Youth e-cigarette use has increased significantly in recent years. E-cigarette use has many negative health effects supported by the literature including increased risk of respiratory infections, nicotine addiction, and the potential for cancer. E-cigarette screening creates an opportunity for patient education and counseling, as well as potentially decreases e-cigarette use. However, healthcare providers do not regularly screen adolescents for e-cigarette use. According to previous studies, the main barrier to e-cigarette screening is healthcare providers’ knowledge regarding e-cigarette health effects. All students and technologists must pass the national board exam administered by the American registry of Radiologic Technologist. This exam assesses the participant in patient care, image acquisition, radiation safety and imaging procedures. The performance problem identified is the increased amount of radiologic technologists and radiologic technology students either failing the registry due to being unprepared, or due to insufficient continuing education credits. Through this quality improvement project, we have assessed the current fellows' upper endoscopy skill level during their first year and determined that the time to achieving proficiency is significantly longer than desired. The goal is to prepare new fellows for endoscopy prior to the beginning of their rotations with a curriculum that includes assigned reading materials, videos, and simulated endoscopic cases, to promote safety and increase satisfaction of patients by improving the readiness, skill level, and the confidence of first year inexperienced fellows.

Approximately 5.7 million people in the United States are living with dementia, with numbers expected to rise to 13.8 million by 2050 As prevalence grows, it is crucial to train future providers to meet the complex and diverse needs of patients and caregivers. Virtual reality (VR) is a growing tool in medical education, but few studies explore this tool for dementia education. Oncogenesis is an extremely complex phenomenon. The mechanisms by which cancer is induced is only partially known. Consequently, therapeutic targets may be uncertain and results are often unsatisfactory. The purpose of this paper is to develop a trans-level and multiple transdisciplinary perspective describing the kaleidoscopic reality of oncogenesis. This manner of understanding oncogenesis as a complex process characterized by a non-linear dynamic, far from equilibrium and with unpredictable evolution, transcends the classical perspective and requires a paradigm shift. This approach is also facilitated by recent studies that focus on group phenomena, with emerging behaviors in a continuous phase transition. Biological …

While internal medicine residents at Maine Medical Center provide care for many refugees and immigrants, there is not a formal international health curriculum to equip residents to care for this vulnerable population. Since 2002, 3,793 refugees have arrived in Maine for resettlement. Our aim was to survey residents about their interest in added international health instruction and design an educational curriculum for these physicians.

Opening new residency programs in community hospitals is one strategy to address to address physician shortage. Previous reports have shown better mortality outcomes in university based hospitals. Background: The widening gap between innovations in the medical field and the dissemination of such information to doctors may affect the quality of care. Offline computer-based digital education (OCDE) may be a potential solution to overcoming the geographical, financial, and temporal obstacles faced by doctors.
Objective: The objectives of this systematic review were to evaluate the effectiveness of OCDE compared with face-to-face learning, no intervention, or other types of digital learning for improving medical doctors' knowledge, cognitive skills, and patient-related outcomes. Introduction: In 2006, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved an integrated 5 year vascular surgery residency program. Operative experience can be used as a surrogate marker for success in the evolving field of vascular surgery training.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the operative experience of those graduating from the traditional (5+2) vascular training program with the integrated (0+5) program.

Objectives: This study aims to assess physician assistant (PA) students' experiences with social media (SM) as a part of their medical education.

Methods: The study is split into two phases: Phase 1- A cross-sectional survey emailed to all PA students at four PA school campuses to assess students' prior SM experiences (226 responses, 71.1% response rate); and Phase 2- Inclusion of SM educational resources, via Twitter, within lectures performed at two PA schools. A phase-2 survey assessed students' opinions of educational SM (50 responses, 59.5% response rate) and SM usage was tracked.

Introduction: Guidelines recommend that primary care providers complete organ-based routine cancer screening for all transgender patients. Training on critical transgender health topics like cancer screening, as well as residents' confidence in addressing issues their transgender patients may face, remains limited among graduate medical education (GME) programs. Online case-based modules are an effective tool for skills improvement in GME, but their application to transgender health topics has not been assessed.

A national focus for healthcare reform is preventing hospital readmissions. Thirty-day unplanned hospital readmissions impact patient outcomes and are costly to the healthcare system. This project explored the impact between the discharge navigator and 30-day unplanned readmissions for heart failure and sepsis populations in a 238-bed community hospital located in central Virginia. The primary aim of this discharge navigator project was to reduce 30-day readmissions for the heart failure and sepsis populations to meet the goals of the top quartile for like hospitals and the evaluation of cost avoidance for these readmissions.
