Outcomes In Type Ii Diabetes Patients Through The Covid 19 Pandemic A Retrospective Chart Review, Zurwa Nishat, Tara Pellegrino, Robert Steer
Outcomes In Type Ii Diabetes Patients Through The Covid 19 Pandemic A Retrospective Chart Review, Zurwa Nishat, Tara Pellegrino, Robert Steer
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Context: The COVID-19 pandemic provided a unique opportunity for urgent expansion of telemedicine services as providers continued to supply longitudinal care to patients. Patients with type II diabetes were vulnerable to serious infection with COVID-19 as well as disruption in management of their chronic disease.
Objective: To delineate the outcomes in type II diabetes patients through the COVID-19 pandemic by a retrospective chart review in which disease management was evaluated through HbA1c levels and BMI.
Methods: This retrospective chart review included adult T2DM patients receiving care from five university family medicine offices in NJ. HbA1c levels and BMI values were …
Pathophysiology, Presentation, And Management Of Interstitial Cystitis In The Acute Setting, David Koziel
Pathophysiology, Presentation, And Management Of Interstitial Cystitis In The Acute Setting, David Koziel
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Interstitial cystitis (IC) also known as bladder pain syndrome (BPS) and more infrequently by other monikers represents a debilitating disease with a poorly understood pathophysiology. According to the Centers for Disease Control the incidence of IC ranges from 1 to 5.1 cases per 100,000 individuals. While a relatively rare condition, it is common enough that the provider in the acute setting recognizes the pathophysiology and is familiar with the management of this condition. It is a disease that is more prevalent in women, however men can also be affected. Due to the significant overlap with more common conditions, it is …

Outpatient Breast Cancer Screening Documentation, Christoffer A. Amdahl, Jeremy Smith
Outpatient Breast Cancer Screening Documentation, Christoffer A. Amdahl, Jeremy Smith
North Texas GME Research Forum 2023
Introduction: Over 264,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed annually within the United States, with 99% of them being in women. Regarding prevention of this terrible disease, early detection of such cancers through screening mammography has up to a 20% reduction in breast cancer mortality. Therefore, the USPSTF recommends screening of women who are 50-74 years of age via mammography at average risk of breast cancer every two years. The goal of this study was to measure, track, and increase compliance with these screening recommendations within the Medical City resident clinics.
Method: Family medicine residents working were presented with a …

This is a unique case of a 38 year old Caucasian female with no significant medical history who presented to the hospital with complaint of 3 days of abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, dark red formed stool, and fever (TMax 102F), as well as dizziness, body aches and throat pain. She reported eating meatloaf with her daughter two days before symptom onset, and daughter was reported to be ill as well. Upon initial exam, patient was found to have temp 100F, was hypotensive and tachycardic with lactate of 4.2. FOBT was positive. Significant lab values include creatinine 3.39 (baseline normal), hemoglobin of …

Does Brief Intervention In The Form Of A Lecture Improve Resident Knowledge About Hep C Screening?, Mary Dacosta, Evelyn Chicas, Kiana Clem, Shelby Collymore
North Texas GME Research Forum 2023
The prevalence for hepatitis C during 2013-2016 was about ~2.4 million. Screening helps to prevent chronic hepatitis C or start early curative treatment. USPSTF recently changed their guidelines in 2021 for Hepatitis C screening to now include all asymptomatic patients from ages from 18-79 years old without liver disease. Screening usually includes the Hepatitis C Antibody test. Further testing includes Hepatitis C mRNA PCR if screening test is positive. High risk patients should have periodic screening. Since the change, this project was done to ensure the appropriate screening and testing thereafter was done, as well as appropriate communication and documentation. …

A scoping review of COVID-19's impact on healthcare delivery and health outcomes found disruptions in care delivery and a shift towards telemedicine(1). Another study found no significant change in the length of stay for patients admitted to the hospital for COPD exacerbation during the pandemic period compared to the pre-pandemic period(2).
We conducted a secondary analysis of HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital data to compare the outcomes of patients with COPD before (Jan 2018 – Feb 2020) and during the COVID-19 pandemic (March 2020 – Dec 2021). The data included patients aged over 18 years who were diagnosed with COPD …
Benefits Of Rooming-In On Infants With Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome, Emma Ricioli
Benefits Of Rooming-In On Infants With Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome, Emma Ricioli
Nursing | Senior Theses
Neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) is a significant public health concern, affecting infants born to mothers who use opioids during pregnancy. Those exposed in-utero exhibit numerous signs of withdrawal after delivery including tremors, gastrointestinal distress, inconsolability, and poor feeding. Typical treatment for infants suffering from NOWS included direct admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for close observation and pharmacological interventions. However, NICU stays can interfere with bonding and breastfeeding. They can also lead to increased lengths of stay, higher costs, and more invasive pharmacological treatments. These infants typically do not have any other concerning health issues besides NOWS …
