Abstract

Introduction: In the United States, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. Smoking increases the risk for lung cancer, and smoking cessation after diagnosis improves cancer survival and lowers rates of recurrence. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), we examined individual attitudes, perceived control, and subjective norms as predictors of lung cancer survivors’ intention to quit smoking.

Method: We conducted a secondary data analysis to examine attitudes, perceived control, and subjective norms of smoking in a sample of lung cancer survivors (N= 171). Analyses were limited to …

Importance: In a randomized clinical trial, heart failure (HF) hospitalizations were lower in patients managed with guidance from an implantable pulmonary artery pressure sensor compared with usual care. It remains unclear if ambulatory monitoring could also improve long-term clinical outcomes in real-world practice.

Objective: To determine the association between ambulatory hemodynamic monitoring and rates of HF hospitalization at 12 months in clinical practice.

Permanent junctional reciprocating tachycardia (PJRT) is a rare form of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). It generally presents in infants but can be difficult to diagnose. The characteristic EKG findings, response to Adenosine and persistence or frequent recurrences are helpful in making the diagnosis. It is usually difficult to manage with the initial and single medications used in SVT. Many patients are misdiagnosed and not treated effectively and end up having end stage cardiomyopathy and are diagnosed in patients referred for transplant. Hence all patients referred for a cardiac transplant with dilated cardiomyopathy need to be evaluated for this arrhythmia. If appropriate …

Despite countless surgical advances over the last several decades refining surgical approaches, repair techniques, and tools to treat tendon and tendon-to-bone injuries, we are still left with repair solutions that rely on fairly crude underlying mechanical principles. Musculoskeletal soft tissues have evolved to transfer high loads by optimizing stress distribution profiles across the tissue at each length scale. However, instead of mimicking these natural load transfer mechanisms, conventional suture approaches are limited by high load transfer across only a small number of anchor points within tissue. Introduction: Animal studies and rare human studies have suggested a negative effect of barbiturates on cardiac function. Although intravenous (IV) phenobarbital is used routinely in children in the clinical setting, studies in children are lacking. We performed a study to evaluate effect of IV phenobarbital loading on myocardial systolic function of children.

Methods: In a prospective pilot study in children without congenital heart defects, the effect of IV phenobarbital was evaluated on the left ventricular systolic function measured by ejection fraction (EF) by Simpson's method via an echocardiogram.
