Enhancing Mass Casualty Incident Preparedness: Bridging The Gap Between Education And Practice, Emily M. Coggins Jan 2026

Enhancing Mass Casualty Incident Preparedness: Bridging The Gap Between Education And Practice, Emily M. Coggins

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The increasing amount of mass casualty incidents (MCIs), such as natural disasters, large-scale emergencies, and active shooter events, has emphasized the need for healthcare professionals to respond effectively. Traditional undergraduate nursing curriculum often offers limited opportunities for students to practice disaster preparedness through simulated experiences. This DNP project was created to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing an MCI training simulation to increase the confidence and competence of senior pre-licensure nursing students when responding to a mass casualty event. The project implemented a 1-day, simulation-based MCI event for senior nursing students enrolled in an Adult Health II course. The event included …

Purpose/Background

Globally, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality during the peripartum and postpartum period in delivering people. Emerging evidence suggests that combining second-line uterotonics with tranexamic acid (TXA) improves maternal outcomes, reduces blood loss, and lowers morbidity and mortality related to PPH (Jones et al., 2023; Al-dardery et al., 2023). TXA, an antifibrinolytic, enhances clotting, reduces blood loss, transfusion needs, hemoglobin drop, and the use of additional uterotonics (Bellos & Pergialiotis, 2021). This review highlights the benefits of TXA.

Background

Emergency mental health hospital readmissions present significant challenges to healthcare systems, often resulting in increased costs, prolonged hospital stays, and poor patient outcomes. Continuity of care through predischarge referrals to outpatient mental health services, psychosocial support, and community resources has been proposed as a strategy to reduce readmissions. However, the effectiveness of these interventions remains inconsistent across different populations and settings.

Objective

This scoping review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of predischarge referrals in reducing 30-day emergency mental health hospital readmissions, identify key components of successful programs, and assess the influence of demographic factors on readmission rates.

Ekg Is Key: A Quality Improvement Project To Decrease Door-To-Ekg Time In A Rural Emergency Department, Amanda Southwell

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Electrocardiograms (EKGs) are the priority when evaluating patients with chest pain who present to the Emergency Department (ED). The American Heart Association and other governing bodies suggest a 10-minute door-to-EKG (DTE) time. The target facility displayed a delay in DTE times.

Purpose: The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement (QI) project aimed to decrease the average DTE time for patients over 18 years old with chest pain who presented to the ED registration area.

Methods: The DNP project consisted of an EKG suite to perform EKGs near the ED registration/triage area. Registration and ED staff were educated on …

Blunt Cerebrovascular Injury (Bcvi): Universal Cta Neck Screening At Level 2 Trauma Center, Tamine Gogel

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Blunt Cerebrovascular Injury (BCVI) refers to injuries to the vessels supplying blood to the brain, primarily carotid and vertebral arteries, and can result from trauma, resulting in stroke by vessel dissection, thrombus formation, embolization, and hemorrhage. Timely identification is crucial for effective intervention and improved outcomes. This doctoral project proposes the implementation of universal screening using Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) of the neck during initial workup for blunt force trauma at a Level II ACS-verified trauma center. The primary objective is to mitigate potential delays in diagnosing and treating BCVI, thereby reducing the likelihood of complications. Patients ≥ 15 years …

Sepsis Criteria On Triage (Scot): Sepsis Alert, Kristie Givens Dec 2023

Sepsis Criteria On Triage (Scot): Sepsis Alert, Kristie Givens

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Sepsis is a serious life-threatening condition that kills hundreds of thousands of patients every year and is a major leading cause of death. Sepsis is a medical emergency where early identification and prompt treatment are crucial for survival. Despite assessment tools for early recognition, a delay in antibiotic therapy remains. A sepsis alert (Code Sepsis) in the emergency department could improve sepsis care, spare countless lives, and save billions of dollars nationwide, annually. The implementation of a Code Sepsis will trigger a team to deliver immediate treatment and ensure one hour antibiotic administration times. The John Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice …

