The effect of GnRH administered around the time of maternal recognition of prenancy on the embryonic survival rate was studied. This study used 67 adult female alpacas sexually receptive to the male, and bearing a preovulatory follicle ≥ 7mm, detected by rectal ultrasonography. Animals were distributed in three groups: Go (n=23) as control; G1 (n=22) received 6 µg GnRH on day 4 after ovulation; and G2 (n=22) received 4 µg GnRH on days 8 and 9 after ovulation. Mice with homozygous null mutations in the high-density lipoprotein receptor SR-BI (scavenger receptor class B, type I) and apolipoprotein E genes fed a low-fat diet exhibit a constellation of pathologies shared with human atherosclerotic coronary heart disease (CHD): hypercholesterolemia, occlusive coronary atherosclerosis, myocardial infarctions, cardiac dysfunction (heart enlargement, reduced systolic function and ejection fraction, and ECG abnormalities), and premature death (mean age 6 weeks). They also exhibit a block in RBC maturation and abnormally high plasma unesterified-to-total cholesterol ratio (0.8) with associated abnormal lipoprotein morphology (lamellar/vesicular and stacked discoidal particles reminiscent of those in lecithin/cholesterol acyltransferase deficiency and cholestasis). A case of fetal bovine abortion due to Actinomyces pyogenes in a dairy herd of Cieneguilla valley of Lima, Peru is reported. A bovine fetus of four months of gestation was aborted and submitted for laboratory examination. Macroscopic lesions in fetal tissues were not found with the exception of numerous white foci up to 1mm in diameter in the lungs. Various fetal tissue samples were collected for virologic, bacteriologic and histopathologic examinations. Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and Neospora caninum antigen were ruled out by immunohistochemistry but, pure colonies of A. pyogenes were isolated from the lung and other fetal …

The present invention is directed to methods of using pro-NAD agents capable of enhancing the dermal and epidermal skin cell NAD content. These pro-NAD agents may be administered topically, orally, or parenterally to enhance DNA repair and other protective responses to DNA damage. The invention further relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising pro-NAD agents that effectively elevate intracellular NAD content. Finally, the invention relates to the method of using the pro-NAD agents to treat disorders such as sunburn and other skin deterioration that results from DNA damage in skin cells.

ABSTRACT
[Ca2+]i and electrical activity were compared in isolated β-cells and islets using standard techniques. In islets, raising glucose caused a decrease in [Ca2+]i followed by a plateau and then fast (2–3 min−1), slow (0.2–0.8 min−1), or a mixture of fast and slow [Ca2+]i oscillations. In β-cells, glucose transiently decreased and then increased [Ca2+]i, but no islet-like oscillations occurred. Tea flavonoids, including (-)-epicatechin (EC), (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECG), (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) have been shown to have chemopreventive activity in cancer. Studies in animals and humans suggest that these dietary compounds have a very low oral bioavailability. However, the reason behind this limited bioavailability as well as the mechanisms underlying absorption is not clearly understood. The overall hypothesis of this dissertation project is that the human intestinal absorption of (-)-epicatechin (EC) and its gallate, (-)epicatechin- 3-gallate (ECG) is limited and regulated both by multiple transport mechanisms and metabolism.
