Modern Potentiostat Architectures For Electrochemical Sensing: Design, Integration, And Future Directions, Reagan Aviha, Gymama Slaughter
Center for Bioelectronics Publications
Potentiostats are essential to electrochemical sensing, enabling precise control of electrode potentials and measurement of current responses. As demand grows for portable, wearable, and point-of-care systems, potentiostat design has evolved from benchtop instruments to compact, low-power, and wirelessly connected platforms. This review provides a comprehensive, system-level perspective on modern potentiostat architectures, covering operational principles, analog front-end design, signal generation and acquisition, communication protocols, and software integration. Unlike prior reviews that treat these aspects independently, this work integrates electrochemical theory with electronic design and data communication frameworks. Key components, including operational amplifiers, transimpedance amplifiers, DAC/ADC subsystems, and microcontroller-based control, are examined …

Center for Bioelectronics Publications
Diabetes continues to impose significant global health and economic burdens, driving the demand for robust, enzyme-free glucose sensors capable of reliable operation under physiological conditions. Here, we report the development of a high-performance nonenzymatic glucose sensor based on laser-induced graphene (LIG) modified with zinc oxide (ZnO) and platinum (Pt) nanostructures. ZnO was electrodeposited onto LIG with modulation potential and deposition duration systematically optimized. The ZnO/LIG electrodes were characterized electrochemically using potassium ferricyanide and evaluated for glucose oxidation in phosphate-buffered solution. Subsequent electrodeposition of Pt under analogous optimized conditions yielded a ternary Pt/ZnO/LIG architecture with enhanced electrocatalytic activity. Sensor performance was …

Pseudohypobicarbonatemia is a laboratory artifact in which severe hypertriglyceridemia interferes with enzymatic bicarbonate measurements, leading to falsely low levels that can mimic metabolic acidosis. We present a case of a patient with diabetes and hyperlipidemia who was initially found to have profound hypobicarbonatemia and an elevated anion gap, raising concerns for metabolic acidosis. However, arterial blood gas analysis revealed a normal acid-base status, prompting further investigation and identification of severe hypertriglyceridemia (>1100 mg/dL) as the underlying cause. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges posed by hypertriglyceridemia-induced lab errors and underscores the importance of confirming suspected metabolic acidosis with arterial …
