Background

Benign transient hyperphosphatasemia (BTH) in children is characterized by temporary highly elevated serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in the absence of liver or bone disease and a return to normal within 3 to 4 months. Since its first description in the 1950s, several cases of BTH in infants and children have been reported. Although there is no known etiology for this illness, it has been associated with viral infections. This condition has rarely been seen in the adult population, and there is scarce available information.
