Defining the core content for each scientific discipline in a modern preclinical medical education curriculum is critical to ensure optimal student learning and application of foundational knowledge for clinical practice. Attendees of the Association of Medical School Microbiology and Immunology Chairs (AMSMIC) Educational Strategies Workshop recently highlighted the need for updated medical microbiology learning objectives, given the shift in medical education toward less time for preclinical coursework and more integrated learning. Herein, we describe the process of developing a comprehensive, educator-driven set of knowledge objectives for medical microbiology. These objectives emphasize common pathogens, as well as pathogens associated with severe …

87 - Maternal Dental Status And Caries Among Siblings, Monica Walker, Charity Hammond, Angela Wilson, Denise Mckinney, Katie Protogyrou
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Research has suggested that birth order or environmental factors affect siblings' oral health status during childhood. However, more recent research suggests that the strongest predictor of children's oral health status is the mother's oral health status. This project investigated the association between the oral health status of the mother during pregnancy and bacteria (biofilms) identified in cavitated lesions (dental caries) of their children’s exfoliated primary teeth. Five consenting maternal participants anonymously donated their children's primary teeth and completed a questionnaire about their oral health status during each pregnancy. After visually identifying the exfoliated teeth with dental caries, the biofilms were …
Blood Culture Utilization: How Many Follow-Up Cultures Are Needed?, George Jones, Jennifer Hanrahan
Blood Culture Utilization: How Many Follow-Up Cultures Are Needed?, George Jones, Jennifer Hanrahan
Department of Medicine Faculty Publications
Background: Follow-up blood cultures (BCx) are ordered after an initial positive culture in many instances. The number of follow-up cultures needed is not clear. Obtaining unnecessary BCx may cause unintended consequences. The optimal balance between stewardship and patient safety warrants investigation. We sought to assess the frequency with which a third set is positive after a negative second BCx. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of BCx submitted to the microbiology laboratory from 1/1/18-11/1/23. We included all patients ≥18 years who had at least two follow-up BCx drawn 24-72 hours after an initial positive culture. Data were collected from electronic …

Background: The objective of this study was to explore the prevalence of microbiological contamination of mobile phones that belong to clinicians in intensive care units (ICUs), pediatric intensive care units (PICUs), and neonatal care units (NCUs) in all public secondary care hospitals in Kuwait. The study also aimed to describe mobile phones disinfection practices as well as factors associated with mobile phone contamination.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that included all clinicians with mobile phones in ICUs, PICUs, and NCUs in all secondary care hospitals in Kuwait. Samples for culture were collected from mobile phones and transported for microbiological …
Nonthermal Plasma Jet Efficacy On Candida Kefyr, Amber Marie Mattson Jackson
Nonthermal Plasma Jet Efficacy On Candida Kefyr, Amber Marie Mattson Jackson
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The inactivation abilities of a nonthermal plasma jet were investigated with the yeast C. kefyr, a pathogen with increasing importance in healthcare. The plasma is generated using a microhollow cathode discharge (MHCD) geometry operated with a DC voltage of 2 kV and a current of 30 mA using air as the operating gas at an airflow rate of 8 SLM. The plasma discharge approaches room temperature at a few mm away from the plasma jet allowing for the use on heat sensitive surfaces. Dry air and humid air were used as the operating gas to see if humidity plays …
