Abstract

Background: Exhaustion is now accepted in nursing culture. Staff suffering from sleepiness and fatigue are more likely to commit medical errors and sentinel events. Emergency department nurses have the greatest risk of committing these errors. Currently, there is no relief provided to shift workers beyond a single 30-minute meal break within a 12-hour period. Other researched mitigation strategies have either failed or are unrealistic in this environment.

Abstract

Palliative care was not the specialty of many hospitalists; thus, communication was hindered regarding ELC and advanced directives. Despite healthcare utilization in the United States, inadequate treatment of serious illnesses continues due to the lack of provider education and understanding of ELC (palliative and hospice care). Hospitalists are not formally or informally trained to care for patients that need palliative or hospice care. A quantitative, quasi- experimental and qualitative approach was utilized to determine if hospitalists who received educational training on palliative care communication and collaboration improved knowledge, skills, and collaboration when caring for end-of-life or critically ill patients. …

By the year 2030, nearly one in every two adults will have obesity (Body Mass Index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m².), and one in four adults will have severe obesity (BMI ≥35 kg/m²) (Ward et al., 2019). Equally troubling is that obesity poses a threat to the health of individuals, decreases the quality of life, shortens life expectancy, causes and worsens comorbidities, and increases all- cause mortality (Abdelaal et al., 2017). Background: Following a transfemoral amputation (TFA), osteoarthritis (OA) on the sound limb may occur secondary to overuse. Potential causative factors include gait abnormalities, increased knee load, and performing hopping activities without a prosthesis. Unilateral TFA patients may require a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to improve function.

Case Description and Methods: A 56-year-old male with a TFA who was diagnosed with left knee OA and was classified as a limited community ambulator underwent a TKA to restore function. Unlike the α-helical and β-sheet antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), our knowledge on amino acid-rich AMPs is limited. This article conducts a systematic study of rich AMPs (>25%) from different life kingdoms based on the Antimicrobial Peptide Database (APD) using the program R. Of 3425 peptides, 724 rich AMPs were identified. Rich AMPs are more common in animals and bacteria than in plants. In different animal classes, a unique set of rich AMPs is deployed. While histidine, proline, and arginine-rich AMPs are abundant in mammals, alanine, glycine, and leucine-rich AMPs are common in amphibians. Ten amino acids (Ala, Cys, Gly, His, …

Purpose/Background: Homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) is a useful predictor of treatment response in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Reported data on the frequency of HRD in EOC is largely based on analysis of patients treated at academic medical centers or who participated in clinical trials. We sought to characterize the frequency of HRD based on mutations in homologous recombination repair (HRR) genes, genomic instability (GI) and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) scores in a large community-based cohort of EOC patients who received genomic testing in the context of routine clinical care.

Regional anesthetics are often the preferred route for patients who are having orthopedic shoulder procedures (Rai & Bhutia, 2017). Traditionally, plain local anesthetics, like bupivacaine or ropivacaine, are used as the local anesthetic of choice because of their fast onset and relatively predictable duration of action. However, several different additives have been trialed to prolong the duration or improve the density of regional blocks.
