Improving Healthcare Provider Knowledge In Acute And Primary Transgender Health Needs: The Implementation Of A Clinical Education Program With Urgent Care And Emergency Room Staff And Providers, Tonia Lower

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

The purpose of this project was to improve knowledge and identify personal bias and beliefs in the acute and primary healthcare needs of transgender persons, through the implementation of a clinical education program with healthcare providers and staff working within the urgent care and emergency department settings. The need for such a program exists due to the lack of suitable and accessible healthcare that may lead to misdiagnosis, delay of treatment and poor health outcomes. Including clinical education in the acute and primary healthcare needs of transgender persons that can be integrated into healthcare organizations may aid in the improvement …

Handoff Communication In The Emergency Department, Kristen Matichko Dec 2015

Handoff Communication In The Emergency Department, Kristen Matichko

DNP Forum

The communication of patient information through use of handoff ensures continuity of care and patient safety. A study of hand-off reports between pre-hospital personnel and staff in the emergency department revealed a lack of complete or formal information dialogue. Nurses play a vital role in the process of communication and information exchange through the use of handoff despite minimal guidelines for that exchange in current nursing practice. The pre-hospital hand-off informational exchange impacts patient safety as well as the planning and implementation of nursing care based upon that information.

The sample used was from a convenience sampling of patients arriving …

The Relationships Between Patients’ Perceptions Of Nurse Caring Behaviors, Nurses’ Perceptions Of Nurse Caring Behaviors And Patient Satisfaction In The Emergency Department, Theresa Bucco May 2015

The Relationships Between Patients’ Perceptions Of Nurse Caring Behaviors, Nurses’ Perceptions Of Nurse Caring Behaviors And Patient Satisfaction In The Emergency Department, Theresa Bucco

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: Approximately 100 million people seek care in Emergency Departments yearly, which can be overwhelming for many Emergency Department (ED) nurses. Thus, caring for these patients and meeting their needs is challenging for ED nurses. It is the patients’ perceptions of the first caring encounters in the ED that can have a significant impact on patient satisfaction.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships between patients’ perceptions of nurse caring behaviors, nurses’ perceptions of nurse caring behaviors, and patient satisfaction in the ED.

Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study that examined the …

Outcomes Associated With Blood Component Transfusion In Adult Trauma Patients, Allison R. Jones

Theses and Dissertations--Nursing

The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate outcomes associated with blood component (BC) transfusion in adult trauma patients. Specific aims were to: 1) explore the relationship between traumatic injury, hemorrhage, and BC transfusion, focusing on consequences of the component storage lesion through presentation of a conceptual model; 2) systematically review research literature comparing outcomes of massively transfused major trauma patients based on ratios of BCs received; 3) evaluating the relationship between type of blood transfusion trauma patients received (whole blood versus BCs) and mortality likelihood after controlling for demographic and clinical variables; 4) evaluating the relationship between volume and …

Quantification Of Opportunities For Early-Stage Paramedicine Students To Practice Clinical Skills During Clinical Placements Compared With An Equal Dose Of Simulation-Based Workshops, Brennen W. Mills, Owen B. Carter, Cobie Rudd, Jodie Mills, Nathan Ross, Joanne D. Ruck Jan 2015

Quantification Of Opportunities For Early-Stage Paramedicine Students To Practice Clinical Skills During Clinical Placements Compared With An Equal Dose Of Simulation-Based Workshops, Brennen W. Mills, Owen B. Carter, Cobie Rudd, Jodie Mills, Nathan Ross, Joanne D. Ruck

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Introduction A reported advantage of simulation-based learning environments (SLE) over clinical placements (CPs) is that the former can provide a greater number and breadth of opportunities to practice level-appropriate clinical skills compared with the random patient presentations provided during the latter. Although logical and widely accepted as fact, we find no published evidence to demonstrate the magnitude, nor indeed veracity, of this assumption. We therefore sought to quantify the clinical skills practiced by entry-level paramedicine students attending a well-selected CP compared with an equal dosage of SLE.

Methods N=37 first-year paramedicine students completed activity diaries during 3 days of CP …

Impact Of Improving Throughput In The Emergency Department, Katherine J. Edrington Dec 2014

Impact Of Improving Throughput In The Emergency Department, Katherine J. Edrington

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

The purpose of this project was to evaluate the patient experience in the emergency department (ED) and in the inpatient setting while correlating increased throughput and patient outcomes at a suburban Acute Care facility in Ohio. The culture in the organization has lacked accountability and ownership of the patients. The ED admitted length of stay (ALOS) was 358 minutes in the beginning of 2013. For the first time in the organization’s history, the ED ALOS is now typically less than the recommended benchmark of 300 minutes. A report of findings among ED’s surveyed showed the ALOS best practice is 244 …

La Cesárea Y El Parto Natural: Las Opiniones De Profesionales De La Salud En La Provincia De Buenos Aires / Cesarean Section And Natural Birth: The Opinions Of Health Provinces In The Province Of Buenos Aires, Jacqueline Chipkin

