An Investigation On Adherence Of Cryptococcusneoformans Serotypes (A, B, C And D) In Ratlung Cell Culture, Şinasi Taner Yildiran, Hüseyin Gün

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Cryptococcus neoformans causes an opportunistic infection known as cryptococcosis principally in immunocompromised individuals. It is not clearly known whether the serotype of the infecting strain of Cryptococcus neoformans has its own properties related to its adherence to host tissues in disease process. Here, the adherence of each serotype (A, B, C, and D) was investigated using primary rat lung cell culture in a timedependent manner. After the confluent monolayer of primary rat lung cell culture was obtained, the adherence assay was performed. The mean binding index (Bl) value of serotype D was statistically significant(p0.05). These findings suggest that the adherence …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Meningiomas are well known for their diverse histological apperance. Although generally considered benign, their behaviour is unpredictable and characterized by frequent recurrences. Histopathological features associated with aggressive behaviour have been described, but even the World Health Organization (WHO) grading system provides broad criteria for malignancy. Mahmood et al. described a scoring system, based on 6 histopathological features, establishing objective criteria. In this study, 73 specimens from 61 cases which were diagnosed as meningioma have been reviewed and scored by the criteria described by Mahmood et al. in order to search for the availability of the application of the system. Effects Of The N-Ras Oncogene On The Expression Of Other Cellular Genes In Co25 Myoblast Cells, Hülya Zeyti̇noğlu, Ian Gibson

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The effects of the N- ras oncogene on the transcription levels of c- myc, p53, c-K-ras and b-actin genes have been investigated by Northern blotting in a cell line which normally differentiates into myotubes. Treatment of cells with dexamethasone activates N- ras gene, then cells proliferate and form foci. The transcription level of c- myc gene was generally high during transformation whereas c-K- ras mRNAs levels were high during differentiation. Following induction of the N- ras oncogene, the level of c-myc mRNA first decreased in two days and then increased in three and four days. During differentiation, c-K- ras mRNA …

Effects Of Acute Hypothyroidism On Brainstemauditory Evoked Potentials (Baeps), Metin Özata, Abdullah Özkardeş, M. Ali Gündoğan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Although functional alterations in the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nerves are well documented in overt hypothyroidism, little is known about alterations of CNS in acute hypothyroidism. Sixteen patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma were studied when prepared for radioiodine scanning after stopping levothyroxine (LT 4 ) therapy for 6 weeks to determine whether acute hypothyroidism leads to alteration in brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs). Repeat BAEPs were performed on the same patients at 6 months of the following L-T 4 therapy when patients were eu-thyroid. Neurophysiological findings were compared with a group of 20 normal controls with no hystory …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Benchekroun hydraulic ileal valve and hipple valve techniques are widely used continent valve systems in recontructive urology, We compared continence, catheterizability and complications of the nipple and Benchekroun hydraulic ileal valve ruling out the inherent error of comparing different reservoirs under different conditions. A pouch was constructed with two methods present side by side. Comparable data from each valve were statistically evaluated through Mann-Whitney U test. Although the rate of complications such as dessusception and difficult catheterization for each valve are close, leakage of the Benchekroun hydraulic ileal valve was observed at significantly higher pouch volumes than in the nipple …

Controversy On Prophylactic Oophorectomy, Utku Özcan, Didem Akyol, Selma Oransay, Murat Ekin, Tayfun Güngör, Oya Gökmen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The merits of prophylactic oophorectomy at the time of hysterectomy have been debated for many years. The most compelling argument for prophylactic removal of the ovaries has always been the prevention of ovarian cancer (2). Prophylactic oophorectomy has advantages and disadvantages. The actual incidence of cancer in retained ovaries is difficult to estimate. The advantages of prophylactic oophorectomy include the prevention of ovarian cancer, the alleviation of symptoms from residual ovary syndrome and the elimination of the need for reoperation for adnexal disease (2). Disadvantages include surgical castration, which results in the need for hormone replacement, and changes in self-image …

Neuronal Differentiation In The Cerebral Cortexof The Rat: A Golgi-Cox Study, Necdet Demi̇r, Ramazan Demi̇r

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The development of cerebral cortex neurons has been studied in different stages of pre- and postnatal periods of rats. In order to show the neuronal processes, the Golgi-Cox impregnation technique was used. The first neuronal process development was observed in the cranial and caudal poles of the cerebral cortex during the 15th prenatal day and continued spreading from the lateral regions and poles towards the dorsocentral regions of the hemispheres. The cells which showed the first impregnation in the cerebral cortex, were bipolar cells and their bodies were located in the deep regions of the hemisphere wall. Primitive multipolar cells, …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Imipenem, a very potent carbapenem derivative beta-lactam antibiotic, has recently found a major place in the treatment of antibiotic-resistant nosocomial infections. However, a convulsive side effect is seen in 0.2-3 percent of patients. Although it is suggested that this effect is due to the inhibition of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) mediated inhibitory transmission, no study has been reported so far showing its effect on the cerebral cortex free inhibitory and excitatory amino acid levels. Twenty-one male TO albino mice were divided into three equal groups and given therapeutic (40 mg/kg/day) or excessive (500 mg/kg/day) doses of Imipenem/cilastatine (I/C) or saline solution …
