OBJECTIVE: A high number of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) patients with brain metastasis who have not had surgery often have a negative outlook. Radiotherapy remains a most common and effective method. Nomograms were developed to forecast the cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) in NSCLC individuals with nonoperative brain metastases who underwent radiotherapy.
METHODS: Information was gathered from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database about patients diagnosed with NSCLC who had brain metastases not suitable for surgery. Nomograms were created and tested using multivariate Cox regression models to forecast CSS and OS at intervals of 1, …

Prediction The Dose Distributions Of Prostate Cancer Patients Using Deep Learning, Pumipat Chaikamthorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) is one of the advanced modalities in recent radiotherapy. It uses the inverse treatment planning system for optimization and dose calculation. However, this approach is a trial-and-error process, which takes a long time. An accurate deep-learning model that can predict the dose would solve this issue. This approach can save more treatment planning time, by guiding the planners to the optimum dose while maintaining the plan quality. The 40 previously treated prostate cancer plans were collected the volumetric information of PTV and OARs, overlapping volume, and the dosimetric information. The regression deep learning model, which …

Optimal Dual-Time-Point Dynamic 68ga-Psma-11 Pet/Ct Protocols For Parametric Imaging Generation In Prostate Cancer Patients, Paphawarin Burasothikul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Globally, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer for men. Prostate cancer patients presenting metastasis exhibit a poor prognosis, consequently leading to diminished survival rates. Thus, 68Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT examination plays a critical role in prostate cancer diagnosis. Parametric imaging techniques offer the potential to improve the accuracy of quantification analysis in PET/CT diagnosis, but their effectiveness is constrained by lengthy acquisition protocols. This study developed optimal dual-time-point (DTP) parametric imaging using shortened dynamic 68Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT scans in prostate cancer patients and investigated the feasibility of parametric images in terms of image quality by comparing them with a routine standardized …

To understand neurological complications of COVID-19 better both acutely and for recovery, we measured markers of brain injury, inflammatory mediators, and autoantibodies in 203 hospitalised participants; 111 with acute sera (1-11 days post-admission) and 92 convalescent sera (56 with COVID-19-associated neurological diagnoses). Here we show that compared to 60 uninfected controls, tTau, GFAP, NfL, and UCH-L1 are increased with COVID-19 infection at acute timepoints and NfL and GFAP are significantly higher in participants with neurological complications. Inflammatory mediators (IL-6, IL-12p40, HGF, M-CSF, CCL2, and IL-1RA) are associated with both altered consciousness and markers of brain injury. Autoantibodies are more common …

BACKGROUND: Urinoma, a rare condition resulting from urine leakage due to trauma to the kidney, bladder, or urethra, is typically diagnosed using enhanced computed tomography urogram with delayed imaging. This report presents two cases of urinoma likely caused by overdistention of the renal pelvis following excessive fluid intake and the presence of a ureteral stone.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present two cases of 36-year-old and 38-year-old patients who presented with flank pain. point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) played a pivotal role in identifying perinephric fluid in Morrison's space and the splenorenal space, respectively. These ultrasound findings guided further investigations, leading to definitive diagnoses …
The Effect Of Non-Immersive Virtual Reality Radiographic Positioning Simulation On First-Year Radiography Students' Image Evaluation Of Routine Positioning Errors, Ellie M. Miller
Theses & Dissertations
Optimal radiographic image quality is critical because it affects the accuracy of the radiologist’s interpretation. Radiologic technologists are obligated to obtain diagnostic images while minimizing patient radiation. However, repeated images due to technologist error have increased in recent years. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of non-immersive virtual reality (VR) simulation on first-year students’ image evaluation of common positioning errors on routine knee and lumbar spine protocols. Research questions were 1) Does guided instruction using non-immersive radiographic positioning simulation software lead to improved image evaluation scores? 2) How well do participants describe evaluation of positioning errors after guided instruction …