Purpose: The purpose of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to improve the patient experience in the Emergency Department (ED) of a metropolitan hospital. The DNP project focused on the benefit of a patient advocate in the ED to improve the patient experience. The project sought to improve …

Foley Catheter Algorithm, Chary Mathew May 2023

Foley Catheter Algorithm, Chary Mathew

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Urinary catheterization, indwelling and intermittent are simple and common procedures performed in hospitals, emergency rooms, nursing homes, and clinics to ensure adequate urinary output in patients who cannot void efficiently or closely monitor fluid intake and output. Though simple and straightforward in most cases, catheterization can become a challenging procedure with complications in the absence of a standardized protocol for difficult catheterization (Ghaffary et al., 2013). This Quality Improvement Project aimed to develop a standardized Foley catheter algorithm/ flow chart available in our institution's intranet and laminated charts in nursing stations and procedure rooms with Foley catheter insertion indications, types, …

Improving Intravenous Catheter Insertion Success In Difficult Access Patients, Heidi Berry Jan 2023

Improving Intravenous Catheter Insertion Success In Difficult Access Patients, Heidi Berry

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Around one in every nine Emergency Department (ED) patients have Difficult Intravenous Access (DIVA) and 25% of ED patients will require more than one attempt (Fields et al., 2014a). Failed insertion attempts contribute to decreased patient satisfaction, care delays, and financial losses. The freestanding ED affiliated with a multi-state, not-for-profit healthcare system in an urban community had difficulty with first-attempt Peripheral IV (PIV) insertion success in identified patients. The target population was the clinical staff of the freestanding ED which included Registered Nurses and Paramedics. The objective outcome was to enhance personal knowledge of PIV catheter insertion in difficult-access patients …

Implementing The Use Of The Emergency Severity Index Triage Tool In Urgent Care, Sakeena Spencer Oct 2022

Implementing The Use Of The Emergency Severity Index Triage Tool In Urgent Care, Sakeena Spencer

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: The urgent care sector has quickly grown in the last decade. Patients who visit healthcare facilities seeking treatment for exacerbations of chronic conditions or episodic illnesses such as asthma without scheduled appointments receive healthcare services from Urgent Care Centers (UCC) or Emergency Departments (E.D.s). Upon visiting the UCC, these patients report life-threatening symptoms; hence require immediate medical attention. UCC healthcare workers should distinguish between non-acute and acute patients to prioritize providing healthcare to patients, ensuring they are not at risk for fatal outcomes. Using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) triage tool while delivering healthcare services to these patients has …

Improving Emergency Department Quality Of Care, Carmen Smith Jan 2021

Improving Emergency Department Quality Of Care, Carmen Smith

Emergency department (ED) crowding can cause an extended length of stay (LOS) and high rates of patients who leave without being seen (LWBS). This quality improvement ED project sought to reduce LOS and LWBS by implementing a triage (PIT) team. The design included an outcomes evaluation with available data and a staff pre and posttest. Length of stay and LWBS rates were compared before and after implementation. Results indicated a reduction in the average LOS and LWBS rates for the 30 days of project implementation compared to the 30 days before the project initiation. The overall goal of the PIT …

Developing An End-Of-Life Discussion Protocol In Primary Care Clinics, James L. Hawley Jan 2021

Developing An End-Of-Life Discussion Protocol In Primary Care Clinics, James L. Hawley

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

End-of-life (EOL) issues are far too often addressed reactively in Emergency Departments when patients can no longer express their wishes. This scenario can result in unwanted futile care, increased healthcare costs, and emotional hardships for family and healthcare workers. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement a protocol that would shift advanced directive conversations proactively back into primary health care settings. This action would allow patients to make and document informed decisions with their Primary Care Providers (PCPs). A pilot study conducted in November 2020 at a rural clinic provided feedback from PCPs on perceived barriers to …
