In this study, we evaluated metabolic changes and the effects of flutamide in 22 women with PCOS. Flutamide was administered for a 6-month period in a dose of 750 mg/day. The basal and after treatment body mass index, waist: hip ratio, blood glucose, insulin, lipids, Ferriman-Gallwey scoring (FGS), gonadotropins, testosterone, trasaminazed and glucose: insulin (G:I) ratio were measured. The t(8;21) between the AML1 and ETO genes is a commonly seen genetic alteration in acute myeloid leukemia. Recently, we reported that the fusion partner ETO binds to the human nuclear receptor co-repressor (NCOR), a member of the NCOR/SIN3/histone deacetylase complex. This complex mediates transcriptional repression as a result of chromatin remodeling. Here, we used a combination of fluorescence in situ hybridization and hybrid panels to localize the human NCOR gene (NCOR) to chromosome band 17p11.2. The position of human NCOR on 17p11 raises the possibility of deranged transcriptional regulation in malignant disorders associated with deletions of 17p.

This paper presents an overview of observational and fish sampling techniques for investigating fish lesions, morbidity and mortality. These sampling techniques and investigations are much like detective work and require attention to detail, common sense, technical proficiency and experience. To solve the mystery of a fish kill, the investigator must use available evidence and clues to piece together a series of events that often have long since passed. Cardiac Troponin T (TnT) is a regulatory contractile protein not normally found in blood. Its detection in the circulation has been shown to be a sensitive and specific marker for myocardial cell damage. This study was designed to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of TnT enzyme immunoassay in detecting myocardial damage in patients with stable angina pectoris undergoing visually successful percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and to compare this newly developed test with the conventionally used cardiac enzyme tests. Lead may exert toxic effects on several organ systems, but those in the lung are the most insidious. Therefore the aim of the present study was to investigate the morphological alterations caused by lead intoxication in rat lungs. It is known that erythrocyte aggregation in renal tissue during preserva-tion is cause of microcirculation defects in the reperfusion period. The aim of our study is to investigate oxidative damage in erythrocytes relative to the time of cold ischemia during organ preservation and relationship between lipid peroxidation and development of these damages. In experiments with a rabbit model, explanted kidneys were exposed to perfusion and 96 hours preservation with Euro-Collins (EC) in the 1st group, and University of Wisconsin (UW) solution in the 2nd group. In this study we investigated the effect of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on tear secretion in rats. The animals were anesthetized intraperitoneally (ip) with urethane (1,2g/kg). The treatment was injected subcutaneously (s.c.). Tear samples were collected by folding a 5 mm section of a Schirmer strip over the lower lid margin to absorb tear fluid from the lower conjunctival sac for 5 min. In this study; inhibitory and bactericidal activities of cefoperazone + sulbactam against Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were determined in two studies first in 1992 and second in 1994. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values were determined by following the microdilution method recommended by NCCLS (Approved Standard M7-A2 1990) protocol. P.aeruginosa strains were isolated from different clinical materials. Purpose: Acne vulgaris is a disease with no known ocular involvement and is most commonly seen in the younger population. The aim of this study was to examine the ocular surfaces of acne vulgaris patients with no ocular signs and symptoms by impression cytology. Methods: The study groups included 74 eyes of 37 acne vulgaris patients and 28 eyes of 14 healthy control subjects from the same age group. The use of sublingual captopril and nifedipine has been indicated in hypertensive emergencies and in patients with essential hypertension, with the assumption that by this route, there would be a faster absorption and thus a more rapid effect on blood pressure (BP) than by the oral route. There are both histomorphometric and nonhistomorphometric studies confirming that etidronate reduces bone resorption. In this study, we have examined urinary Calcium/Creatinine ratio (uCA/Cr) as a biochemical marker of bone turnover to show the effectiveness of etidronate and whether it could be used as a follow-up parameter of treatment. Eighty-one postmenopausal women aged 40 to 65 included into the study to investigate the effects of etidronate on uCa/Cr in a prospective, randomised, placebo controlled clinical trial. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors in the development of total parenteral nutrition associated cholestasis which is a significant clinical problem for pediatric surgeons. Methods: The medical records of 54 neonates who had received total parenteral nutrition for more than two weeks were reviewed retros pectively. Regional odontodisplasia is a developmental anomaly of dental tissues with characteristic clinical, radiographic and histologic appearances. It most commonly affects the maxillary anterior teeth of both the primary and permanent dentition, and occurs in females twice as often as in males. The pathogenesis is unknown. A case of a twelve- year old female with regional odontodisplasia is presented. Although the affected teeth displayed the radiographical and clinical features of odontodisplasia, the patient appeared with significant soft tissue swelling on the anterior region of the mandible.

