Introduction: The ways in which women of society give birth have the power to influence maternal-infant health and shape the economy of the healthcare system. Today, the rates of cesarean sections are increasing throughout the world. In Argentina, on average, more than 35% of pregnant women received cesarean sections in 2008, with large differences observed in the rates between the public and private health sectors. The World Health Organization (WHO) has established that healthcare systems should only employ a cesarean section if labor cannot progress safely. Background: It is well documented in the medical education literature that students retain minimal anatomy knowledge when transitioning from pre-clinical didactics to clinical application on the wards. In a previous study at our own institution we were able to quantify this knowledge deficit in students on surgical clerkships, specifically surgery and obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN). Using our previous data, we designed an integrated, nested clinical teaching model utilizing e-modules to review clinically relevant surgical anatomy during their clinical rotations.

Inflammatory conditions characterized by excessive peripheral immune responses are associated with diverse alterations in brain function, and brain-derived neural pathways regulate peripheral inflammation. Important aspects of this bidirectional peripheral immune - brain communication, including the impact of peripheral inflammation on brain region-specific cytokine responses, and brain cholinergic signaling (which plays a role in controlling peripheral cytokine levels) remain unclear. To provide insight, we studied gene expression of cytokines, immune cell markers and brain cholinergic system components in the cortex, cerebellum, brainstem, hippocampus, hypothalamus, striatum, and thalamus in mice following an intraperitoneal lipopolysaccharide injection. Post-operative adhesion development occurs in the vast majority of patients following abdominal surgery and is a natural occurrence of peritoneal-wound healing. These fibrous bands may form within the first 5-7 days post-surgery and have the ability to cause a distortion in the normal anatomical positioning of abdominal organs. Consequently, adhesions are major contributors to small bowel obstruction, infertility, and severe pelvic and abdominal pain. Physiological processes responsible for adhesion formation remain obscure though it is believed to involve cell migration, proliferation, and differentiation of several cell types including mesothelial cells, fibroblasts, and inflammatory and immune cells. Conclusions: Liver recipients transplanted under the age of 21 are able to maintain pregnancy with 75% resulting in a livebirth. Pregnancy, potential risks for mother and newborn, and long-term maternal survival should be discussed with the recipient and the parents of the recipient. Transplant centers are encouraged to report pregnancy outcomes in these recipients to the NTPR.

Abstract

Background

Sulforaphane (SFN), an isothiocyanate phytochemical present predominantly in cruciferous vegetables such as brussels sprout and broccoli, is considered a promising chemo-preventive agent against cancer. In-vitro exposure to SFN appears to result in the induction of apoptosis and cell-cycle arrest in a variety of tumor types. However, the molecular mechanisms leading to the inhibition of cell cycle progression by SFN are poorly understood in epithelial ovarian cancer cells (EOC). The aim of this study is to understand the signaling mechanisms through which SFN influences the cell growth and proliferation in EOC.

A massive retroperitoneal hematoma caused by a retroperitoneal ectopic pregnancy is managed successfully utilizing multidisciplinary cooperation and transfusion of blood products. The authors report an unusual case of a retroperitoneal ectopic pregnancy presenting as a massive retroperitoneal hematoma in a hemodynamically unstable patient.

The purpose of this replication study was to examine how women with breast cancer reached their decision for surgical treatment (Ward, Heidrich and Wolberg 1989). Twenty-one women who met the surgical criteria, i.e. option for Breast Conserving surgery or Modified Radical Mastectomy, completed four surveys 1 to 7 days post operatively. The women were divided into two groups, 13 who had Breast Conserving surgery and 8 who had Modified Radical Mastectomy. Hysterectomy is the second (after cesarean section) most commonly performed major surgical procedure in the United States today.1 About [650,000 American women will have hysterectomies in 1989. Thirty-seven percent of all US women will have had a hysterectomy by the time they reach age 60. The number of hysterectomies increased dramatically Born 1965 to 1975, but then leveled off and decreased to the present level of about 7 per 1000 women.
