BACKGROUND: Despite maximal ventilatory support, many patients die from hypoxia in the setting of potentially reversible pulmonary failure. There remains a pressing need for additional pulmonary supportive care measures, especially techniques that do not require systemic anticoagulation. The objective of our experiments was to determine whether systemic oxygenation could be increased in a large animal, with induced hypoxia, by perfusing the abdominal cavity with oxygenated perfluorocarbons.

METHODS: Fifteen pigs with a mean (+/- SD) weight of 45 +/- 5 kg were intubated and rendered hypoxic by ventilating them with a blend of nitrogen and oxygen to achieve subatmospheric concentrations of …

INTRODUCTION: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is present in over 90% of the world's population. This infection is considered benign, even though in limited cases EBV is associated with infectious and neoplastic conditions. Over the past decade, the EBV association with breast cancer has been constantly debated. Adding to this clinical and biological uncertainty, different techniques gave contradictory results for the presence of EBV in breast carcinoma specimens. In this study, minor groove binding (MGB)-TaqMan real time PCR was used to detect the presence of EBV DNA in both peripheral blood and tumor samples of selected patients. METHODS: Peripheral blood and breast …

Introduction

  • Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) remains a deadly disease with a 5-year survival of 8% for all stages combined (Siegel RL et al.). Currently, it’s the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and by 2020 it is projected to become the second leading cause (Rahib L, et al).
  • The poor prognosis in PDA is in part due to the limited therapies that are currently available.
  • This highlights the importance of high-throughput technologies for gene expression analyses and drug screens.
  • A recently developed NanoString Technologies nCounter® analysis system, an example of high-throughput technology, utilizes a color-coded barcode …

Prefabrication Of A Secondary Tram Flap., Geoffrey G. Hallock Md May 1996

Prefabrication Of A Secondary Tram Flap., Geoffrey G. Hallock Md

Department of Surgery

A secondary TRAM flap was prefabricated in a rat model using the rectus muscle. The right rectus muscle was elevated as an inferiorly pedicled muscle flap in one experimental group (n = 6) and as a superiorly pedicled muscle flap in a second group (n = 5) and then sandwiched between a silicone sheet and the abdominal skin. Two weeks later, the abdominal skin and attached rectus muscle were elevated over the silicone sheet as a secondary TRAM flap. The surviving skin paddle areas of these prefabricated TRAM flaps were compared with superiorly (n = 7) and inferiorly (n = …