Chromosome rearrangements are recognized as critical in the pathogenesis of human cancer. Molecular biology and molecular cytogenetics technology have increased our ability to identify genetic alterations in cancer cells. Biological damage mediated by reactive oxygen species has been increasingly recognized in aging phenomena in recent decades. The increase in catecholamine metabolism is yet another physiological change in aging, predisposing the organism to supranormal hydrogen peroxide produc-tion as a by-product. Some genetic diseases may have increased cellular instability. Since chronic myloid leukemia (CML) has a genetic base, we aimed to seek the genetic instability of patients by micronucleus analysis, a mutation screening test which was applied by cytokinesis-blocked (CB) method. In this study, 10 CML patients at diagnosis, were analysed for their micronuclei (MN) frequencies. The values were evaluated in different culture conditions of blood and bone marrow cells. In this prospective study, we found that 21.80% (29/133) of nosocomial urinary tract infections (NUTis) were caused by Escherichia coli, 12.78% (17/133) by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 10.53% (14/133) by Klebsiella pneumoniae whereas 16.54% (22/133) were caused by coagulase negative staphylococci. The highest susceptibility rate was determined with imipenem among gram negatives (21/28 for non-fermentatives and 65/66 for others); and with vancomycin (30/30) and pristinamycin (29/30) among gram positives. On the other hand, the lowest susceptibilities were to amoxicilin (7/66), amoxicilin clavulonat (18/66) and cotrimoxazole (27/66) among gram negatives other than non-fermentatives. This study was designed to evaulate the effects of reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament on cartilage collagen and proteoglycan metabolism. Proteoglycan fragments (PF) and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) levels were assessed in synovial fluids aspirated from 17 patients preoperatively and at 1 st month postoperatively. Synovial fluids of 10 healthy knee served as controls. Both MMP-1 and proteoglycan fragments were found significantly elevated in pathological knees preoperatively with compare to control. The postoperative levels of MMP-1 and proteoglycans were also significantly higher than preoperative and control values. Gnotobiotic piglets were inoculated intralaryngeally with swine Chlamydia trachomatis strain R33 or orally with swine C. trachmatis strain R27. Archived formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from piglets euthanatized 4–7 days postinoculation were examined by in situ hybridization for C. trachomatis nucleic acid using a nonradioactive digoxigenin-labeled DNA probes that targeted specific ribosomal RNA or omp1 mRNA molecules of the swine C. trachomatis strains. Positive hybridization signals were detected in bronchial epithelial cells, bronchiolar epithelial cells, pneumocytes, alveolar and interstitial macrophages, and jejunal and ileal enterocytes. The development of an effective therapy for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is one of the primary goals of all DMD/Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD) research. Golden Retriever Muscular Dystrophy (GRMD), an animal model of DMD is a fatal degenerative myopathy. Unlike the mdx model, the GRMD dog more accurately reflects the phenotype shown by human DMG patients, making the model better suited for the investigation and assessment of potential therapeutic approaches. The GRMD mutation, a base change from A to G in the 3' splice acceptor site of intron 6, results in exon 7 skipping which disrupts the translational reading frame. …
