Child Exploitation Through Online Sharing: “Sharenting” And The Role Of The Pediatric Provider, Stacey Steinberg, Cameron Rosenthal Jan 2026

Child Exploitation Through Online Sharing: “Sharenting” And The Role Of The Pediatric Provider, Stacey Steinberg, Cameron Rosenthal

UF Law Faculty Publications

The alarming trend of “sharenting” highlights the need for increased vigilance in protecting children from online exploitation. When parents share intimate details about children’s lives on social media, they may inadvertently expose them to danger. Pediatricians are equipped to safeguard children from parental abuse and neglect; however, they are less prepared to protect children from harm caused by parents online.

When parents exploit children on social media, pediatricians face challenges in protecting patients while also following laws that maintain parental autonomy. Using a child welfare framework, this article defines these online harms and proposes strategies for protecting children from exploitative …

Wastewater testing for SARS-CoV-2 provided useful public health information during the COVID-19 pandemic yet was underutilized in rural communities. We addressed this gap by implementing wastewater surveillance and assessing its performance in 10 communities in Eastern Kentucky. We collected wastewater samples 1–2 times weekly at 10 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) from May 2021 until April 2023 and measured SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations using polymerase chain reaction testing. We calculated time-lagged correlations between wastewater concentrations and county-level reported COVID-19 cases by site. We developed a generalized linear model to estimate COVID-19 incidence from wastewater SARS-CoV-2 concentrations. The 10 participating WWTPs served 2430 …

Perceptions Of The Proposed Food And Drug Administration Graphic Cigarette Warnings Among Adults Who Smoke On A Nondaily Or Daily Basis: A Within-Subjects Experiment, Bethany Shorey Fennell, Renee E. Magnan, Jennifer I. Vidrine, Damon J. Vidrine

Family and Community Medicine Faculty Publications

Introduction: People who smoke nondaily represent nearly one third of U.S. adults who smoke and experience significant smoking-related morbidity and mortality, yet they are rarely considered when evaluating the efficacy of graphic cigarette warnings.

Method: In October 2019, U.S. adults who smoked nondaily ( n =59) and daily ( n =183) evaluated 13 Food and Drug Administration–proposed graphic warnings and 13 equivalent text-only warnings on the extent to which they elicited understanding, perceived new knowledge, worry about smoking, and discouragement to smoke and were believable. Repeated-measures ANOVA and planned comparisons tested for between-subjects (smoking status) and within-subjects (warning type) effects. …

Impact Of A Resident-Created Family Medicine Clerkship Guide On Medical Student Preparedness, Shana-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Tasaduq Mir, Fredricka Barr Jan 2026

Impact Of A Resident-Created Family Medicine Clerkship Guide On Medical Student Preparedness, Shana-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Tasaduq Mir, Fredricka Barr

North Texas GME Research Forum 2026

BACKGROUND: Third-year medical students enter the family medicine clerkship with strong foundations in the basic medical sciences. However, they can feel underprepared to meet the demands of outpatient care, including navigating clinic workflows, documenting efficiently, and leading patient-centered visits. This transition-to-clerkship learning curve may contribute to stress during a critical phase of clinical development. Structured educational support during this transition has the potential to enhance learner confidence, promote meaningful learning, and foster positive engagement with family medicine. Through resident-led quality improvement, this project aimed to improve medical student preparedness and confidence for the family medicine clerkship using a resident-created intervention. …

Too Young For A Broken Heart: Stemi At Twenty, Shana-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Jason Thompson Jan 2026

Too Young For A Broken Heart: Stemi At Twenty, Shana-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Jason Thompson

North Texas GME Research Forum 2026

Background: ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is exceptionally rare in young adults, accounting for less than 1% of acute coronary syndromes in individuals younger than 35 years. When it occurs in early adulthood, particularly among women, it introduces diagnostic uncertainty and exposes gaps in post-discharge continuity of care. This case of a 20-year-old female with STEMI highlights the role of primary care in preserving evidence-based therapy while addressing psychosocial determinants of recovery.

Case Presentation: A 20-year-old female presented to her primary care clinic for post-discharge follow-up after hospitalization for an anterior STEMI that began with sudden-onset substernal chest pain radiating to …

North Texas GME Research Forum 2026

BACKGROUND: School nurses play a vital role in safeguarding the health and safety of children by serving as frontline providers within the school setting. Timely recognition and appropriate management of acute medical conditions can reduce morbidity, prevent unnecessary emergency department utilization, and improve long-term outcomes. Needs assessment surveys identified knowledge and confidence gaps among school nurses related to pediatric seizure management and pediatric cardiology.

METHODS: This prospective educational quality improvement initiative was conducted across the Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) region during the 2025-2026 academic year. Over 25 residents served as curriculum developers and educators, creating and delivering evidence- and case-based education …

Introduction:

Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in children aged 12 to 18 months are prevalent conditions that, if not identified and treated early, are associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Purpose:

This quality improvement project evaluated the impact of a standardized screening and follow-up protocol on laboratory result retrieval, provider review, and caregiver follow-through in a military pediatric clinic.

Method:

A pre-post intervention design guided by the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework was implemented over 11 weeks and included staff education, standardized workflows, and caregiver outreach.

Results:

The intervention improved laboratory completion and caregiver follow-up rates; however, sustainability was limited by staffing constraints …

Empowering Dietary Change: A Culturally Competent Nutrition Intervention For Hispanic Patients At The Agape Clinic, Ariana N. Smith

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes disproportionately affects Hispanic adults and may be more difficult to manage among uninsured and underserved populations experiencing barriers to healthcare, nutrition education, and culturally appropriate resources. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice quality improvement project was to implement and evaluate a brief, culturally tailored nutrition education intervention for Hispanic adults with elevated A1C receiving care at The Agape Clinic in Dallas, Texas. A quantitative, quasi-experimental, within-subject design was used. The intervention provided bilingual, low-literacy education focused on A1C, portion control, added sugars, and culturally familiar foods. Thirty-eight participants enrolled in the project, and 11 …
