Identifying Unnecessary And Excessive Use Of Intravenous Heparin For The Treatment Of Intermediate-Risk Pulmonary Embolism, Youssef Elfatatry, Ryan Gardner, Chukwuemezie Kamanu, Ruben Rhoades

Health Equity and Quality Improvement (HEQI) Summit

Problem Statement

- Intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism (PE) is a diagnosis with heterogenous presentations and mortality rates ranging from 2% to 15%.

- European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines recommend low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH) as first line therapy in most patients. Despite this, the use of IV heparin in intermediate-risk PE remains widespread, due to uncertainty regarding patients receiving further procedures and mitigation of bleeding risk.

Project AIM:

- We aim to (1) identify prescribing patterns and outcomes of anticoagulant therapy on admission, and (2) propose and implement a "PE Care Pathway" in EPIC to address uncertainty in risk-stratifying and treating …

Valproate and levetiracetam are commonly used to manage epilepsy. While valproate is well-documented to significantly affect lipid metabolism, less is known about the effects of levetiracetam. Given this, worse outcomes in MASLD/MASH are anticipated in patients treated with valproate.

The aim of our study is to compare hepatic and cardiovascular outcomes in MASLD/MASH patients treated with valproate versus levetiracetam.

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

One of the most common causes of obstructive shock is massive pulmonary embolism. I these patients with compounded morbidities and limited filling of the heart we sought to sample databases to analyze the inpatient outcomes of the population.

Lifestyle Effects On An Unusual Presentation Of Syncope: A Case Report, Rishma Gattu, Nisarg Shah, Ramya Ravulapalli, Vania Rodriguez, Gary Merlino Nov 2024

Lifestyle Effects On An Unusual Presentation Of Syncope: A Case Report, Rishma Gattu, Nisarg Shah, Ramya Ravulapalli, Vania Rodriguez, Gary Merlino

HCA-NSU MD Research Day

Introduction: This case study explores a unique presentation of syncope with a multifactorial etiology and discusses the impact of lifestyle behaviors on syncope exacerbation. Scant literature exists on behavioral modifications affecting cardiogenic responses. Case Presentation: We present a 53 year old Hispanic male with a past history of palpitations and chronic marijuana use coming to the emergency department (ED) with three episodes of sudden loss of consciousness that occurred after starting his job as a night shift worker, which led to severe chronic sleep deprivation. These episodes lacked prodromal (chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, diaphoresis) and postictal (drowsiness, nausea, …

Effects Of Exercise On The Cardiovascular Health Of Adolescents And Young Adults With Down Syndrome, Samarth Gupta May 2024

Effects Of Exercise On The Cardiovascular Health Of Adolescents And Young Adults With Down Syndrome, Samarth Gupta

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Introduction: It is known that the incidence of Down Syndrome has increased over time and that this condition is associated with congenital heart defects, lower cardiorespiratory capacity, and increased rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes. It has been shown that individuals who have congenital heart defects but not Down Syndrome have increased cardiorespiratory function after engaging in exercise. Unfortunately, the role of exercise in improving cardiovascular health outcomes among individuals with DS is not yet fully understood.

Results: Exercise has been found to improve several health outcomes among individuals with Down Syndrome. For example, moderate to vigorous treadmill exercises …

Purpose: Restoring Effective Sleep Time in Post Cardiac Surgery Patients: A Quality Improvement Project

Brooke Watts, BSN, RN, DNP Student, Murray State University

Dr. Kristin Reid, DNP, APRN, ACNS-BC, DNP Program Director/Assistant Professor Murray State University

Aims: This quality improvement project was developed using DNP project guidelines provided through Murray State University and was designed to improve sleep in hospitalized cardiac surgery patients.

Processes: IRB approval was obtained from the healthcare institution and academic institution. This two-phase quality improvement project was designed to analyze the effects of a change in normalized hospital routines on self-reported sleep in post-cardiac surgery patients. …

Background & Hypothesis: Research has revealed a high prevalence of depression, anxiety, and burnout among medical students accompanied by widespread lack of treatment. We hypothesize that by leveraging our study findings examining the use of telemental health(TMH) among youth (ages 14-24) alongside results from existing research focused on the mental health needs of medical students (median age at start 22-24 years old), we will gain valuable insight into the potential for TMH to address the needs of this high-risk population.

Methods: Using the Delphi method, a sample of 25 experts were surveyed anonymously, thus avoiding group pressure for conformity while …
