Well-Being And Leadership Within The Emergency Department, Jacob T. Berg, Thomas Matese, Dennis Anthony Cardriche, David Hotwagner

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

This article looks at well-being and the role of leadership from the perspective of emergency medicine. The importance of leadership within the emergency department (ED), emergency medicine writing at large, and the prevention of burnout and compassion fatigue cannot be overstated. This article looks at the need for more research and measured interventions within the ED. It also highlights some measures that could be taken to help improve well-being from a leadership perspective to improve patient safety and outcomes within the ED.

Pyomyositis is a rare disease that is often misdiagnosed. Formerly more common in tropic areas, it has been more prevalent in temperate climates in the past couple of decades. Most cases of pyomyositis have a known cause or the patient is immunocompromised, but there are a few documented cases of spontaneous pyomyositis in an otherwise healthy patient. Our case describes a 35-year-old male with no past medical history or history of IV drug use who presented to the emergency department with right sided chest pain. Background: Crowding in the emergency department has been a prevalent issue for decades, however, over the last few years, crowding and the number of patient visits in EDs have been higher than normal. Many factors influenced this, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Emergency departments around the country have been at a loss in improving patient flow and time in the ER. Literature has demonstrated some possible methods with varying results, but there has not been significant research on the subject.

INTRODUCTION: The probability of survival is poor in patients who require a resuscitative thoracotomy, reported in the literature to be 9-20%. Outcomes are worse in patients who have suffered blunt trauma compared to penetrating trauma reported between 2-7%. Many studies have been done to evaluate clinical predictors of survival versus mortality. We present a case of high-mechanism blunt trauma with a high injury severity score of 34 who survived after an emergency clamshell thoracotomy with full neurological recovery.
