Neuroimmune Phenotyping As The Next Frontier In Chronic Pain Medicine For Musculoskeletal Back Pain, Samer G. Salman, Rohan A. Phadke, Adithya Nair, Rahul Kumar, Arbaz Momin, Alireza Tavakkoli, James Rizkalla

Department of Neurosurgery Posters

Background: Chronic low back pain encompasses heterogeneous mechanical, neuropathic, nociplastic, and myofascial presentations that may reflect distinct neuroimmune mechanisms. We synthesized evidence linking these phenotypes to measurable biological features and clinically relevant treatment strategies.

Methods: We conducted a structured literature search of MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for studies published from January 2005 through January 2025. Systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and mechanistic studies addressing neuroinflammation, glial activation, central sensitization, biomarkers, or imaging were organized according to four clinically relevant pain phenotypes and translational readiness.

Results: Neuroimmune findings differed across axial mechanical, …

Purpose: To investigate the interrelationship between body mass index (BMI), venous sinus pressure (VSP), and craniospinal elastance in determining lumbar puncture opening pressure (LP OP) in idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH).

Methods: A single-center retrospective chart review was conducted to identify patients who received venous manometry (8/2021-11/2025) followed by LP within 7 days before stenting. VSPs were measured at standardized locations, including the torcula (TP) and sigmoid/jugular (SIJ) sinuses. Elastance was calculated as (OP – closing pressure)/volume of CSF removed. Statistical analysis (JASP 0.19.3) was performed using generalized linear model (Gaussian identity; scaled center) to assess relationships between LP OP, BMI, …

Human Transferrin Receptor Bispecific Trem2 Antibody Creation And Its Insightful Use In Alzheimer's Disease, Amelia Mclaren, June Javens-Wolfe Oct 2025

Human Transferrin Receptor Bispecific Trem2 Antibody Creation And Its Insightful Use In Alzheimer's Disease, Amelia Mclaren, June Javens-Wolfe

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia, affecting an estimated 7.2 million seniors in the United States. AD can develop in the brain for twenty years or more before symptoms appear, such as memory loss, which could enable a diagnostic window for intervention. AD causes neurons to be damaged or destroyed due to the accumulation of amyloid-beta protein fragments and an abnormal form of tau protein. The protein Transmembrane Receptor Expressed by Myeloid Cells, TREM2, is essential in regulating the microglial response to amyloid-beta and tau accumulation in the AD brain. Microglia, the brain’s resident immune cell, has …

Discontinuous Or Attenuated Background, Absent Sleep Architecture, Absent Reactivity, And Presence Of Subclinical Seizures On Continuous Electroencephalography Are Associated With Unfavorable Short-Term Outcome Following Pediatric Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Xuexin Lu, Ara Hall, Yong Y. Han, Madeline Burdick, Avner Moeded, Isabella Boedefeld, Christian Kaufman, Jessica S. Wallisch

Presentations

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Accurate prognostication following pediatric severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) remains challenging. Adult neuroprognostication guidelines recommend the use of prediction models that have not yet been validated in pediatric patients. We hypothesized certain continuous electroencephalography (cEEG) characteristics would be associated with unfavorable short-term outcome. METHODS: This was an IRB-approved, 7-year retrospective cohort study of children aged 1.5-18 years admitted to our PICU from 01/2018-12/2024 with sTBI and receiving cEEG monitoring per institutional standard management protocol. cEEG patterns (background, sleep architecture, reactivity, and electrographic seizure) during the first 12-hours of monitoring were analyzed for association with unfavorable short-term outcome at PICU …

Dido Times In Anterior Lvo Ischemic Stroke, Greg Palmateer, Anthony Gasparotto, Angelique Manasseh May 2025

Dido Times In Anterior Lvo Ischemic Stroke, Greg Palmateer, Anthony Gasparotto, Angelique Manasseh

Posters

• Acute ischemic stroke is a major cause of death and disability. Every 30 minute delay in time from onset to treatment lowers the likelihood of a good outcome.1

• Door-in-door-out (DIDO) is defined as the duration from time of arrival at a primary stroke center (PSC) to time of discharge to a comprehensive stroke center (CSC) for mechanical thrombectomy(MT). Shorter DIDO time relates to improved outcomes.

• There is no standardized DIDO for ischemic stroke, though the American Heart Association (AHA) offers an ideal DIDO time of < 90 minutes for 50% or more of patients.2

A Retrospective Pilot Study Assessing The Concordance Between Referral Diagnoses, Referring Physician Specialty, And Emg/Ncv Results, Bodrul Islam, Daniel L. Menkes

  • Electromyoneurography (EMG/NCV) combines nerve conduction studies and needle electromyography.1 Patients are referred with a diagnostic hypothesis to be tested.
  • Nerve conduction studies assess large myelinated fibers, and needle EMG evaluates type I muscle fibers. Conditions affecting small fibers (e.g., neuropathic pain) or type II fibers (e.g., steroid myopathy) typically yield normal results, limiting the utility of EMG/NCV for their evaluation.1,2,3
  • Moreover, many patients are referred for EMG/NCV testing for nonspecific symptoms such as pain or numbness, often without objective neurological deficits.
  • This study was conducted to determine the concordance of the EMG referral with the provider’s specialty and the final …

The Differential Expands: Ataxia From Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Degeneration, Dominic Thomas, Md, Amy Dechet Jan 2025

The Differential Expands: Ataxia From Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Degeneration, Dominic Thomas, Md, Amy Dechet

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Introduction: Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration is a rare cause of cerebellar ataxia with a poor prognosis for neurologic recovery. The management of symptoms is dependent primarily upon timely diag nosis and treatment of the underlying neoplasm. Herein, we present the diagnostic and treatment course of a patient with paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration. Case: A 72-year-old woman with a past medical history of left mastectomy for high grade ER/PR negative Her2 positive invasive ductal carcinoma presented with progressively worsening dysarthria and ataxia over two months. A metabolic work up by her primary care physician was unrevealing. Breast MRI did not show recurrence of …

Return To Driving For Clients With Tbi: A Guide For Caregivers To Navigate Emotional Barriers Experienced By Clients, Brianna Dorsey, Mary Greer

Fall 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium

The project describes the building of an online resource for caregivers to have easily accessible resources regarding information about brain injuries, emotional barriers, and return to driving programs. Each section provides further resources for caregivers and is intended to help improve their care and medical literacy.
