Background: Indoor tanning exposes individuals to artificial ultraviolet (UV) radiation through devices such as tanning beds and sunlamps, increasing the risk of skin damage and malignancy. Prior research suggests associations between indoor tanning and melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), with potential variation based on age of initiation and cumulative exposure.
Purpose: The purpose of this literature review was to examine the association between indoor tanning and skin cancer risk, with a focus on age at first exposure, frequency, and duration of tanning bed use across melanoma, BCC, and SCC outcomes.
Methodology: A structured literature review …

Introduction: Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) is a widely prescribed and generally well-tolerated antibiotic. Cutaneous reactions occur in up to 4% of patients, including morbilliform rash, urticaria, DRESS, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and toxic epidermal necrolysis. More rarely, TMP/SMX can trigger leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV), a small-vessel vasculitis characterized by neutrophilic infiltration, fibrinoid necrosis, and leukocytoclasia. LCV typically manifests as palpable purpura on dependent areas. While often skin-limited, systemic involvement may occur. We present a case of TMP/SMX-induced LCV with multi-organ features. Case description: A 53-year-old healthy male presented to urgent care with dysuria. Urine culture grew pan-sensitive E. coli, and he completed a 7-day course …

Keratosis pilaris (KP) is a common benign disorder involving hyperkeratosis of the skin. It is associated with other common dry skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis and ichthyosis vulgaris. Lesions are clinically characterized as symmetrically distributed, monomorphic, folliculocentric, hyperkeratotic papules with a variable degree of perifollicular erythema. The appearance can be likened to spikey bumps that are commonly located on the arms, legs, and buttocks. Awareness of KP is important as every primary care clinician will see patients with this disorder. Identification can support the diagnosis of other associated skin diseases. Education about KP and its treatment may alleviate psychological …

Independent practice dermatology once promised near-total clinical autonomy and robust profit margins, yet more and more dermatologists have been leaving their “private” practices and contemplating a mid- or late-career move to academia [1]. Openings are available! Over the last 25 years, many academic health centers have evolved to engage clinician educators in support of their educational mission, which requires more clinical rotations for larger student bodies and to provide income to offset losses in research support [23, 39]. Leaving private practice is neither anecdotal nor sentimental; it reflects quantifiable changes in reimbursement, overhead, and the …

The lack of diversity in medical education contributes to disparities in dermatologic health outcomes, particularly for patients of color. This study evaluates second-year medical students’ comfort in diagnosing conditions in skin of color (SOC) and explores strategies to improve their confidence. We hypothesize that a curriculum enriched with SOC representation will enhance diagnostic skills. Surveys from Fall 2020 and Fall 2022 showed increased student comfort in diagnosing SOC. Fall 2022 students, exposed to more diverse dermatologic photos, demonstrated greater confidence. These findings underscore the necessity of integrating SOC content into medical curricula to address healthcare disparities.

Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory skin condition of the pilosebaceous unit in adolescents and young adults and is primarily characterized by the presence of open and closed comedones. In patients of various skin pigmentations, skin-colored comedones may be difficult to appreciate and lead to incorrect or delayed diagnosis of acne. To aid in the identification of acne vulgaris in patients of various skin pigmentations, we present comedonal acne in different skin types and commonly encountered differential diagnoses. With its significant volume and burden of disease, acne vulgaris should be correctly identified in various skin pigmentations by primary care clinicians …

Differentiation between benign angiofibromas of soft tissue and malignant sarcomas.
The accurate diagnosis of this tumor is essential to prevent additional unnecessary treatments and/or surgeries. This can be achieved by proper genetic testing for the presence of markers including the NCOA2 fusion gene, CD34, α-SMA, and epithelial membrane antigen. Genetic testing is an essential component of accurate diagnosis as the appearance of these lesions can mimic other, more harmful neoplasms. Immunohistochemical analysis frequently shows the AHRR-NCOA2 driver mutation which is thought to be associated with t(5;8)(p15;q13), also commonly found in AFSTs. In combination, these immunohistochemical findings allow for accurate diagnosis …

Confidence Of Clark County Medical Students In Identifying Dermatologic Conditions On Different Fitzpatrick Skin Types, Ramaditya Srinivasmurthy
Annual Research Symposium
Racial health disparities are apparent in the field of dermatology across the United States. Certain dermatologic conditions are more likely to go undiagnosed in people with skin of color (SOC), leading to increased morbidity/mortality. Underrepresentation of darker skin tones in medical education may be a contributing factor. This study explores the ability and confidence of TUNCOM students to recognize dermatological conditions on various skin tones.
A 23 question survey was given to 173 second year students to examine their ability and confidence in identifying dermatologic conditions on non-SOC (Fitzpatrick I-III) and SOC (Fitzpatrick IV-VI). Images of common skin disorders on …

Background: Inequities in dermatologic health outcomes translate to worsened clinical outcomes for minority groups. For example, despite a lower incidence of skin cancer overall, African Americans are diagnosed at later stages with greater degrees of lymph node involvement. This has been shown to lead to disproportionate mortality when compared to lighter skinned individuals. Medical education materials contain a significantly lower percentage of skin of color (SOC) images than of lighter skin and research has indicated lower diagnostic accuracy of dermatologic conditions in darker skin by U.S. medical students. The objective of this study was to explore U.S. resident dermatologists’ ability …

The Effects Of An Interprofessional Education Video On Dermatologists’ Understanding Of The Role Of The Dermatology Certified Nurse Practitioner, Danielle Elaine Spelich
Doctoral Projects
Dermatology-certified nurse practitioners (DCNPs) have validated knowledge of a dermatology core curriculum and have at least 3,000 hours of formal or informal dermatology training (Dermatology Nurse Practitioner Certification Board [DNPCB], n.d.a). With their standardized education and training, DCNPs are meeting the benchmarks set out by dermatologists. Subsequently, DCNPs have become the new gold standard for dermatology advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs).
However, there is no mention of DCNPs by the American Academy of Dermatology (American Academy of Dermatology [AAD], 2022), and personal experience with dermatologists is that they lack knowledge about DCNPs. This lack of knowledge could create an impasse …
