptoms such as pain and nausea. They account for approximately 2% of all primary ovarian malignant cancers and are predominately diagnosed via ultrasound. Computed tomography may be necessary if malignancy is suspected. Uterine torsion is defined as rotation of the uterus greater than 45 degrees in the long axis. Rotation can occur anywhere between 45 degrees to 180 degrees. We report a case of a 42-year-old female who presented with lower abdominal/pelvic pain and diagnosed with an active hemorrhagic ovarian cyst after undergoing egg retrieval as part of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. The differential for abdominal pain in women is vast, but for this patient receiving IVF we had to consider ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and ectopic pregnancy just to name a few examples. It is predictable that most women will suffer from a ruptured ovarian cyst at some point in their lifetime so long as they continue to menstruate.

The Direct Antigen Test (DAT) is used to find out if a newborn has maternally-produced antibodies against the newborn’s red blood cells. We discuss the case of a term newborn male with an O+ blood type born to a mother whose blood type is A+. As a part of routine screening, DAT of umbilical cord blood was obtained, which resulted positive. While the neonate had jaundice, the overall clinical picture pointed more toward neonatal physiological jaundice rather than a potential hemolytic anemia expected with a positive DAT. This discrepancy prompted us to review literature to explain our findings.

Ovarian torsion is a surgical emergency found in both pediatric and adult populations. It involves the full or partial rotation of the vessels that supply the ovary, resulting in ischemia. In this report, we present the case of a pediatric patient arriving to the Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) for evaluation of right lower quadrant (RLQ) abdominal pain, who was found to have an ovarian torsion. Wernicke’s encephalopathy (WE) is a neurological disorder secondary to thiamine deficiency that is precipitated by administration of glucose-containing fluids prior to thiamine supplementation. Though WE is typically diagnosed among alcoholics (12.5%), the prevalence among nonalcoholics can vary from 0.04-0.13%. Around 30-40% of patients with underlying thiamine deficiency will only experience one of the symptoms from the typical triad, with the complete triad (encephalopathy, oculomotor dysfunction/nystagmus, and ataxia) only evident among 5-16% of the population. Among the non-alcoholic patient population presenting with WE, a history of vomiting is more frequent. While nausea affects around 80% of pregnant women, an extreme form …
