Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel are the first line of treatment and are the first exposed health care workers to infectious diseases (IDs). Consequently, the EMS setting is a relatively vulnerable environment for disease transmission and cross-contamination. Also, serious and emerging IDs, such as highly pathogenic viral hemorrhagic fevers and novel Coronaviruses, in a time of increased globalization, require comprehensive EMS training and preparedness. Diabetes is a recognized risk factor for postoperative infection, acute renal failure, ileus, and lengthy hospital stay. Optimal screening, management, and scheduling of elective surgery for diabetic patients has been shown to improve quality care, decrease complications, and increase the efficiency and lower the costs of preoperative patient care. However, surgery cancellations are common due to inadequate preoperative glycemic control and poor intraoperative glycemic control, which is a recognized risk factor for perioperative or postoperative complications. Studies indicate that there is an affective attachment bond, and related emotional involvement that exists between the companion animal and their human owners. Patient companion-animal death within the veterinary hospital, is a daily occurrence, with death rates per patient being significantly higher than in human health care. This comparatively higher death rate is due to the commonplace utilization of professionally sanctioned euthanasia to relieve animal pain and suffering. Over 150,000 new cases of colon cancer were diagnosed in the US in 2019. Stage and age at diagnosis are important prognostic factors for overall survival (OS). For the age group 70-79, the OS for females with poorly differentiated stage IV colon cancer at 1, 2 and 5 years after surgery is 39%, 15%, and 2%, respectively. We present a case of a 77-year-old female with significant cardiac history. She was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer complicated with enteric fistula. Due to her initial performance status and comorbidities, she was not a candidate for surgery or systemic chemotherapy. Nonetheless, …

Inpatient plan of care meetings support efforts to encourage collaborative practice and patient-family centered care and result in an effective strategy to enhance communication and patient satisfaction. Clinical team members participated in patient/family centered plan of care meetings at a community hospital in a selected inpatient unit with full time hospitalist physicians. Quantitative data were gathered pre/post implementation from the external Hospital Consumer Assessment of Health Care Providers (HCAHPS) survey. BACKGROUND: While the Association of American Medical Colleges encourages medical schools to incorporate quality improvement and patient safety (QI/PS) into their curriculum, medical students continue to have limited QI/PS exposure. To prepare medical students for careers that involve QI/PS, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement chapter at an allopathic medical school and school of allied health professions initiated self-directed learning by offering student-led workshops to equip learners with skills to improve the quality and safety of healthcare processes.

Background: The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a preventable, sexually transmitted infection. The vaccines for HPV are safe and effective, but previous research demonstrated that nursing students have low knowledge levels and vaccine uptake. Low knowledge and attitude levels in nurses and nurse practitioners can influence parental and patient decision making for HPV vaccination.
