Background: Effective evaluation of stroke symptoms necessitates a comprehensive clinical assessment, influencing the timely administration of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). This study examines the relationship between patients’ preferred language as well demographic factors and stroke care metrics within the framework of the HCA Healthcare System.

Introduction: Carbamates are a class of insecticides structurally and mechanistically similar to organophosphate (OP) insecticides. Carbamates are N-methyl carbamates derived from a carbamic acid and cause carbamylation of acetylcholinesterase at neuronal synapses and neuromuscular junctions. While they possess a similar mechanism of action to the irreversible phosphorylation of acetylcholinesterase by organophosphates, carbamates bind to acetylcholinesterase reversibly. Subsequently, carbamates typically have a similar toxicological presentation to OP poisonings with a duration of toxicity that is typically less than 24 hours.

Introduction: Hyperkalemia is a commonly presenting electrolyte derangement, usually secondary to chronic kidney disease or medication use. In one retrospective study by Singer et al of 100,260 Emergency Department (ED) patient visits it was found that 1 in 11 ED patients presented with a potassium derangement (1). Patients can present in various ways, from asymptomatic to life threatening arrhythmias. A less commonly recognized cause of hyperkalemia is dietary substitutions for everyday table salt. The Care Alert program is designed to help navigate encounters with patient populations that are high utilizers of emergency department (ED) resources. These populations often have chronic medical conditions, have a poor understanding of their conditions, are unfamiliar with the EDs’ role in the management of these conditions, and commonly lack outpatient resources. The Care Alert program intends to address the needs of this challenging patient population by designing individualized care plans that are approved through a multidisciplinary committee. Background

Racial, ethnic, and gender disparities in effective pain management have been well-documented across healthcare settings. However, discrepancies in the treatment of patients in prehospital pain management settings have not been well researched. The objective of this study was to determine whether Wyoming emergency medical service (EMS) providers’ use of opioids to treat prehospital pain or injury varies by patient race/ethnicity or gender.

The use of physician satisfaction scores to evaluate emergency medicine physicians’ performance and compensation is controversial. Prior studies have shown that the clinical environment may influence scores. This study compared satisfaction scores for the same physician at different emergency departments (ED). Differences in their individual score may indicate the ED environment could be as important as the physician’s interaction.

Sickle cell crisis hospitalizations are emotionally and financially burdensome to patients and healthcare systems, and processes to decrease the frequency or length of stay of these crises should be examined.

Methods

This is a multicenter retrospective hospital record review of sickle cell crisis hospitalizations as defined by ICD-10 codes (D57.1-4), from January 2016 through December 2019, examining inpatient medication administration records and length of stay among admitted adults aged 18–65 years. Patient controlled analgesia orders using morphine, hydromorphone, fentanyl and/or merperidine at any point of an admission (n=188) were compared to admissions without any patient-controlled analgesia orders (n=2,159).
