Teaching Internal Medicine Residents About Genetics: One Topic At A Time - Breast Cancer, Maria Henry, Andrew Nance, Charles Macri Mar 2016

Teaching Internal Medicine Residents About Genetics: One Topic At A Time - Breast Cancer, Maria Henry, Andrew Nance, Charles Macri

GW Research Days 2016 - 2020

Background: Currently, the field of medicine is experiencing rapid changes in genetics and genomics information. While medical school curricula all include some genetics education, the content may vary from one school to another, leaving Internal Medicine (IM) residents with different skills and knowledge. In an IM residency where residents come from different medical schools, presenting an organized genetics curriculum may have value. Patients expect their physicians to be knowledgeable and current about their specific disease, including the genetic components and expect that they can inform them about terminology, inheritance, diagnostic testing, risks and benefits of testing. Physicians will need …

Effectiveness Of Iterative Interventions To Increase Research Productivity In One Residency Program., Richard Alweis, Suzanne Wenderoth, Anthony A. Donato

Reading Hospital Internal Medicine Residency

BACKGROUND: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requires residency programs to expose residents to research opportunities.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a series of iterative interventions to increase scholarly activity in one internal medicine residency.

METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the effectiveness of a series of interventions to increase resident and faculty scholarly productivity over a 14-year period was performed using quality improvement methodology. Outcomes measured were accepted regional and national abstracts and PubMed indexed manuscripts of residents and faculty.

RESULTS: Initially, regional meeting abstracts increased and then were supplanted by national meeting …

Triple Aim For Clinical Teachers (Tact): Faculty Physician Perceptions On Their Ability To Balance Clinical Quality, Trainee Learning, And Teaching Efficiency, Minuja Muralidharan, Anne Getzin, Kjersti E. Knox, Bonnie L. Bobot, Marie M. Forgie, Nicole P. Salvo, Deborah Simpson

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Background: A common challenge facing teaching physicians is balancing high-quality student and resident teaching with efficient, high-quality care and patient service. Publicly accessible clinic performance reports increasingly affect where patients seek care and demand that teaching clinics rise to consumer expectations while training future physicians to function in the modern health care workplace. Limited information is available to guide physicians to achieve the triple aim for clinical teachers (TACT): clinical quality/patient experience, trainee learning, and teaching efficiency.

Purpose: To understand clinical teachers’ TACT-related experiences, perceptions and preferences for how to learn TACT-associated skill sets to improve their competence as teachers. …
