Background: Wilson’s disease is a rare genetic disorder characterized by copper accumulation, leading to multi-organ symptoms. It affects between 1 in 30,000 to 1 in 100,000 individuals, with a mean age at diagnosis of 13.2 years. The diagnosis may be overlooked due to its numerous presentations, which can range from non-specific symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and behavioral changes to fulminant hepatic failure. Its clinical manifestations vary widely, making diagnosis during pregnancy particularly challenging. Wilson’s disease complicates pregnancy, as untreated cases can lead to significant morbidity and mortality; excess copper can disrupt metabolic processes and contribute to recurrent miscarriages.

Background: The past four decades have seen a steady increase in thyroid cancer in the United States (US). This study investigated the impact of the American Thyroid Association (ATA)'s revised cancer management guidelines on thyroid cancer incidence trends and how the trends varied by socioeconomic, histologic, geographic, and racial and ethnic characteristics from 2000 to 2020.

The maintenance of homeostasis and rapid regeneration of the urothelium following stress are critical for bladder function. Here, we identify a key role for IFRD1 in maintaining urothelial homeostasis in a mouse model. We demonstrate that the murine bladder expresses IFRD1 at homeostasis, particularly in the urothelium, and its loss alters the global transcriptome with significant accumulation of endolysosomes and dysregulated uroplakin expression pattern. We show that IFRD1 interacts with mRNA-translation-regulating factors in human urothelial cells. Despite increasing prevalence of hypertension in youth and high adult cardiovascular mortality rates, the long-term consequences of youth-onset hypertension remain unknown. This is due to limitations of prior research, such as small sample sizes, reliance on manual record review, and limited analytic methods, that did not address major biases. Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) has become an invaluable tool in modern medical practice offering real-time diagnostic and procedural guidance for anesthesia providers. POCUS is a non-invasive assessment tool that gives anesthesia insight into a quantitative assessment of gastric residuals. Furthermore, POCUS assessments are useful in preventing anesthetic complications that can cause major morbidity and mortality such as aspiration pneumonia. Introduction Metabolic-dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common liver disease in children in the United States and, when left untreated, can progress to liver fibrosis. Clinicians currently utilize imaging and biopsy to assess fibrosis in this patient population as there is no validated serum biomarker available for detecting fibrosis. OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to determine continuation rates of stress ulcer prophylaxis (SUP) upon transfer from a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) to a general medicine unit and upon hospital discharge. Addressing drug-induced liver injury is crucial in drug development, often causing Phase III trial failures and market withdrawals. Traditional animal models fail to predict human liver toxicity accurately. Virtual twins of human organs present a promising solution. We introduce the Virtual Hepatic Lobule, a foundational element of the Living Liver, a multi-scale liver virtual twin. This model integrates blood flow dynamics and an acetaminophen-induced injury model to predict hepatocyte injury patterns specific to patients. Maternal separation (MS) in mice results in behavioral deficits and gut microbiota dysbiosis that all persist into adulthood. Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 modulates gut microbiota, alters systemic metabolites, and facilitates immune regulation. To assess the effect of DSM 17938 on biochemical and behavioural stress-associated changes, newborn mice were exposed to unpredictable MS (MSU) daily from day 7 to day 20 of life, with intragastric administration of DSM 17938 or PBS as control. Background: Non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD) may be associated with cardiovascular diseases; however, only a few studies have analyzed this relationship. We aimed to assess the epidemiologic data and the association between NAFLD and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in the United States. Methods: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database 2016-2019 was queried using ICD10-CM diagnostic codes to identify hospitalizations of AMI + NAFLD. Essential demographic variables were analyzed to determine the disparities in the prevalence of AMI hospitalizations and deaths among NAFLD patients. We present a comprehensive systematic review of the incidence, management, and clinical course of irAEs across the entire GI system, including the luminal GI tract, liver, and pancreas. Temporary esophageal stents are an important and effective treatment for benign esophageal strictures, such as those caused by caustic ingestions. Fully covered self-expanding metal stents (FCSEMS) provide the benefit of continuous dilation pressure over longer periods of time compared to bougie or balloon dilation. However, stent migration is the most common complication and can be observed in up to 40% of patients, especially with FCSEMS and in refractory strictures. Following recent reports of norovirus replication in salivary gland cells, we examined whether the prototype norovirus strain, Norwalk virus (GI.1), could be detected in the saliva of 21 experimentally infected persons. Viral RNA was not detected in saliva 2 and 7 days after challenge despite high levels being present in feces.

Helicobacter pylori disturbs the stomach lining during long-term colonization of its human host, with sequelae including ulcers and gastric cancer1,2. Numerous H. pylori virulence factors have been identified, showing extensive geographic variation1. Here we identify a ‘Hardy’ ecospecies of H. pylori that shares the ancestry of ‘Ubiquitous’ H. pylori from the same region in most of the genome but has nearly fixed single-nucleotide polymorphism differences in 100 genes, many of which encode outer membrane proteins and host interaction factors. IMPORTANCE: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is an increasing cause of cirrhosis. Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are effective in improving liver inflammation in patients with MASLD.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether use of GLP-1 RAs is associated with lower risk of developing cirrhosis and its complications, including decompensation and hepatocellular cancer (HCC), among patients with MASLD.
