BACKGROUND: The Altmetric score (AS) is a novel measure of publication impact that is calculated by the number of mentions across various social media websites. This method may have advantages over traditional bibliometrics in the context of research by medical students.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether dermatology matriculants who graduated from higher-ranked medical schools published more articles with greater impact (ie, a higher AS) than those from lower-ranked institutions.

METHODS: A PubMed search for articles published by dermatology residents who started medical school in 2020 was conducted. Demographic information and Altmetric data were collected, and medical schools were …

Presentations Of Cutaneous Disease In Various Skin Pigmentations: Cutaneous Abscesses, Christopher M. Wong, Christian J. Scheufele, Sandhya Bodapati, Daniel A. Nguyen, Ashleigh E. Hermann, Jean Elizze M. Charles, Michael Carletti, Stephen E. Weis

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Cutaneous abscesses are collections of pus resulting from skin and soft tissue bacterial infections. They clinically exhibit the four cardinal inflammatory signs of pain, warmth, swelling, and erythema. In patients with darkly pigmented skin, classically-associated erythema may be challenging to appreciate and can lead to missed or delayed diagnosis. We compare abscess presentations in different skin types. Recognition of varying presentations of cutaneous abscesses in diverse skin colors will help clinicians utilize additional clues to identify and diagnose this entity correctly.

When Are Inpatient And Emergency Dermatology Consultations Appropriate?, Hershel Dobkin, Timothy Blackwell, Robin Ashinoff

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Hospitalists and emergency physicians continue to struggle with the assessment of dermatologic conditions, often consulting dermatology whenever a patient has a “rash” or skin concern. Dermatology is still not emphasized in medical education and often is taught to most medical students in an abbreviated fashion, which results in physicians feeling ill-equipped to deal with any dermatologic condition—either mundane or potentially life-threatening.

Better guidelines are needed for physicians in the ED and on inpatient units to guide them on appropriate use of dermatologic consultation outside the ambulatory office and the clinic. We constructed a consultation flowchart to help guide the triage …

A Review Of Identified Barriers To Sunscreen Adherence For Skin Cancer Protection, Kaitlynne Pak, Ericson Torralba, Clayton Connor, Julian J. Trevino

Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US and worldwide. A clear risk factor for all types of skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma) is UV exposure, whether artificial or natural. It is well-understood that regular sunscreen use with an SPF of 30 or greater reduces the risk of skin cancers; and especially that of melanoma, which is responsible for a majority of skin cancer deaths. However, the annual incidence of skin cancer cases, including melanoma, continues to rapidly rise in recent years. This may have a strong association with low rates of daily …

Student Works (2020-2029)

Metabolic syndrome, a cluster of multiple risk factors, is known to increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and certain cancers. Poor health behaviours such as poor dietary intake and physical activities are known risk factors of metabolic syndrome. However, very little is known if the social determinants of health throughout the lifecourse are associated with metabolic syndrome. The study aimed to explore the association between life-course social determinants of health and metabolic syndrome. The cross-sectional study involved female secondary school teachers living in the state of Johor, Malaysia. The study used available data from the Clustering of Lifestyle risk …

The Effects Of Moderate-Severe Plaque Psoriasis On Patient Well-Being And Prevention Of Flares, Glenn Devera

Nursing | Senior Theses

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that is indicated by red, patchy and scaly skin that can be painful when irritated. Patients with psoriasis have an increased risk for a number of chronic diseases. Despite the expansion of treatments for moderate-to-severe psoriasis over the last decade, patients may still find that treatment strategies are not as successful, leaving them dissatisfied with their treatments. A relationship built upon trust between the nurse and the patient diagnosed with psoriasis may serve to help ensure optimal care. A comprehensive literature review was performed and found that best practices for patient management need to …

Total Body Skin Exams: Sensitivity, Specificity, And Number Needed To Screen, Shayan Waseh, Michael Bui, Audra Hugo, Alexander Sherban, Elizabeth Jones, Md

Phase 1

Introduction: Skin cancer, the most common form of cancer worldwide, has one of the highest cure rates among cancers if diagnosed and treated early in its course. The Total Body Skin Exam (TBSE) is the primary modality used to screen for skin cancers. Currently, few studies have characterized the effectiveness of the TBSE in contemporary populations.

Objective: Characterizing the number-needed-to-screen (NNS) to diagnose a case of skin cancer through TBSEs will make it possible to better understand its effectiveness as a screening modality and its utility in an increasingly population health-based healthcare system.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of 3155 …
