Facilitators And Barriers To Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Partnership Sustainability In The United States, Tristen L. Hall, Charlene Barrientos-Ortiz, Griselda Peña-Jackson, Courtney Fultineer, Kevin Werner, Justine Sunshine
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Purpose: Engaging patients in research can enhance relevance and accelerate implementation of findings. Despite investment in patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR), short-term funding cannot maintain such efforts beyond the program timeframe. Sustained interaction between researchers, practitioners, patients, and other stakeholders is needed to sustain use of evidence-based practices and achieve maximum benefit. While previous literature describes components of public health program sustainability, such factors do not necessarily apply to the partnerships that implement those programs, and facilitators are likely to differ across disciplines. We sought to determine facilitators and barriers to PCOR partnership sustainability from participant experiences with sustainable and unsustainable …

Exploring The Relationship Between Dietary Self-Monitoring With A Mobile App And Weight Change, Jason Payne
Exploring The Relationship Between Dietary Self-Monitoring With A Mobile App And Weight Change, Jason Payne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Approximately 70% of the adult population in the United States has overweight or obesity and increased risk for developing chronic diseases. Dietary self-monitoring adherence using a paper diary is associated with weight loss; however, few studies have examined this association with dietary self-monitoring apps. Objectives: 1) explore if an association exists between app-based dietary self-monitoring and weight change among adults with overweight or obesity and 2) explore the relationships between the frequency, consistency, and completeness of self-monitoring and weight change. Methods: Participants self-monitored dietary intake for 8 weeks using the app Calorie Counter by FatSecret. Participants were assigned …
Evaluation Of The Integration Of Behavioral Health Services Into Primary Care, David B. Vander Ark
Evaluation Of The Integration Of Behavioral Health Services Into Primary Care, David B. Vander Ark
Doctoral Projects
Background: Primary care providers are increasingly challenged with managing individuals with behavioral health needs. Evidence suggests that integrating behavioral health services into primary care can improve individual health outcomes and can improve access to behavioral health services.
Objectives: The purpose of this project is to evaluate key outcomes following the evidencebased integration of behavioral health services into a primary care practice.
Methods: Using the Collaborative Practice Model as the implementation model, the behavioral health leadership team added a licensed social worker to a primary care practice on a pilot basis. The social worker offers short-term solution-focused therapy, focusing on depression …
Pilot Study Of Behavioral Activation As Adjunct Treatment For Depression In Primary Care, Lindsay Ellen Toler
Pilot Study Of Behavioral Activation As Adjunct Treatment For Depression In Primary Care, Lindsay Ellen Toler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Many individuals receiving care at a predominantly free primary health care clinic in the northern part of West Virginia are experiencing depression, and medication therapy is the most common form of management with limited resources for psychosocial treatment. Brief psychosocial therapy interventions provided by the primary care provider should be explored as an adjunct treatment for this population in the primary care setting.
A pilot study was conducted to explore the integration of behavioral activation, a brief psychosocial intervention focused on decreasing depressed behavior by increasing nondepressed behavior to reinforce corresponding improvements in mood. Eligible patients were invited to attend …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences
Nicotine has gained the attention of the medical community due to its insidious addictive mechanisms which lead to chronic consumption. The multitude of compounds derived from tobacco smoke have local and systemic negative impacts, resulting in a large number of smoking-related pathologies. The present review offers insights into nicotine addiction physiopathology, as well as social and medical implications, with emphasis on its correlation with Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). Therapeutic strategies and new approaches to nicotine assessment and cessation treatment are discussed, noting that such strategies could take into account the possibility of slow and gradual nicotine release from a …

Patient Barriers For Weight Management Among African American Women, Owen Bowie, Jennifer Kusch, George L. Morris Iii, Tracy Flood, Jessica Gill, Renee E. Walker, Ron A. Cisler, Jennifer T. Fink
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Purpose: The primary aim of this study was to assess the perceptions of local African American women who are overweight or obese using semi-structured focus groups to identify barriers to weight management and factors that support strategy success. The secondary aim of this study was to determine recommendations for patient-centered weight management interventions established specifically for African American women in the Milwaukee-area community.
Methods: Three semi-structured focus groups to explore barriers to weight management were performed among women patients. Participants (N = 41) were recruited via email, postal mail, and phone as available from an academic medical center in Milwaukee, …
Substance-Induced Anxiety Disorder After One Dose Of 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine: A Case Report., Kaeley Kaplan, Fiona Kurtz, Kelly Serafini
Substance-Induced Anxiety Disorder After One Dose Of 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine: A Case Report., Kaeley Kaplan, Fiona Kurtz, Kelly Serafini
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
BACKGROUND: In this report, we describe a case of a patient with substance-induced anxiety disorder occurring after a single dose of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine. Furthermore, we describe the use and efficacy of the Primary Care Behavioral Health model, a collaborative approach to integrative primary mental health care, in evaluating and treating this rare mental health disorder.
CASE PRESENTATION: Three days following ingestion of one dose of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, a 35-year-old Hispanic man with no significant prior mental health history and no history of prior 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine use presented to our hospital with severe, acute anxiety and panic symptoms. He was initially treated with a …