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Introduction: The ways in which women of society give birth have the power to influence maternal-infant health and shape the economy of the healthcare system. Today, the rates of cesarean sections are increasing throughout the world. In Argentina, on average, more than 35% of pregnant women received cesarean sections in 2008, with large differences observed in the rates between the public and private health sectors. The World Health Organization (WHO) has established that healthcare systems should only employ a cesarean section if labor cannot progress safely. According to this standard, the organization estimates that cesarean sections should only be utilized …

When Exercise Is A Pain In The Head, Rebecca D. Granger Oct 2014

When Exercise Is A Pain In The Head, Rebecca D. Granger

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Headache is one of the five most common chief complaints in the US, resulting in nearly 5 million visits to the ED (Lange, 2011). With great variance in quality, etiology, pathophysiology, and as a potential indicator of a serious underlying problem, it is critical that these headaches be accurately diagnosed, primarily for rapid identification of life threatening factors, but also to offer treatment and education specific to the particular type of headache the patient is experiencing. This will result in better outcomes for the patient through better control and will subsequently save health care dollars by reducing ED visits and …

APPROACH TO PROBLEM SOLVING

High priority index questions from HCAHPS and Press Ganey surveys, including overall ratings, communication with RNs and MDs, hospital environment and response to concerns and complaints, were targeted for improvement. These high priority indices served as the basis for redesigning Patient Services using a multi-faceted approach to improve patients’ experiences.

At Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH), high performance on the Patient Experiences of Care Survey has been driven by a successful multi-tiered approach to patient services:

·Hospital leadership guided and implemented new approaches to ensure excellence in patient services is an ever-present and obtainable goal

·Physician …

Sickle Cell Disease: A Quality Improvement Initiative For Emergency Department Providers, Pretrescia Marie Walker May 2013

Sickle Cell Disease: A Quality Improvement Initiative For Emergency Department Providers, Pretrescia Marie Walker

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an incurable, chronic condition that results in a constellation of disorders, frequent emergency department (ED) visits, and repeated hospital admissions. Those affected often suffer from pain crisis, infection, acute chest syndrome, stroke, and multi-organ impairment and frequently do not receive adequate pain management during acute pain episodes because ED providers view them as drug seeking. The majority of patients with SCD are African-American and may be low income, uninsured, or on Medicaid. As a result, these demographics make ED under-treatment of pain in patients with SCD a health equity issue. This was a pre-experimental one …

Patient-Family Centered Advisory Council For The Emergency Department, Kelly Sanocki Jan 2013

Patient-Family Centered Advisory Council For The Emergency Department, Kelly Sanocki

Theses and Graduate Projects

Issues such as overcrowding and long wait times in the ED cause an increase in patient frustration and dissatisfaction, which may lower hospital satisfaction scores,, and reimbursement. This project proposes the implementation of a Patient-Family Advisory Council (PFAC) in the Emergency Department (ED) setting in a large urban hospital. The addition of a PFAC will offer patients and family members a voice in their care, as they work collaboratively with various healthcare providers to improve patient care, patient safety, and overall satisfaction. The addition of Watson's Caring theory will serve as the theoretical framework for the PFAC since it is …

Optimizing Atraumatic Emergency Care In Child Sexual Abuse, Kristen A. Morris Jan 2013

Optimizing Atraumatic Emergency Care In Child Sexual Abuse, Kristen A. Morris

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Child sexual abuse has been identified as a common problem. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, in 2010 it was estimated that child victims of sexual abuse accounted for 9.2% (69,368) of the 573,794 children under the age of 12 years who were the victims of maltreatment. The emergency department (ED) is often the point of entry into the healthcare system for child sexual abuse victims, which adds to the resource burden of this department nationwide. The purpose of this evidence-based project was to develop a best-practice screening tool for medical providers to guide the …

Effect Of Blood Collection Practices On Emergency Department Blood Specimen Rejection Rates, Barbara K. Vernoski Jan 2013

Effect Of Blood Collection Practices On Emergency Department Blood Specimen Rejection Rates, Barbara K. Vernoski

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The practice of obtaining blood as part of the placement of a new peripheral venous access device (p-VAD) is a frequent practice in the emergency department (ED). Of the concerns related to this practice is the possibility of laboratory specimen rejection due to p-VAD catheter size, use of the wrong collection device, and the absence of a standardized collection process. The objective of this study, therefore, was to examine the effect of the use of evidence-based venipuncture and p-VAD blood collection protocols on the rejection rate of blood specimens drawn by staff in the adult areas of an urban academic …

Increasing Labor And Delivery Nurse Knowledge Of Triaging Non-Obstetrical Medical Emergencies In Pregnant Women Through The Use Of Simulation, Julie Hoffman May 2012

Increasing Labor And Delivery Nurse Knowledge Of Triaging Non-Obstetrical Medical Emergencies In Pregnant Women Through The Use Of Simulation, Julie Hoffman

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect simulation training has on an OB nurse's ability to correctly triage pregnant patients. Registered Nurses (RNs) working in OB triage must be able to correctly and expediently identify the care a pregnant patient needs. OB triage nurses are trained to recognize pregnancy related issues that commonly present during the months leading up to delivery. It is as important for these nurses to have the skills to realize when a pregnant patient is having a non-obstetrical health crisis. A group of OB triage RNs participated in simulation-training scenarios based on non- …
