Investigating The Effectiveness Of Prehospital Recognition And Administration Of Intravenous Antibiotics In Septic Patients, Laura Keane, Ian Peterson
Investigating The Effectiveness Of Prehospital Recognition And Administration Of Intravenous Antibiotics In Septic Patients, Laura Keane, Ian Peterson
Physician Assistant Capstones, 2020-current
Objective: To compare the 30-day mortality rate of suspected sepsis patients who received prehospital (Emergency Medical Services- EMS) antibiotic administration in an ambulance as compared to antibiotic administration in the hospital. Design: Systematic literature review. Methods: Research was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar with the search terms: sepsis, antibiotics, prehospital, EMS, ambulance. The 3 articles selected were chosen after removing articles not from a randomized control trial, no antibiotic administration, and not a free article. Results: From our meta-analysis of the three studies, we concluded that providing antibiotics before arriving at the hospital for patients with suspected septic infections. …
Sunsetting Excessive Chest X-Rays In An Intensive Care Unit: A Quality Improvement Project, Cassandra Sweet
Sunsetting Excessive Chest X-Rays In An Intensive Care Unit: A Quality Improvement Project, Cassandra Sweet
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current
In the cardiovascular service line at an academic medical center in the southeastern United States, obtaining daily chest x-rays still occurred despite evidence that it is unnecessary and possibly even harmful. This quality improvement project was implemented in a 24-bed Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and 20-bed acute care unit, together considered to be the cardiac service line. Using the implementation framework of the Model for Improvement and Plan/Do/Study/Act, a guideline that outlines appropriate times to obtain a chest x-ray based on the American College of Radiology’s appropriateness criteria was created. Daily chest x-rays were eliminated and replaced with an on-demand …
Pulling Heart Strings: Quality Improvement Algorithm For Temporary Epicardial Pacing Wire Removal Post Cardiac Surgery, Jessica Norman
Pulling Heart Strings: Quality Improvement Algorithm For Temporary Epicardial Pacing Wire Removal Post Cardiac Surgery, Jessica Norman
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current
The placement of temporary epicardial pacing wires (TEPW) is considered standard practice post cardiac surgery and is dependent on the patient’s cardiac function intra-operatively and their electrophysiologic profile after weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass (Reade, 2007; Elmistekawy et al, 2016). Complications associated with TEPW removal include myocardial damage, infection, perforation, tamponade, disruption of anastomoses, ventricular arrythmias, and death (Bojar, 2009; Carroll et al, 1998;Timothy & Rodeman, 2004). Currently there is no standard practice on the removal of TEPW and there is wide variation in removal practices involving patients who are routinely on medications such as dual antiplatelet therapies and systemic anticoagulation. …
The Use Of Probiotics To Prevent Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia In Adults, Michael Roper, Paige Douthett
The Use Of Probiotics To Prevent Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia In Adults, Michael Roper, Paige Douthett
Physician Assistant Capstones, 2016 to 2019
Objective: To assess the efficacy and safety of preventing the acquisition of ventilator- associated pneumonia with the use of probiotic supplementation, as compared to a placebo, among hospitalized adult men and women receiving more than 24 hours of mechanical ventilation. Design: Systematic Literature Review. Methods: Systematic searches were conducted through PubMed and Scopus using the search terms “ventilator”, “probiotics”, and “prevention”. Records were excluded from the analysis if they were published before 2015, full text was not available, studies other than randomized control trial or cohort studies, and if the study population was less than 18 years old. Results: Of …
Vitamin C In The Treatment Of Septic Shock, Alyson O. Shaughnessy, Matthew Tieszen
Vitamin C In The Treatment Of Septic Shock, Alyson O. Shaughnessy, Matthew Tieszen
Physician Assistant Capstones, 2016 to 2019
Objective:To assess the efficacy of improving outcomes of septic shock treatment with the addition of Vitamin C to standard treatment compared to standard therapy alone. To assess whether or not Vitamin C has a favorable outcome in the treatment of septic shock in terms of decreasing duration of vasopressor usage, reducing duration of intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and improving mortality.
Design: Systematic literature review.
Methods: Searches were conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar using the terms ascorbic acid, sepsis, septic shock, and vasopressors. In PubMed the following filters were used: humans only, clinical trials, studies within the past …
