Aims for Improvement

• Our aim was to evaluate the variables involved in room turnover and identify any delays that lead to the time difference found between inpatient and outpatient rooms.
• We planned to design an intervention to improve efficiency in the endoscopy suite and complete more inpatient cases.
• We predicted that completion of more inpatient cases would subsequently decrease the need for cancellation and rescheduling of medically necessary cases on a daily basis.

Through this quality improvement project, we have assessed the current fellows' upper endoscopy skill level during their first year and determined that the time to achieving proficiency is significantly longer than desired. The goal is to prepare new fellows for endoscopy prior to the beginning of their rotations with a curriculum that includes assigned reading materials, videos, and simulated endoscopic cases, to promote safety and increase satisfaction of patients by improving the readiness, skill level, and the confidence of first year inexperienced fellows.

Introduction: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most common GI functional disease in the US, affecting 10-25% of the population and costing ~$1.6B in annual healthcare spending. Defined by varied GI symptoms, IBS is associated with gut inflammation from many factors, including diet, microbiome imbalances, and stress. However, the disease lacks a treatment algorithm, especially within integrative medicine.

Objective: This research explores integrative medicine approaches to IBS, including diet and supplements, to identify microbiome and symptom patterns before and after intervention.

Although neurogastroenterology and motility (NGM) disorders are some of the most frequent disorders encountered by practicing gastroenterologists, a structured competency-based training curriculum developed by NGM experts is lacking. The American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society (ANMS) and the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (ESNM) jointly evaluated the components of NGM training in North America and Europe.
