Mental Wellbeing Of Family Caregivers Of People Living With Mental Illness In Kenya: Who Cares? A Cross-Sectional Study, Norah Obungu, Fleur Meijer, Stanley Luchters

Family Medicine, East Africa

Background Although about 60% of patients with chronic mental health disorders in sub-Saharan Africa live with their relatives, burden amongst family caregivers has not been studied much. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with caregiver burden among family caregivers of patients with chronic mental illness attending two psychiatric care facilities in Nairobi, Kenya.

Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 284 systematically sampled participants who completed a socio-demographic questionnaire and the Zarit Burden Interview. Moderate to severe burden was defined as a ZBI score > 41. Independent associations were examined using bivariable and multivariable …

Patient Wait Time And Throughput Interventions In The Cardiology Outpatient Setting, Chioma Ohiri Tawose Feb 2026

Patient Wait Time And Throughput Interventions In The Cardiology Outpatient Setting, Chioma Ohiri Tawose

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Healthcare collaboration and patient care require effective communication. Poor communication impacts wait time. Inadequate communication in the outpatient cardiology clinic can lead to disruptive patient throughput, or workflow, and extend patient length of visit. The purpose of this project was to implement a means of communication for clinicians and healthcare assistants to improve patient flow and cut down idleness, ultimately reducing patient wait time. The project established the incorporation of a built-in electronic health record communication notification system, the Event Button, for asynchronous communication between staff. A quantitative quality improvement design was used to conduct this project. Inferential and descriptive …

Disease Burden Of Asthma Patients Utilizing Short-Acting Beta-2 Agonist-Only Inhalers As Rescue In The United States, Njira Lugogo, Rena C. Moon, Yen Chung, Joy David, Omar Motawakel, Ning A. Rosenthal, Neil Skolnik

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

Purpose: We aimed to describe the disease burden of asthma and examine relationships between short-acting beta-2 agonist (SABA) use and asthma exacerbations. Patients and Methods: This retrospective cohort study used geographically diverse Premier Healthcare Database (PHD) and linked insurance claims (10/01/2021-09/30/2022) for US patients aged ≥18 years with a SABA-only prescription and a history of asthma exacerbation within 12 months before index date (the earliest SABA prescription date). Three asthma control groups were defined based on SABA usage: well controlled-low (0–1 prescriptions), not well controlled-medium (2–3 prescriptions), very poorly controlled-high (≥4 prescriptions). Four asthma severity groups were defined using asthma …

Use Of Preference Signals In Family Medicine Residency Recruitment, John E. Snellings, Hanwen Miao, Daniel L. Meyer, Miranda A. Moore

Department of Family and Community Medicine Faculty Publications

Background and Objectives: Increases in graduate medical education application volume led to the introduction of preference signaling—a tool within the Electronic Residency Application Service that allows applicants to signal their sincere interest to a limited number of programs. This study aims to evaluate how family medicine program directors used preference signals during the 2023–2024 recruitment season, the first year this tool was available to family medicine programs. Understanding program director perspectives on preference signal utility is crucial for determining the tool’s impact on the residency selection process.

Methods: Data were collected through the Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research …

Beyond The Assumption: A Comparison Of Resident And Attending Prescribing Errors In Ambulatory Care, Shana-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Megan Wesling, Keneisha Houston, Isabel Vecino, Tasaduq Mir

North Texas GME Research Forum 2026

BACKGROUND: Medication prescribing errors remain a leading cause of preventable patient harm in ambulatory care. This study examined whether the severity, frequency, and distribution of medication prescribing errors differ between residents and attendings in outpatient settings to inform graduate medical education (GME) and system-level medication safety strategies.

METHODS: This retrospective observational study was conducted across a multi-specialty ambulatory care network. Ambulatory medication-related events involving residents and attendings occurring between January 1 and December 31, 2025, were identified through voluntary reporting in a cloud-based risk management system. Events were categorized by prescriber role and classified using the National Coordinating Council for …

Concurrent Hnf1a (Mody3) And Pdxi (Mody4) Variants In A Young Adult And Critical Therapeutic Implications, Shay-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Matthew Doan, Megan Wesling Jan 2026

Concurrent Hnf1a (Mody3) And Pdxi (Mody4) Variants In A Young Adult And Critical Therapeutic Implications, Shay-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Matthew Doan, Megan Wesling

North Texas GME Research Forum 2026

BACKGROUND: Monogenic diabetes accounts for approximately 1–5% of diabetes cases and is frequently misclassified. Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) includes 14 subtypes with distinct pathophysiology and therapeutic implications. Digenic MODY, caused by pathogenic variants in more than one MODY gene, occurs in well under 1% of cases and poses unique diagnostic and management challenges. We report the first known case of concurrent HNF1A (MODY3) and PDX1 (MODY4) mutations, highlighting important clinical and therapeutic considerations.

CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old male with digenic MODY due to MODY3 (HNF1A) and MODY4 (PDX1) mutations presented for team-based adult outpatient diabetes management following transition …

Efficacy Of Zuranolone In The Treatment Of Postpartum Depression: An Evidence-Based Review, Shana-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Tasaduq Mir Jan 2026

Efficacy Of Zuranolone In The Treatment Of Postpartum Depression: An Evidence-Based Review, Shana-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Tasaduq Mir

North Texas GME Research Forum 2026

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common and potentially severe condition frequently managed in primary care, where delayed treatment adversely affects maternal and infant outcomes. Neuroactive steroid therapies targeting γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptors represent a novel therapeutic class. Brexanolone, the first FDA-approved treatment for PPD, required prolonged inpatient administration and was withdrawn from the U.S. market in 2025. Zuranolone is currently the only FDA-approved medication specifically indicated for PPD, offering a short-course oral treatment suitable for outpatient use. This review evaluated the efficacy of zuranolone and its applicability in primary care practice.

METHODS: This evidence-based review was conducted in …

Rethinking Acute Pain Management: Evidence For Suzetrigine As An Opioid-Sparing Strategy In Outpatient Care, Shana-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Tasaduq Mir Jan 2026

Rethinking Acute Pain Management: Evidence For Suzetrigine As An Opioid-Sparing Strategy In Outpatient Care, Shana-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Tasaduq Mir

North Texas GME Research Forum 2026

BACKGROUND: The ongoing opioid epidemic underscores the urgent need for effective nonopioid options for acute pain management. Suzetrigine, a selective voltage-gated sodium channel NaV1.8 inhibitor, represents a mechanistically novel analgesic targeting peripheral nociception and may reduce reliance on opioid therapy. It received FDA approval on January 30, 2025, for the treatment of moderate-to-severe acute pain in adults. This evidence-based review evaluates the efficacy and safety of suzetrigine as an opioid-sparing option for outpatient acute pain management.

METHODS: A structured literature search of PubMed was conducted from database inception through January 2026 using the terms “suzetrigine” and “NaV1.8.” Eligible studies were …
