Acute Aortic Dissection Masquerading As Testicular Torsion: A Case Report, Bruce M. Lo, Megyn K. Christensen, Coral E. Byrns, Benjamin Chidester
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications
Introduction: Aortic dissection is a rare but life-threatening condition with a high mortality rate if diagnosis is delayed. Aortic dissection classically presents with sudden-onset, sharp pain in the chest or back. However, atypical presentations can also occur, which could lead to a delay in diagnosis.
Case Report: A patient initially presented to the emergency department (ED) with left testicular pain ongoing for several hours. On examination, he had tenderness in the left lower quadrant abdomen and left testicle. A testicular ultrasound revealed decreased blood flow to the left testicle, raising concern for testicular torsion. The patient was taken to the …

EVMS School of Health Professions Faculty Publications
Background:
Efficient turnover time (TOT) and adherence to first-start time (FST) in operating and angiography suites are critical for optimizing workflow, reducing costs, and maximizing patient satisfaction. Hospitals face challenges in maintaining these metrics due to operational constraints and unexpected emergent cases. Our goal was to compare TOT, FST, and total admission time for elective cases performed in angiography suites at an ambulatory neurosurgery center (ANSC) versus a tertiary hospital (TH).
Methods:
We conducted a retrospective analysis of data for patients who underwent elective diagnostic or interventional neuroendovascular procedures at the TH or ANSC from January 2024 through October 2024. …

Early Pressure Injury Identification And Intervention In Emergency Department Older Adults Who Are Admitted Into A Community Hospital Intensive Care Unit, Lisa M. Britt
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
A clinical gap was identified when reviewing a hospital acquired pressure injury (HAPI) dashboard from a 369- bed, acute care community hospital located in North Texas. Fifty percent of HAPIs acquired occurred in older adults, aged 60 or higher, who were admitted into the intensive care unit (ICU) from the emergency department (ED). A retrospective review of the electronic health records (EHR) demonstrated that none of the patients had received HAPI prevention interventions while they were in the ED and the inconsistent document of skin assessments resulted in identification of few HAPIs present on admission (POA). The purpose of this …

Improving Trauma Resuscitation Through Video Review: A Quality Improvement-Oriented Literature Review, Joshua Smith, Leena Iqbal
North Texas GME Research Forum 2026
Background Trauma resuscitation is a high-acuity, time-critical environment characterized by diagnostic uncertainty, simultaneous interventions, and complex team dynamics. Despite the widespread adoption of standardized trauma frameworks such as Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), deviations from best practice and process variability remain common. Trauma video review (TVR) has emerged as a method to objectively evaluate resuscitation performance beyond traditional documentation.
Methods A narrative literature review was conducted of English-language publications examining the use of video recording and structured video review in trauma resuscitation. Peer-reviewed articles and relevant gray literature were identified through database and citation searches. Included works evaluated TVR for …
A New Conceptual Framework For The Approach To The Emergency Department Patient, Christopher Houston
A New Conceptual Framework For The Approach To The Emergency Department Patient, Christopher Houston
North Texas GME Research Forum 2026
Background
The Emergency Department (ED) is an often chaotic environment where you have little information, little time, and must evaluate for multiple serious conditions. This can be overwhelming for trainees and young physicians. Having a thought process specifically tailored to the ED could be helpful organizing priorities and diagnostic pathways. There are several disease specific core measures that are time sensitive in the ED. Specifically; STEMI, stroke, sepsis, and trauma. Each of these conditions must be rapidly identified, and appropriate pathways initiated.
Trainees are traditionally taught to approach a patient with a wide differential diagnosis for each chief complaint and …
