In the treatment of renal adenocarcinoma, radiation therapy alone is insufficient. Preoperative radiation increases the resectability rate and delays metastasis, but overall improvement in survival is tentative. Postoperative radiation has not been of proven benefit. While palliation may be achieved, relatively high doses of radiation are required.

Diagnostic And Therapeutic Immunology Of Renal Cell Cancer, Richard C. Klugo

There is evidence that renal cell carcinoma can alter the host immunologic system in several modalities. Diagnostic immunologic monitoring techniques reviewed in this report include delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction (DCHR), absolute peripheral lymphocyte count (APLC), lymphocyte mitogen response (LMR), T-lymphocyte population (erythrocyte rosette), microcytotoxicity assay, in vitro monocyte chemotaxis, and serum blocking factors. Therapeutic immunologic modalities include xenogeneic immune ribonucleic acid (RNA), intradermal BCG, preoperative transcatheter renal artery embolization, immune plasma transfusion, transfer factor, and polymerized autologous tumor.

In the past, chemotherapy of renal adenocarcinoma has been relatively unsuccessful. The progestational agent, medroxy progesterone acetate (MPA), has been the most effective single agent, even though the response rate probably does not exceed 12%. This report describes the results of a program of combination therapy with MPA, cyclophosphamide, hydroxyurea, vinblastine and prednisone that was used on 42 patients, ten of whom had received prior MPA therapy. One complete remission and seven partial remissions were observed, oniyone of whom had received prior MPA therapy. Treatment of metastatic renal adenocarcinoma with combination chemotherapy should probably include MPA and adriamycin. The role …

A rapid new method for measuring glomerular filtration rates using 111In diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (111In- DTPA) was evaluated with 39 patients who showed marked impairment of renal function (creatinine clearance less than 20 ml/min). A simple, single compartment system was assumed. For comparison, parallel inulin and creatinine clearances were performed. High linear correlations (r = 0.96-0.97) were demonstrated when 111In- DTPA clearances were compared with the standard nonisotopic tests. Isolation Of An Acid-Fast Organism From The Aqueous Humor In A Case Of Sarcoidosis, C. L. Barth, M. S. Judge, L. H. Mattman, P. C. Hessburg

The anterior chamber fluid from the eye of this patient with sarcoidosis was found to contain microcolonies of a cellwall-deficient organism that was propagated and identified as acid-fast by the Intensified Acid-Fast stain. The colonies were inoculated into mice and retrieved from the dead or sacrificed animals. This report suggests that the acid-fast microbe in the aqueous humor of this case of uveitis-sarcoidosis may be the same organism as that found in the blood in sarcoidosis. Thus, it may be associated not only with the primary disease, but also with the complications of Boeck's sarcoidosis.

Portal Hypertension In Children: Three Case Reports And Review Of Recent Progress In Treatment, Philip J. Howard

The diagnosis and surgical management of extrahepatic portal hypertension in infants and children have improved dramatically in the last 50 years, as evidenced by the reported mortalities of 46% in 1928-1935 and only 12% in 1974. The diagnosis Is often evident from the first sudden gastrointestinal bleeding Incident and can be verified quickly with fiberoptic esophagoscopy and x-rays. The surgeon has a choice of multiple shunt procedures to control portal pressure.

The Effect Of Escherichia Coli Endotoxin On The Cat Periapical Tissues, Thomas G. Dwyer

The periapical tissue reaction to three concentrations of endotoxin solutions and to a sterile saline control solution was examined in six adult cats. The maxillary and mandibular cuspids were isolated and the pulps extirpated with barbed broaches. The four solutions (1, 10, 100 μg/ml endotoxin, and saline) were then injected into the four prepared teeth for each cat and the access cavities sealed with IRM.

At two week intervals, two cats were sacrificed and the specimens removed, while the remaining animals were retreated as previously described. The block tissue sections were radiographed, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and prepared for …

Our primary objectives were to determine if orally administered charcoal effectively decreased intestinal gas, and relieved subjective symptoms associated with a high gas producing meal.

The adsorptive properties of charcoal for those gases usually found in intestines (CO₂, H₂, CH₄, H₂S) were first tested by placing measured samples of each gas alone with weighted samples of activated charcoal in a respirometer.

The degree of adsorption of each gas by charcoal was determined. Charcoal effectively adsorbed H₂ and CO₂.

Cell mediated immune (CMI) cytotoxic reactivity of Balb/c mice against H238 cells, a Herpes simplex virus (HSV) Type 2 - induced sarcoma, was measured by the ¹²⁵IUdR release assay. The Balb/c mouse response to the growing HSV-induced tumor, treated with radiation and , was measured by survival rate, tumor growth and immune cytotoxicity of spleen and peritoneal exudate cells (PEC) as determined by ¹²⁵IUdR release assay. Subcutaneous (s.c.) inoculation of 1 x 10⁶ H238 cells (high dose) produced progressive tumor growth while s.c. inoculation of 1 x 10⁴ H238 cells (low dose) produced no tumors. A …
