Does Belatacept Improve Patient/Graft Survival After 1 Year Versus Calcineurin Inhibitor Based Regimens?, Ashlie Burns

PCOM Physician Assistant Studies Student Scholarship

Objective: The objective of this selective EBM review is to determine whether or not belatacept improves patient/graft survival after 1 year versus calcineurin inhibitors based regimens.

Study Design: Review of one randomized controlled trial published in 2010 and two randomized controlled trials published in 2011 were used for this review and selected based on their relevance to the clinical question.

Data Sources: Studies were found using PubMed, and Medline Plus. Outcomes Measured: All three studies measured patient/graft survival after 12 months as either a primary or secondary outcome.

Results: Vincenti et al (2010) showed belatacept to …

The Effects Of Dihydrobiopterin And Tetrahydrobiopterin On Hydrogen Peroxide And Nitric Oxide Release During Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (Eswl), Brittany Deiling Jan 2014

The Effects Of Dihydrobiopterin And Tetrahydrobiopterin On Hydrogen Peroxide And Nitric Oxide Release During Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (Eswl), Brittany Deiling

ESWL is an effective, non-invasive therapy utilized to fragment stones in the kidney and subsequently be cleared in the urinary tract. Although lithotripsy provides a safer alternative to invasive treatments for removing stones, ESWL may cause vasoconstriction after ESWL treatment, reducing renal blood flow, which can cause kidney damage leading to acute to chronic hypertension clinically. This may be due to kidney vascular endothelial dysfunction, which is characterized as increased oxidative stress and decreased endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS)-derived nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. We hypothesized that ESWL would decrease NO and increase hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in …

Is Omalizumab A Safe And Effective Treatment For Chronic Urticaria?, Ashley L. Davis

PCOM Physician Assistant Studies Student Scholarship

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this selective EBM review is to determine whether or not omalizumab is a safe and effective treatment for chronic urticaria.

STUDY DESIGN: Review of two randomized controlled studies and one crossover study. All three studies are published in English between 2008-2011.

DATA SOURCES: Two randomized, double blind, placebo controlled studies and one crossover study found using PubMed and EBSCOhost.

OUTCOMES MEASURED: Each trial measured the duration, size, number and/or intensity of wheals. This was done by using the urticaria activity score (UAS). Quality of life was also measured using Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), …
