Introduction. Heart failure is one of the major challenges in global health due to its significant contribution to morbidity and mortality. One of the pathophysiological aspects is autonomic nervous system dysfunction which can be monitored through heart rate variability (HRV) parameters. Ivabradine is a pharmacological agent that potentially improves the balance of sympathetic and parasympathetic tone. This study was designed to evaluate the impact of ivabradine administration on HRV parameters in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (≤40%) due to coronary heart disease in Indonesian population.
Methods. This study used a quasi-experimental research type with a pretest and posttest …

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States (US). However, the trends and disparities in ACS mortality are not well understood. This study aimed to analyze the ACS mortality in the US from 1999 to 2020 using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database. The age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMR) due to ACS were calculated for each year from 1999 to 2020, stratified by sex, race, urbanization, and state. The trends and disparities in AAMR were examined using descriptive statistics and graphical methods. The AAMR due …

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery
Background: Telemetry is an important clinical tool but it can be overutilized and leads to a higher cost of patient care and negative patient experience. We conducted this study to assess the effectiveness of our educational intervention in reducing inappropriate use of telemetry and to determine if there is any difference between the two types of educational interventions.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective in-patient study that included all non-ICU patients admitted on a randomly selected mid-week day at our hospital. A 2-step educational intervention was used separated by a 5-week period. The first, a PowerPoint presentation regarding the updated 2017 …

A wide range of morbidity and mortality is associated with obesity, with coronary artery disease being among the most common. Ischemic heart disease continues to be the primary cause of death in the United States. Taken together, interventions to minimize the detrimental effects of obesity on patients at risk of heart disease will not only benefit the patient, but the health care system as well.
Methods
In this retrospective study, we used the HCA Healthcare enterprise data warehouse to identify all adult patients who were …
Intermittent Fasting For Metabolic Syndrome Management, Tony Laborde
Intermittent Fasting For Metabolic Syndrome Management, Tony Laborde
Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science
This paper reviews the potential of intermittent fasting as a non-pharmacological therapeutic approach to the treatment of metabolic syndrome (MetS). MetS is a global health problem with risk factors that include obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and high triglycerides that predispose to cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Traditional treatment approaches, including pharmacological agents and lifestyle modification, are typically of short-term benefit. Intermittent fasting, with its scheduled cycles of eating and fasting, presents another strategy for improving weight control, insulin sensitivity, lipid profiles, and blood pressure. Various intermittent fasting regimens, including time-restricted feeding and alternate-day fasting, have …

Exploring Anticoagulant Prescription Disparities: A Focus On Hispanic Patient Care, Michael Acevedo, Vanessa Veltre
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Anticoagulants play a critical role in preventing thromboembolic events, yet disparities persist in their prescription among minority populations. This presentation explores inequities in anticoagulant prescribing patterns, with a specific focus on Hispanic patient care. Using retrospective electronic health record data, we analyzed the prescription rates of warfarin versus direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) among adults with clinical indications for anticoagulation. Our findings reveal that Hispanic patients are significantly less likely to receive DOACs compared to non-Hispanic White patients, even after adjusting for demographics, comorbidities, and insurance status. Contributing factors include language barriers, lack of insurance, and potential implicit bias in provider …

The Role Of Heart Rate Variability In The Management Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Scoping Review, Zarif A. Ladak, Krisha Patel, Dylan Bagley, Jeffery Powers
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Complications associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) have an unclear pathophysiology. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a potent modality for monitoring autonomic nervous system function and may give insight into the timing of flares and complication development. Existing literature suggests a link between IBD complications and inflammation as well as inflammation and HRV. However, research directly exploring the relationship between HRV and IBD complications is limited. This review aims to examine the state of the science as it pertains to the relationship between HRV and IBD complications highlighting current knowledge gaps to guide future research. A search was conducted using …

Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Background
Celiac disease has links to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and sarcoidosis. The latter 3 also have cardiovascular manifestations associated with them. However, there are limited studies on the in-hospital outcomes of Celiac disease with cardiac manifestations. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the hospital outcomes of Celiac disease with concomitant arrhythmias.
Methods
Patients aged 18 years with Celiac disease and arrhythmias (atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, ventricular tachycardia, and supraventricular tachycardia) versus Celiac Disease alone were identified from the US Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS), from the years 2019-2020. ICD 10 codes were utilized. Multivariate …

Research Symposium
Introduction: Cardiomyopathies (CM) are defined as myocardial disorders in the absence of coronary artery disease, hypertension, valvular or congenital heart conditions. Dilated CM is characterized by dilation and impaired contraction of one or both ventricles. The prevalence of this condition is underestimated because of variable disease expression and challenging diagnosis. We present the case of an undocumented and immunocompetent patient who debuted with acute heart failure after being exposed to significant environmental stressors.
Case Presentation: A 44-year-old Hispanic gentleman with a history of untreated hypertension presented to the ED with severely persistent left-sided chest pain at rest associated with frontoparietal …

Introduction Right ventricular thrombi are uncommon, usually found with concurrent pulmonary emboli and associated with significant mortality. They often originate from deep vein thrombi but may also be due to primary intracardiac processes . A right ventricular thrombus can be an unexpected marker for underlying malignancies, including esophageal cancer. This occurs due to the hypercoagulable state often induced by malignancy. Here we report a presentation where the identification of a right ventricular thrombus led to the diagnosis of esophageal cancer. Case Presentation Our patient is a 57-year old male with no past medical history who experienced an episode of dizziness …
