Oscillometry And Pulmonary Magnetic Resonance Imaging In Asthma And Copd, Rachel L Eddy, Andrew Westcott, Geoffrey N Maksym, Grace Parraga, Ronald J Dandurand

Developed over six decades ago, pulmonary oscillometry has re-emerged as a noninvasive and effort-independent method for evaluating respiratory-system impedance in patients with obstructive lung disease. Here, we evaluated the relationships between hyperpolarized

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) leads to disabling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Current therapy aimed at slowing lung disease progression includes exogenous alpha-1 antitrypsin augmentation therapy, but there are few potential new treatments under development. Currently used measurements of AATD-related emphysema include the forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and the diffusing capacity of carbon monoxide (DLCO); both are relatively insensitive to therapy, although computed tomography (CT) lung density measurements have been shown to worsen more slowly in treated patients.

Deep Learning Approach For Automatic Out-Of-Plane Needle Localisation For Semi-Automatic Ultrasound Probe Calibration, Leah A. Groves, Blake Vanberlo, Terry M. Peters, Elvis C.S. Chen Jan 2019

The authors present a deep learning algorithm for the automatic centroid localisation of out-of-plane US needle reflections to produce a semi-automatic ultrasound (US) probe calibration algorithm. A convolutional neural network was trained on a dataset of 3825 images at a 6 cm imaging depth to predict the position of the centroid of a needle reflection. Applying the automatic centroid localisation algorithm to a test set of 614 annotated images produced a root mean squared error of 0.62 and 0.74 mm (6.08 and 7.62 pixels) in the axial and lateral directions, …

White Matter Integrity Is Associated With Gait Impairment And Falls In Mild Cognitive Impairment. Results From The Gait And Brain Study, Jonatan A. Snir, Robert Bartha, Manuel Montero-Odasso

Medical Biophysics Publications

© 2019 The Authors Background: Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is an intermediate state between normal cognition and dementia that is associated with twice the risk of falls. It is unknown whether white matter integrity (WMI) is associated with increased risk of falls in MCI. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if early changes in WMI were associated with gait impairment and falls. Methods: Forty-three participants with MCI from the Gait and Brain Study underwent standardized assessment of cognition, gait performance under single and dual-task conditions (walking while talking), and WMI using 3 Tesla diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Macro-structural …

© 2019 Valeriy G. Ostapchenko et al. Apoptosis is a feature of stroke and Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet there is no accepted method to detect or follow apoptosis in the brain in vivo. We developed a bifunctional tracer [ 68 Ga]Ga-TC3-OGDOTA containing a cell-penetrating peptide separated from fluorescent Oregon Green and 68 Ga-bound labels by the caspase-3 recognition peptide DEVD. We hypothesized that this design would allow [ 68 Ga]Ga-TC3-OGDOTA to accumulate in apoptotic cells. In vitro, Ga-TC3-OGDOTA labeled apoptotic neurons following exposure to camptothecin, oxygen-glucose deprivation, and β-amyloid oligomers. In vivo, PET showed accumulation of [ 68 Ga]Ga-TC3-OGDOTA in …

© 2019 The Authors The harmonized Canadian Dementia Imaging Protocol (CDIP) has been developed to suit the needs of a number of co-occurring Canadian studies collecting data on brain changes across adulthood and neurodegeneration. In this study, we verify the impact of CDIP parameters compliance on total brain volume variance using 86 scans of the same individual acquired on various scanners. Data included planned data collection acquired within the Consortium pour l'identification précoce de la maladie Alzheimer - Québec (CIMA-Q) and Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA) studies, as well as opportunistic data collection from various protocols. For images …

Pharmacodynamics Of Monoamine Transporter Releasing Agents And Reuptake Inhibitors, Alexa Holloway Jan 2019

Pharmacodynamics Of Monoamine Transporter Releasing Agents And Reuptake Inhibitors, Alexa Holloway

Theses and Dissertations

Ligands of the human monoamine transporters encompass a wide range of both illicit and therapeutic drugs that act upon neural circuitry related to reward, motivation, and the processing of salient stimuli. The present study utilizes two methods for analyzing transporter substrates and inhibitors in order to characterize activity and assess potency. The first measures transient changes in intracellular calcium as a surrogate for transporter activity by harnessing the electrical coupling of monoamine transporters and L-type calcium channels. This is used to analyze novel chimera of the strong hDAT inhibitors methylphenidate and -PPP in order to assess the contribution of specific …
