In anesthesia, high patient anxiety and limited counseling time increase the need for clear, usable information. Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots (e.g., ChatGPT) are increasingly used for patient anesthesia education. Many AI-generated responses exceed the recommended 6th-8th grade reading level for patient education information. Responses also often lack actionable guidance for patients. This study quantifies how optimizing patient-facing prompts improves readability, understandability, and actionability.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common, life-threatening complication in patients with sepsis and septic shock.→ Approximately one-half of patients with sepsis experience an AKI.4 → One-third of all acute kidney injuries are related to sepsis.4 → Sepsis-associated AKI raises in-hospital mortality eightfold and the risk of chronic kidney disease development threefold.1,2,3. Early identification of AKI could save time and resources, lower costs, improve patient outcomes. Therefore, a biomarker for earlier AKI detection in patients with sepsis would serve an outstanding role in health care.In the setting of bacterial infection, an upregulation of innate immune system gene transcription and translation …

Surgery most often provides children with their first exposure to opioids which may lead to misuse and overuse. Protocolizing pain management perioperatively can reduce opioid exposure in children while still providing adequate pain management.

Lower back pain is highly prevalent and a significant cause of disability.
50-84% of adults experiencing back pain at some point.
Previously, patients with chronic lumbar radiculopathy received a maximum of 6 injections a year (q8w).
On Dec 2021, Medicare Coverage of ESIs was updated to limit ESIs to a max of 4 a year (q12w).

Postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) utilized as part of a breast cancer treatment regimen reduces the risk of disease recurrence in appropriately selected patients.1,2,3,4,5 However, PMRT increases risk of radiationrelated toxicities that can interfere with breast reconstruction post-mastectomy.6 Following mastectomy, implant-based reconstruction can increase patient satisfaction and quality of life7,8; complications induced by PMRT such as infection and tissue contracture, though, increase risk for implant loss and may ultimately require further surgeries for the patient.
PMRT is delivered based on treatment plans that are optimized to provide appropriate radiation dosages to tissues along the chest wall while simultaneously limiting exposure of …

Whole genome methylation profiling is proving to be an incredibly powerful tool to diagnose tumors that are otherwise difficult to classify by histopathology and sequencing. The reference library of tumor DNA methylation data, using a machine learning-based tumor classifier, was developed by the German Cancer Research Network (DKFZ), and is available publicly on a research basis. However, medical institutions desiring to implement that classifier for routine clinical care need to import, adapt, and validate the classifier internally. We did this for our own DNA methylation-based classifier of central nervous system (CNS) tumors, using the same training and validation datasets as …

INTRODUCTION
Research suggests that narcotic pain medications are dramatically overprescribed. We hypothesize that narcotics are unnecessary in the majority of infants for postoperative pain control. In this series, we report our experience combining caudal blocks with a non-narcotic postoperative pathway as a means of completely eliminating postoperative narcotics following infant robotic pyeloplasty.

INTRODUCTION
Aortic stenosis is a progressive narrowing of the aortic valve that can cause serious cardiovascular harm such as syncope, heart failure, and death if left untreated. Transfemoral-transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TF-TAVR) emerged in the last 10 years as an alternative for previously inoperable, high-risk patients. Studies suggest that monitored anesthesia for TF-TAVR using minimalist conscious sedation results in better outcomes (e.g., shorter length of stay, lower 30-day mortality) when compared to general anesthesia. However, there is a gap in knowledge of why conscious sedation is more successful. Recent studies have demonstrated the association of intraoperative mean arterial pressure (MAP) …

Background: The recent opioid epidemic in the United States has damaged the country’s public health system and led to devastating patient outcomes. Healthcare providers are responsible to do their part in reducing these negative consequences. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to develop and implement an evidence-based protocol for an intraoperative lidocaine infusion during gastric surgery. The project consisted of five parts: (1) development of an evidenced-based Intraoperative Lidocaine Infusion Protocol, (2) education of the anesthesia team, (3) collection of baseline data, (4) implementation of the Intraoperative Lidocaine Infusion Protocol and (5) evaluation of the results. Method: Baseline …

Examining Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (Eras) Protocol Compliance, Joseph Vecore, Jonathon Baich, Linda Mcdonald
Conference Presentation Abstracts
Background: The development of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have allowed for improved patient outcomes by utilizing a multimodal approach. The use of ERAS for surgical procedures reduces perioperative complications that could lead to increased morbidity, mortality, and length of stay. Additionally, by utilizing a multimodal approach, ERAS protocols help limit opioid use during the perioperative period. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to examine the rate of compliance to the ERAS protocol during colorectal surgery at Beaumont Hospital- Royal Oak. The different levels of compliance were evaluated for their effects on the following patient outcomes: opioid …

Introduction: Intraoperative death affects a team of individuals, each with different levels of training and experience. Although briefings, time-outs, and debriefings have been well described, it is unclear how often they occur following intraoperative catastrophic events. We utilized an electronic survey to assess the frequency and potential utility of a formal debriefing process following the intraoperative death of a patient, and discuss our findings in light of the mental well-being of perioperative medical personnel. Methods:A 19 question electronic survey was distributed to primary operating room staff in two hospital systems. The survey was designed to identify which OR staff members …