Self-Calibrated Subspace Reconstruction For Multidimensional Mr Fingerprinting For Simultaneous Relaxation And Diffusion Quantification, Jessie E.P. Sun, Ken Sakaie, Mark A. Griswold
Faculty Scholarship
Purpose: To propose a new reconstruction method for multidimensional MR fingerprinting (mdMRF) to address shading artifacts caused by physiological motion-induced measurement errors without navigating or gating. Methods: The proposed method comprises two procedures: self-calibration and subspace reconstruction. The first procedure (self-calibration) applies temporally local matrix completion to reconstruct low-resolution images from a subset of under-sampled data extracted from the k-space center. The second procedure (subspace reconstruction) utilizes temporally global subspace reconstruction with pre-estimated temporal subspace from low-resolution images to reconstruct aliasing-free, high-resolution, and time-resolved images. After reconstruction, a customized outlier detection algorithm was employed to automatically detect and remove images …

Anal cancer incidence is significantly higher in people living with HIV as HIV increases the oncogenic potential of human papillomavirus. The incidence of anal cancer in the United States has recently increased, with diagnosis and treatment hampered by high loss-to-follow-up rates. Novel methods for the automated, real-time diagnosis of AIN 2+ could enable "see and treat" strategies, reducing loss-to-follow-up rates. A previous retrospective study demonstrated that the accuracy of a high-resolution microendoscope (HRME) coupled with a deep learning model was comparable to expert clinical impression for diagnosis of AIN 2+ (sensitivity 0.92 [P = 0.68] and specificity 0.60 [P = …

Pediatric blunt trauma is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, and computed tomography (CT) imaging is vital for accurate evaluation and management. Pediatric trauma centers (PTCs) have selective CT practices, while non-PTCs may differ, resulting in potential variations in CT utilization. The objective of this study is to delineate disparities in CT utilization for pediatric blunt trauma patients between PTCs and non-PTCs. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following established guidelines, searching PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to March 3, 2023. All studies examining CT utilization in the management of pediatric (aged < 21 years) blunt trauma and specifying the type of trauma center(s) were included, and data were extracted and analyzed using STATA software version 17.0. An analysis of 30 studies revealed significant variations in CT scan utilization among pediatric blunt trauma patients across different types of trauma centers. PTCs exhibited lower pooled rates of abdominopelvic CT scans (35.4% vs. 44.9%, p < 0.01), cranial CT scans (36.9% vs. 42.9%, p < 0.01), chest CT scans (14.5% vs. 25.4%, p < 0.01), and cervical spine CT scans (23% vs. 45%, p < 0.01) compared to adult or mixed trauma centers (ATCs/MTCs). PTCs had a pooled rate of 54% for receiving at least one CT scan, while ATCs/MTCs had a higher rate of 69.3% (p < 0.05). The studies demonstrated considerable heterogeneity. These findings underscore the need to conduct further research to understand the reasons for the observed variations and to promote appropriate imaging usage, minimize radiation exposure, and encourage collaboration between pediatric and adult trauma centers.

An immunosuppressive microenvironment causes poor tumor T cell infiltration and is associated with reduced patient overall survival in colorectal cancer. How to improve treatment responses in these tumors is still a challenge. Using an integrated screening approach to identify cancer-specific vulnerabilities, we identified complement receptor C5aR1 as a druggable target, which when inhibited improved radiotherapy, even in tumors displaying immunosuppressive features and poor CD8+ T cell infiltration. While C5aR1 is well-known for its role in the immune compartment, we found that C5aR1 is also robustly expressed on malignant epithelial cells, highlighting potential tumor cell-specific functions. C5aR1 targeting resulted in increased …

PURPOSE: Two-dimensional radiotherapy is often used to treat cervical cancer in low- and middle-income countries, but treatment planning can be challenging and time-consuming. Neural networks offer the potential to greatly decrease planning time through automation, but the impact of the wide range of hyperparameters to be set during training on model accuracy has not been exhaustively investigated. In the current study, we evaluated the effect of several convolutional neural network architectures and hyperparameters on 2D radiotherapy treatment field delineation.
METHODS: Six commonly used deep learning architectures were trained to delineate four-field box apertures on digitally reconstructed radiographs for cervical cancer …
