Complete Surgical Excision Of Intramedullary Schwannoma At The Craniovertebral Junction In Neurofibromatosis Type-2, A A. Siddiqui, A A. Shah

Section of Neurosurgery

Intramedullary spinal schwannomas are extremely rare. We describe a case of a 13-year-old female who was found to have an intramedullary schwannoma at craniovertebral junction along with incidental bilateral acoustic neuromas, which was excised completely. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a case of intramedullary schwannoma in association with NF-2 located at the craniovertebral junction. The literature has been reviewed with emphasis on radiological imaging, histopathological diagnosis and technique to achieve complete microsurgical excision.

Peritumoral Cystic Meningioma, Arshad A. Siddiqui, Junaid Asharaf, Ahmed Ali Shah

Section of Neurosurgery

A case of 39 years old male is described who presented with headache, right-sided focal fits and decreased power in the right hand. CT scan brain showed a left fronto-parietal cystic lesion with centrolateral intramural nodule with homogenous enhancement. At surgery, the extra-axial lesion with cyst containing xanthochromic fluid had a well-defined capsule that could easily be separated from the peri-lesional cortical surface. The dural-based nodule with its cyst wall was resected in toto. The histopathology of mural nodule was reported as meningioma while the cyst wall histology revealed meningothelial cells.

Constitutive Alzheimer's-Type Tau Epitopes In A Neuritogenic Rat Cns Cell Line, Mary P. Lambert, Shasta Sabo, Chi Zhang, S. Ather Enam, William L. Klein

Section of Neurosurgery

Paired helical filaments (PHFs) of Alzheimer's disease (AD) largely comprise hyperphosphorylated forms of the cytoskeletal protein tau. AD-type tau phosphoepitopes, detected by various monoclonal antibodies, are absent from normal adult neurons, but recent studies have shown that their expression may contribute to neuritogenesis and axon differentiation in the developing nervous system. Therefore, we have examined a brain nerve cell line that is spontaneously neuritogenic for possible expression of AD-type tau epitopes. The neuritogenic rat brain cell line B103 was found to constitutively produce two AD-related epitopes of tau, detected by cellular immunofluorescence studies with the PHF-1 and Alz-50 monoclonal antibodies. …

Descriptive Enlargement Of Intracranial Aneurysms To A Critical Thickness For Rupture, G. Austin, X. Gong, Z. Suo

The Dr. George M. Austin Neurology Research Collection

''lntracranial Aneurysm: A model of expansion to critical thinning," Poster Presentation Annual Meeting of Biophysical Society, Wash., D.C., 1993, 9 p.

Most intracranial aneurysms (IA) are thinner at the apex; and 84% rupture at the apex. (Weir, 1987, Crompton, 1966). Minimum thickness of an unruptured aneurysm is reported 20 microns (Suzuki, et al 1980). We have developed a computer model of aneurysm enlargement starting from a vascular wall using the membrane elasticity equations of Green and Adkins, 1960 and Bogen & McMahon, 1978, and a computer solution with a new Fortran program by X. Gong. The relatively homogeneous wall (Austin, …
