Patterns Of Tuberculosis In The Central Nervous System, Soobia Raza, Aliyah Sadaf, Faisal Fecto, Rushna Pervez Ali, Muhammad Ehsan Bari, Ather Enam

Medical College Documents

Tuberculous involvement of central nervous system (CNS), although not very frequent, results in severe morbidity. Tuberculosis (TB) is endemic in developing countries but even in developed countries, after an initial decline up until 1980’s, incidence of TB is on the rise. The AIDS epidemic, emergence of multi-drug resistant strains and immigration of people from endemic areas are some of the factors significantly contributing to this increase. Consequently, the burden of central nervous system tuberculosis has increased significantly worldwide.

A Vibrio Cholerae Classical Tcpa Amino Acid Sequence Induces Protective Antibody That Binds An Area Hypothesized To Be Important For Toxin-Coregulated Pilus Structure, Ronald K. Taylor, Thomas J. Kirn, Michael D. Meeks, Terri K. Wade, William F. Wade Oct 2004

A Vibrio Cholerae Classical Tcpa Amino Acid Sequence Induces Protective Antibody That Binds An Area Hypothesized To Be Important For Toxin-Coregulated Pilus Structure, Ronald K. Taylor, Thomas J. Kirn, Michael D. Meeks, Terri K. Wade, William F. Wade

Dartmouth Scholarship

Vibrio cholerae is a gram-negative bacterium that has been associated with cholera pandemics since the early 1800s. Whole-cell, killed, and live-attenuated oral cholera vaccines are in use. We and others have focused on the development of a subunit cholera vaccine that features standardized epitopes from various V. cholerae macromolecules that are known to induce protective antibody responses. TcpA protein is assembled into toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP), a type IVb pilus required for V. cholerae colonization, and thus is a strong candidate for a cholera subunit vaccine. Polypeptides (24 to 26 amino acids) in TcpA that can induce protective antibody responses have …

Revisiting Vaccine Hesitancy, Barriers And Motivators To Obtaining A Flu Vaccine In A New Covid-19 Pandemic World, Ann M. Mayo Rn, Dnsc, Faan, Steffanie R. Cobler Np

School of Nursing and Health Science: Faculty Scholarship

Purpose

To describe and compare patient perceived barriers and motivators and decision-making conflict between two groups of hospitalized patients, those who receive flu vaccines and those who do not.

Data Sources

Data collection during 2003 included extracting data from databases and mailing two surveys to 436 discharged patients. One hundred eight (108) patients participated in the study.

Conclusions

Top barriers included fear of side effects from vaccine (35%) and fear of contracting the flu (30%). Top motivators for obtaining a flu vaccine included previous vaccination (93%) and provider recommendation (62%). Barriers, motivators and patient decisional conflict differed depending upon patient …

The Major Subunit Of The Toxin-Coregulated Pilus Tcpa Induces Mucosal And Systemic Immunoglobulin A Immune Responses In Patients With Cholera Caused By Vibrio Cholerae O1 And O139, Muhammad Asaduzzaman, Edward T. Dartmouth Scholarship

Diarrhea caused by Vibrio cholerae is known to give long-lasting protection against subsequent life-threatening illness. The serum vibriocidal antibody response has been well studied and has been shown to correlate with protection. However, this systemic antibody response may be a surrogate marker for mucosal immune responses to key colonization factors of this organism, such as the toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP) and other factors. Information regarding immune responses to TCP, particularly mucosal immune responses, is lacking, particularly for patients infected with the El Tor biotype of V. cholerae O1 or V. cholerae O139 since highly purified TcpA from these strains has not …

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigated the impacts of sarA and agr on fnbA expression and fibronectin-binding capacity in Staphylococcus aureus in vitro and in experimental endocarditis. Although sarA up-regulated and agr down-regulated both fnbA expression and fibronectin binding in vitro and in vivo, fnbA expression was positively regulated in the absence of both global regulators. Thus, additional regulatory loci contribute to fnbA regulation and fibronectin-binding capacities in S. aureus.

Phylogenetic Analyses Of Texas Isolates Indicate An Evolving Subtype Of The Clade B Feline Immunodeficiency Viruses, Eric A. Weaver, Ellen W. Collisson, Margaret Slater, Guan Zhu Feb 2004

Phylogenetic Analyses Of Texas Isolates Indicate An Evolving Subtype Of The Clade B Feline Immunodeficiency Viruses, Eric A. Weaver, Ellen W. Collisson, Margaret Slater, Guan Zhu

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Rigorous phylogenetic analyses were used to compare the nucleotide sequences of feline immunodeficiency virus strains isolated from Texas and throughout the world. The envelope V3-V4 sequences and capsid gene of the Texas isolates formed a cluster between subtypes B and E. Statistical comparisons with other published sequences confirmed that the Texas group is a unique cluster, possibly a new subtype, arising from subtype B.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) was initially isolated in 1987 from a cat in California with severe immunodeficiency and has been recognized as a common worldwide feline pathogen (11, 14, 19, 20, 33). FIV-infected cats exhibit a …

Antimicrobial And Spermicidal Activity Of Hydrogen Peroxide And Nonoxynol-9 Based Gel Preparations, Paul E. Grimmett Jan 2004

Antimicrobial And Spermicidal Activity Of Hydrogen Peroxide And Nonoxynol-9 Based Gel Preparations, Paul E. Grimmett

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Eighty gel formulations were prepared using five buffer systems (0.01M citrate, 0.02M citrate, 0.01M tartrate, 0.02M tartrate, and 0.01M citrate/0.01M tartrate), four hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentrations (0%, 0.3%, 0.9%, and 1.2%), and four nonoxynol-9 (N-9) concentrations (0%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2%). The eighty gel formulations were then tested for physio-chemical properties (viscosity and pH), antimicrobial effectiveness (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration Assay) against Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, and Streptococcus agalactiae, and finally, spermicidal effectiveness (Sander Cramer Assay). The gel formulation that contained the best combination of physio-chemical, antimicrobial, and spermicidal properties was a 0.01M citrate buffered hydrogel, which contained 0.9% H2O2 and …

Cd46-Mediated Transduction Of A Species D Adenovirus Vaccine Improves Mucosal Vaccine Efficacy, Zenaido T. Camacho, Mallory A. Turner, Michael A. Barry, Eric A. Weaver Jan 2004

Cd46-Mediated Transduction Of A Species D Adenovirus Vaccine Improves Mucosal Vaccine Efficacy, Zenaido T. Camacho, Mallory A. Turner, Michael A. Barry, Eric A. Weaver

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The high levels of preexisting immunity against Adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) have deemed Ad5 unusable for translation as a human vaccine vector. Low seroprevalent alternative viral vectors may be less impacted by preexisting immunity, but they may also have significantly different phenotypes from that of Ad5. In this study we compare species D Ads (26, 28, and 48) to the species C Ad5. In vitro transduction studies show striking differences between the species C and D viruses. Most notably, Ad26 transduced human dendritic cells much more effectively than Ad5. In vivo imaging studies showed strikingly different transgene expression profiles. The …
