It is estimated that 65% of the population are visual learners. With that in mind, a team of cardiac nurses in a large academic tertiary hospital developed a quality improvement project to hopefully improve patient engagement as well the patients’ perception that the nurses explained things in a manner that they could understand.

Baseline patient survey scores for the question, “Nurses Explained Things In A Way That I Understand”, were under the 75^thpercentile for a period of 9 months. A root cause analysis was conducted and it demonstrated numerous reasons for this score.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a clinical syndrome in which a patient has signs and symptoms of heart failure including dyspnea, fatigue, pulmonary rales, peripheral edema and an ejection fraction greater than 50%.1-4 Approximately half of patients with heart failure have a preserved ejection fraction.2-5 HFpEF is considered a distinct clinical entity from other causes of heart failure with a preserved ejection fraction such as valvular heart disease, pericardial disease, and infiltrative cardiomyopathy. HFpEF carries a poor prognosis, with an annual mortality of 29% in patients discharged after an acute decompensated heart failure admission.5 5-year survival …

A national focus for healthcare reform is preventing hospital readmissions. Thirty-day unplanned hospital readmissions impact patient outcomes and are costly to the healthcare system. This project explored the impact between the discharge navigator and 30-day unplanned readmissions for heart failure and sepsis populations in a 238-bed community hospital located in central Virginia. The primary aim of this discharge navigator project was to reduce 30-day readmissions for the heart failure and sepsis populations to meet the goals of the top quartile for like hospitals and the evaluation of cost avoidance for these readmissions. Several studies have shown utility of incorporating simulation training into a variety of healthcare related topics. We hypothesize that incorporating ECG and arrhythmia simulation training in adjunction to ECG and arrhythmia didactics; it would improve Year-3 medical students’ preparedness for managing arrhythmias in the clinical setting.

Early career academic cardiologists, whom many believe are an important component of the future of cardiovascular care, face a myriad of challenges. The Early Career Section Academic Working Group of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) along with senior leadership support, assessed the progress of this cohort from 2013–2016 with a global perspective. Data consisted of accessing National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) public information, American Heart Association and international organizations providing data, and a membership-wide survey. Delirium, an acute and fluctuating disturbance of consciousness and cognition, is a common manifestation of acute brain dysfunction in critically ill patients. Patients with delirium have longer hospital stays and a lower 6-month survival rate than do patients without delirium. Preliminary research suggests that delirium may be associated with cognitive impairment that persists months to years after discharge.

In a large acute care hospital, the cardiac intensive care staff became interested in mitigating their unit’s high delirium rate of ventilated patients. At baseline, many members of the healthcare team did not believe that delirium could be prevented and the predominant …

At baseline, a nuclear medicine department found it difficult to complete cardiac stress tests within scheduled times. Using the performance improvement process, a nuclear medicine department looked to improve patient experience related to wait times for this test.

Two goals were identified and a root cause analysis was initiated. After identifying some process issues, two KPIs were developed to address them.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common human birth defect, and clinicians need to understand the anatomy to effectively care for patients with CHD. However, standard two-dimensional (2D) display methods do not adequately carry the critical spatial information to reflect CHD anatomy. Three-dimensional (3D) models may be useful in improving the understanding of CHD, without requiring a mastery of cardiac imaging. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of 3D models on how pediatric residents understand and learn about tetralogy of Fallot following a teaching session.

CLI (Rutherford class IV-VI) is a terminal stage of peripheral artery disease (PAD); it is defined by the presence of resting pain and/or tissue loss for at least two weeks that may require urgent revascularization to promote healing and prevent limb loss.For patients with infrarenal aortoiliac occlusive disease, the revascularization options are surgery like aortofemoral bypass and axillofemoral bypass or percutaneous intervention. Aortoiliac and aortofemoral bypass procedures are associated with 74% to 95% 5-year patency rates, respectively, which are comparable but not superior to percutaneous therapies.These operations may imply a significant morbidity and mortality on CLI patients who usually have …

Background: To achieve the 90-minute reperfusion goal in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) care, providers must diagnose STEMIs from electrocardiograms (ECGs) obtained upon emergency room arrival and appropriately activate the catheterization lab. To enhance early STEMI care, we sought to improve medical student STEMI recognition and diagnostic accuracy with a teaching module we designed and developed.
