Health Equity and Quality Improvement (HEQI) Summit

Background and Problem

Viral hepatitis disproportionately affects historically marginalized populations, with less than one-third of high-risk patients receiving appropriate screening. Racial and ethnic minoritized groups, rural residents, and PWID face significant disparities in both testing and treatment.

Paradoxically, while underserved populations remain undertested, providers frequently order inappropriate hepatitis tests, particularly acute- phase markers like HAV IgM and HBV core IgM, in clinical situations where guidelines do not indicate their use. This pattern of inappropriate testing is partly driven by provider uncertainty regarding the selection of appropriate serologic tests from a complex array of options. Clinical decision support (CDS) within computerized …

Health Equity and Quality Improvement (HEQI) Summit

Background

  • Adequate bowel preparation is crucial for obtaining a high-quality colonoscopy.
  • Inadequate preparation leads to impaired visualization, which can lower adenoma detection rate, increase the risk of complications and potentially necessitate repeating the procedure.1
  • Patients with higher health literacy and a higher level of education have been associated with better bowel preparation quality.2,3,4,5

Health Equity and Quality Improvement (HEQI) Summit

Background

  • Over the past decade there has been a paradigm shift in solid organ transplantation with the use of Hepatitis C (HCV) positive donor organs for HCV negative recipients.
  • This evaluation looks through the lens of insurance approval for direct acting antivirals (DAA) and the process needed for obtaining and ensuring affordability of these medications.
  • While the AASLD/IDSA guidelines recommend early initiation of pangenotypic DAA therapy after organ transplant without the need to confirm recipient viral replication many centers often initiate the DAA approval process after viremia is detected due to insurance barriers.1
  • The process for obtaining insurance approval …
