The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) on autogenous cortical bone resorption in rats. Fifty-six male Wistar rats were used and divided into the baseline group (n = 8), the experimental group (n = 24) and the control group (n = 24). The experimental and contol groups were subdivided into three groups. Each subgroup was followed-up for 2, 4, and 12 weeks respectively. Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a widely used antiepileptic drug. It is used to control grandmal seizure as well as in the treatment of neuralgia. The drug is characterised by slow and irregular gastrointestinal absorption due to its low water solubility. In clinics, for conventional dosage forms of CBZ, single daily dosing is insufficient; effective CBZ level is provided by multiple drug administration. Multiplicity of dosage causes inconsistent plasma CBZ levels leading to side effects because of narrow therapeutic and toxic levels. Patients who have intestinal cancer are prone to malnutrition, which can result in deterioration of physiological function, poor wound healing, increased risk of infection and prolonged hospital stay. These complications are particularly relevant after colorectal surgery. Early enteral feeding, to enhance nutritional status, has been reported to reduce post-operative complications, length of hospital stay and morbidity and mortality after upper gastro-intestinal cancer surgery. The objective of our study was to assess procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) plasma concentrations in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing haemodialysis sessions and the effect of intermittent haemodialysis on PCT levels. We measured plasma PCT and CRP levels in 43 ESRD patients without evidence of systemic infection at the beginning of haemodialysis and 4 hours later. Control group consisted of 40 volunteers with no complaints. Venous blood samples were collected from the patient before and after hemodialysis and the control groups. This article concerning the rate of accurate diagnosis of keratinocyte carcinoma is reported by experienced surgeons. Keratinocyte carcinoma (KC) has been recently used in order to define basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Although an histopathologic analysis is standard for diagnosis, clinical diagnosis is still important for the choice of proper treatment. In this prospective study, 204 lesions were excised following clinical pre-diagnosis of keratinocyte carcinoma. The lesions were excised from the proper surgical limit for clinical diagnosis and sent for histopathologic examination. Beta-thalassemia and Sickle cell anemia are serious health problems in the Antalya Province of Turkey as well as World Wide. We aimed to summarize data obtained from the prenatal diagnosis for beta-thalassemia and sickle cell anemia of 103 fetuses. All samples were cytogenetically and molecular genetically examined during a period of 4 years. Molecular testing using RDBH and direct DNA sequencing was performed by using amplified DNA from chorionic villi samples at 9-14 weeks of gestation, while mutations in the parents were determined in advance. Epidemiological data related to the role of thyroid hormones in the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and metabolic syndrome (MS) in Turkish adults are lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between Down syndrome and the level of placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP) in amniotic fluid. A total of 279 amniotic fluid samples taken between 14 and 24 gestational weeks were investigated in this study. Karyotype analysis was made in all samples. In 10 samples trisomy 21 was determined, in one sample trisomy 18, in two samples 47,XXY, in six samples various structural chromosomal anomalies and in 260 samples normal karyotype. Since leukoplakia is a premalignant condition, it is evident that an effective means of control would contribute to reducing the mortality and morbidity of oral cancer. The reactivity of free radicals and singlet oxygen is believed to be an important factor in the pathogenesis of many degenerative diseases including carcinogenesis. Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder. Decreased platelet survival is the main pathogenesis, which is related to platelet antibodies (APA). The levels of these antibodies are correlated with relapse and remission which was shown for the first time by our group. Although APA levels decrease in remission they do not disappear as we have shown. The aim of this study was to develop a human tumor necrosis factor alpha (hTNF-\alpha) ELISA system because specific and sensitive measurement of low levels of circulating TNF-a is very important for enlightening the immunopathologial mechanisms associated with TNF-\alpha. Monoclonal antibodies 6A4c and 8A6 were produced against hTNF-\alpha and were used as the capture antibody and the tracer antibody respectively for the first hTNF-\alpha ELISA system (6A4c/biotin-8A6). Murine polyclonal IgG was used as the tracer antibody in the second hTNF-\alpha ELISA system (6A4c/biotin-polyclonal IgG). Many diagnostic tests exist to assess the salivary and lacrimal involvement in Sjögren's syndrome (SS), but there is still disagreement. The purpose of this study was to examine salivary proteins in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome and healthy control subjects by the polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, as well as the applicability of the method. The polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, applied in our examinations, is a simple and rapid method, requiring only a minute amount of saliva for the analysis. The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the effects of two different arches, the Connecticut Intrusion Arch (CIA) and the Utility Intrusion Arch (UIA). A total of 20 patients (15 girls and 5 boys) having Class I or Class II malocclusions with deep bite were divided into two groups. Lateral cephalograms were obtained before treatment and after intrusion of upper incisors. Statistical evaluation of lateral cephalograms revealed that upper incisors were intruded and protruded, upper first molars were extruded, and lower incisors were protruded in both groups. The most common primary brain tumor in adults is glioblastoma. These tumors are highly invasive and aggressive with a mean survival time of nine to twelve months from diagnosis to death. Current treatment modalities are unable to significantly prolong survival in patients diagnosed with glioblastoma. As such, glioma is an attractive target for developing novel therapeutic approaches utilizing gene therapy. This review will examine the available preclinical models for glioma including xenographs, syngeneic and genetic models. BACKGROUND: Paralemmin (Palm) is a prenyl-palmitoyl anchored membrane protein that can drive membrane and process formation in neurons. Earlier studies have shown brain preferred Palm expression, although this protein is a major water insoluble protein in chicken lens fiber cells and the Palm gene may be regulated by Pax6. METHODS: The expression profile of Palm protein in the embryonic, newborn and adult mouse eye as well as dissociated retinal neurons was determined by confocal immunofluorescence. Members of the protein kinase C (PKC) superfamily transduce a myriad of transmembrane signals initiated by the formation of sn-l ,2-diacylglycerol (DAG). As the primary physiological agonist for C] domain containing PKC isoenzymes, DAG functions to regulate the spatial and temporal parameters of PKC activity. It is now recognized that cellular DAG levels can vary from minutes to hours and even days. These observations have suggested a division of PKC functions that correlate to the duration of the cellular DAG signal.
