Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia

Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

Mental health is an often-overlooked aspect of overall health and wellness (well-being). Mental illness is increasingly common with 1 in 5 American adults experiencing it annually, and 1 in 20 suffering from a serious mental illness each year [1]. Treatment rates for mental illness are lower in men (37.4%) compared to women (51.2%) [1]. Globally, treatment rates are similar with an estimated cost to the global economy of $1 trillion annually, yet less than 2% of government health expenditure is for mental health worldwide [2]. Obscurin is a large scaffolding protein in striated muscle that maintains sarcolemmal integrity and aligns the sarcoplasmic reticulum with the underlying contractile machinery. Ankyrins are a family of adaptor proteins with some isoforms that interact with obscurin. Previous studies have examined obscurin interacting with individual ankyrins. In this study, we demonstrate that two different ankyrins interact with obscurin's carboxyl terminus via independent ankyrin-binding domains (ABDs). Using in-vitro binding assays, co-precipitation assays, and FLIM-FRET analysis, we show that obscurin interacts with small ankyrin 1.5 (sAnk1.5) and the muscle-specific ankyrin-G isoform (AnkG107). Heart-Healthy Integrative Nutritional Counseling Group Education Sessions Among Chinese Americans With Cardiovascular Risk Factors Or Disease: A Primary Care Quality Improvement Pilot, Jasmin Woo, Evelyn Y. Ho, Jane Jih

Purpose: Current biomedical cardiovascular disease nutrition counseling does not incorporate Chinese medicine principles.

Methods: A heart-healthy integrative nutritional counseling (H2INC) curriculum consistent with Chinese medicine principles and biomedical nutrition guidelines was taught to Chinese Americans in group education sessions. Chinese-speaking patients with cardiovascular disease or risk factors from an urban general medicine practice were recruited to attend a 90-minute group session. Participants completed pre-post surveys to assess the impact of H2INC on their perceived heart-healthy nutrition knowledge and empowerment, as well as the cultural relevance of H2INC.

The progress made over the past years in the field of cancer therapy has led to a significant decrease in cancer mortality, but these therapies have many adverse effects, cardiovascular effects being among the most frequent ones. For increasing lifelong expectancy of surviving cancer patients, cardiac monitoring represents an important task. Current studies and practice recommend echocardiography using strain analysis for monitoring the cardio toxic effects of cancer therapy. The potential of combining imaging techniques with biomarkers for the early detection and diagnosis seems a promising path for future research.

Background: More than one-half of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients have low HDL cholesterol despite having well-managed LDL cholesterol. Almond supplementation has not been shown to elevate circulating HDL cholesterol concentrations in clinical trials, perhaps because the baseline HDL cholesterol of trial subjects was not low.

Objective: This clinical trial was designed to test the effect of almond supplementation on low HDL cholesterol in CAD patients.

Methanol is a toxic substance with extremely devastating effects upon exposure. The case described suffered from such kind of poisoning. MRI brain demonstrated necrosis bilaterally in the Putamen areas which is a classic hallmark finding. Additional Diffusion weighted imaging showed abnormal signal bilaterally in the putamen areas along with Diffusion positive bilateral lesions (possibly infarctions) in both the frontal and occipital lobes that were not evident on MRI with or without contrast.

The case of a 38 years old man with generalized pains fatigue, anorexia, constipation, polyuria serum calcium level of 20.6mg/dl in paired renal function parathyroid hormone is presented. Sestamibi scan showed a functioning left inferior parathyroid tumor, which was successfully removed. Before surgery he was managed with rehydration, diuretics and pamidronate infusion. Five months post surgery the serum calcium levels are normal and renal function has improved.
