Obesity is a major epidemic across the United States, and weight loss through diet and physical activity alone is not sustainable. Treatment with tirzepatide and semaglutide have proven to be effective for obesity management in the short-term, but more research is needed to understand how certain types of medications impact weight loss over time. Background: Wernicke’s encephalopathy is a life-threatening neurological disorder caused by thiamine deficiency, most commonly associated with alcoholism. However, postoperative nutritional deficiencies in young patients undergoing bariatric procedures are increasingly recognized. This case is unique due to the rapid succession of bariatric and cholecystectomy surgeries, development of classic Wernicke’s symptoms with a normal MRI, and diagnostic delay due to overlapping differential diagnoses including intracranial hypotension and myelopathy.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a prevalent chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia. Traditionally, this disease is managed with medication and dietary modifications. However, recent studies have shown the potential role of zinc in diabetes management. We explained the complex interplay between zinc deficiency, impaired glucose metabolism, and the progression of diabetes to elucidate the potential therapeutic benefits of zinc supplementation.

Background:

Night shift work is essential in the hospital yet shift work among nurses is linked to negative outcomes such as chronic fatigue and cardiometabolic illnesses. Furthermore, nurses working night shift are more likely to have aberrant glucose levels, defined as greater than 140 mg/dl. Currently, it is unclear whether nurses working night shift eat differently than those working day shift which may explain aberrant glucose levels.

Introduction: Adiponectin is a protein-based hormone that is secreted by adipocytes and assists in several metabolic processes including glucose regulation and fatty acid oxidation. Low adiponectin levels have been linked to metabolic conditions such as increased insulin resistance and obesity. Previous studies have shown that circulating iron has an inverse relationship with adiponectin levels. It is unknown whether dietary iron has the same association with adiponectin levels.

Usually not diagnosed until open laparotomy, aortoduodenalfistulas (ADF) are one of the rarest complications of intestinal transplant surgery. With an incidence rate of only 0.04% at autopsy and only 250 documented cases since the early 1800’s, aortoduodenal fistulas are the most deadly complications of intestinal transplantation with a mortality rate of 100% without surgical intervention. A 39 year old, two-time multi-visceral transplant African American female patient suffered from a primary aortoduodenal fistula formation in a primary modified multi-visceral transplant aortic stump graft site.
