In land plants, the pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) proteins form a large family involved in post-transcriptional processing of RNA in mitochondria and chloroplasts, which is critical for plant development and evolutionary adaption. Although studies showed a number of PPR proteins generally influence the editing of organellar genes, few of them were characterized in detail in rice. Here, we report a PLS-E subclass PPR protein in rice, PPR756, loss of function of which led to the abolishment of RNA editing events among three mitochondrial genes including

Recent advances in next generation sequencing (NGS) and molecular subtyping of tumors have opened the door to clinically available targeted therapies. Although the treatment of many solid tumors still rely on a steady regimen of non-targeted chemotherapeutic agents, it is becoming increasingly more apparent that certain tumors with defects in DNA damage repair (DDR) genes may be exquisitely sensitive to DNA damaging agents or therapies targeting key elements of this pathway such PARP1, ATR, or ATM. Still, for tumors with DDR defects the challenges are multi-fold including: (I) identifying these tumors in patients in time for a window of opportunity …

Introduction
• Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the US.
• PDA is resistant to conventional chemotherapy; however, mechanisms that contribute to this chemoresistance are not well-described.
• The tumor microenvironment in PDA has a dense stromal reaction, which is thought to result in low oxygen and low nutrient conditions (Feig, C., et al. 2012).
• Isocitrate Dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) has been identified as an enzyme that plays an important role in chemoresistance in PDA (Zarei, M., et al. In progress).
• We sought to establish an IDH1 knockout cell line to further …

Background: This study aimed to investigate teenager, young adult, and adult knowledge levels on distracted and impaired driving through the use of educational driving simulators. The distracted and impaired driving simulators were customized to instruct participants on the dangers of driving distracted or impaired utilizing consequence videos. The simulators were taken to high schools, colleges/universities, and businesses over a four year period where we hypothesized that they would play a significant role in raising knowledge about the dangers and penalties of these risky driving behaviors and would also help to increase seat belt usage.
Setting: High schools, colleges / universities, …

Background:
Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) has historically been used conservatively in the management of patients after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD).
In this study, we evaluate the indications for and outcomes associated with TPN use in a high-volume pancreatic surgery center.

Background: There is currently no gold standard for delivery of systems-based practice in medical education, and it is challenging to incorporate into medical education. Health systems competence requires physicians to understand patient care within the broader health care system and is vital to improving the quality of care clinicians provide. We describe a health systems curriculum that utilizes problem-based learning across 4 years of systems-based practice medical education at a single institution.
Methods: This case study describes the application of a problem-based learning approach to system-based practice medical education. A series of behavioral statements, called entrustable professional activities, was created …

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2016-2019)
Objective:
Determine whether a more comprehensive medical student urinary catherer training curriculum can be successful in decreasing post-operative CAUTI rates in general and vascular surgery patient populations.
Primary target:
Reduce post-operative UTI rates by 0.5% over 6 months
Secondary targets:
Achieve 100% medical student confidence in Foley catheter placement, understanding indications and contraindications to urinary catheterization.
Improve objective performance of urinary catheterization skills as determined by objective clinical skills exam (OSCE) scores.
