The Association Of Hyponatremia With Race, Ethnicity, And Gender In Patients Admitted For Acute Decompensated Heart Failure Diagnoses, Vikas Sunder, Md, Rene Alvarez, Md, Evan Carabelli, Md

Division of Internal Medicine Faculty Papers & Presentations

Background: Hyponatremia, defined by a serum sodium concentration less than 135 mEq/L, is seen in approximately 25% of patients admitted with congestive heart failure (CHF). Hyponatremia on admission has been shown to increase in-hospital mortality and to be an independent predictor of 6month mortality. Prior work has shown that CHF patients with hyponatremia on admission are more likely to be Caucasian. Given its prognostic significance, hyponatremia and its association with patient characteristics warrants further study.

Methods: We queried for unique admissions to Temple University Hospital between 2011 and 2015 with a DRG code of "291-293" to represent a …

Validity Of Simple Risk Index And Evaluation Of Methods Andmanagement Of Acute Coronary Events To Predict Mortality Inacute Coronary Syndrome Patients In Intensive Coronary Careunit Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Rahmah Safitri Meutia, Sally Aman Nasution, Lukman H. Makmun

Jurnal Penyakit Dalam Indonesia

Introduction. Risk stratification is an important part in the management of patients with an Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) to avoid overtreatment or undertreatment. Although Simple Risk Index (SRI) and Evaluation of Methods and Management of Acute Coronary Events (EMMACE) have been validated in other countries, no study of its applicability has been performed in Indonesia with different patients’ characteristics. This study aims to obtain the calibration and discrimination performance of SRI and EMMACE to predict 30 days mortality in ACS patients in ICCU of Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. Methods. A retrospective cohort study with consecutive sampling was conducted in ACS patients …

Background-—To investigate heart failure (HF) hospitalization trends in the United States and change in trends after publication of management guidelines.

Methods and Results-—Using data from the National Inpatient Sample and the US Census Bureau, annual national estimates in HF admissions and in-hospital mortality were estimated for years 2001 to 2014, during which an estimated 57.4 million HF-associated admissions occurred. Rates (95% confidence intervals) of admissions and in-hospital mortality among primary HF hospitalizations declined by an average annual rate of 3% (2.5%–3.5%) and 3.5% (2.9%–4.0%), respectively. Compared with 2001 to 2005, the average annual rate of decline in primary HF admissions …

Validation Of Rapid Emergency Medicine Score (Rems) In Predicting30 Days Mortality In Elderly Visiting Emergency Department, Aulia Rizka, Kuntjoro Harimurti, Ceva W. Pitoyo, Soekamto Koesno Jun 2017

Validation Of Rapid Emergency Medicine Score (Rems) In Predicting30 Days Mortality In Elderly Visiting Emergency Department, Aulia Rizka, Kuntjoro Harimurti, Ceva W. Pitoyo, Soekamto Koesno

Jurnal Penyakit Dalam Indonesia

Introduction. Rapid Emergency Medicine Score (REMS) has been known as a useful instrument to stratify patients in emergency department (ED) based on its ability to predict short term mortality. As the clinical characteristics of elderly patients visiting ED are frequently aypical, validation of REMS in this specific population is very important. To measure predictive validity of REMS in elderly patients visiting ED Methods. Prospective cohort study in elderly visiting ED of Cipto Mangunkusumo between September to October 2016. Subjects were followed for 30 days after visiting ED. Calibration (Hosmer Lemeshow test), discrimination (Area Under ROC Curve) and REMS predictive value …

Association Of Glucose Variability In The First 72 Hours Of Icucare With Icu Mortality In Critically-Iii Patients, Elizabeth Yasmine, Arif Mansjoer, Dyah Purnamasari, Hamzah Shatri Mar 2016

Association Of Glucose Variability In The First 72 Hours Of Icucare With Icu Mortality In Critically-Iii Patients, Elizabeth Yasmine, Arif Mansjoer, Dyah Purnamasari, Hamzah Shatri

Jurnal Penyakit Dalam Indonesia

Introduction. Hyperglycemia during hospitalization is a risk factor that can be managed in order to reduce mortality. Inspite of hyperglycemia, glucose variability also brings negative outcome to cells. Studies about glucose variability effect to mortality had been studied using many variables of glucose variability. Methods. Retrospective cohort study is done to 280 critical ill patient in ICU and HCU in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital who admitted to critical care between January 2012-August 2013. MAG change and glucose standard deviation are divided into 4 quartiles. Relationship between MAG change and glucose standard deviation are analyzed using Chi Square test. To control the …

Clinical Predictors Of Mortality In Hospitalized Patients With Infective Endocarditis At A Tertiary Care Center In Pakistan, Sadia Arshad, Safia Awan, Syedah Saira Bokhari, M. Tariq Jan 2015

Clinical Predictors Of Mortality In Hospitalized Patients With Infective Endocarditis At A Tertiary Care Center In Pakistan, Sadia Arshad, Safia Awan, Syedah Saira Bokhari, M. Tariq

Department of Medicine

Objective: To evaluate the clinical characteristics and predictors of in-hospital mortality in patients with infective endocarditis at a tertiary care centre in Pakistan.
Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, from January 1, 2002, to December 31, 2006, and comprised 84 consecutive patients hospitalised with infective endocarditis,. All patients underwent verification of the diagnosis according to the Modified Duke criterion. Data was collected through a questionnaire and analysed using Student's t test, Chi square and Fisher's exact test. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to assess predictors of mortality.
Results:
Of the …

Spectrum Of Neurological Involvement In Adult Patients With Bacterial Endocarditis, Faisal Wasim Ismail, Muhammad Tariq, Mahboob Alam, Raymond A Smego

Section of Internal Medicine

Objective: To describe the spectrum of neurological involvement, and document in-hospital mortality in adult patients with bacterial endocarditis.
Design: Descriptive, non-interventional.
Place and duration of study: Department of Gastroenterology, The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi from November 1999 to October 2002.
Patients and methods: Patients were enrolled from the emergency and outpatient departments, using purposive, non-probability sampling, provided they fulfilled pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Case records of patients admitted to hospital with a diagnosis of bacterial endocarditis were prospectively analyzed. Data was entered and analyzed on SPSS 11. Frequency, Mean, Mode and Percentage were calculated.
Results: Neurological complications were …
