According to data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the optometric workforce is projected to grow over the next decade. This mixed-methods study investigated the motivations and experiences of Health Mentors (HMs), community volunteers with chronic health conditions who participated in the Health Mentors Program at Thomas Jefferson University (HMP). During the 18-month three-module program, HMs work with interprofessional teams of healthcare students as they learn about teaming principles and experiences of patients living with chronic conditions. 73 HMs whose time volunteering for HMP ranged from 1 to 15 years completed a survey following module 2 in the Spring of 2020. This study presents a longitudinal analysis of the qualitative experiences and quantitative outcomes associated with integrative, interdisciplinary teaching in the context of a specific nursing course, Pathophysiology (NURS 337), at a public, 4-year, state college (now university). Spanning an 8-year period, from 2014–2022, the research compares two distinct student cohorts: one exposed to collaborative interdisciplinary teaching methods, the other to traditional non-collaborative instructional approaches. The findings reveal that integrative, interdisciplinary teaching yielded significant benefits across multiple metrics. Notably, integrative, interdisciplinary teaching contributed to a more normalized distribution of grades, higher student retention rates, and an elevated cumulative GPA at the …

Head and neck cancer treatment frequently results in long-term severe swallowing deficits, often requiring feeding tube dependency. The United States has long addressed physician shortages by recruiting international medical graduates (IMGs), often from low- and- middle income countries. This "brain drain" deprives already fragile health systems and adds to worldwide health disparities. New state legislation has eased licensing standards for IMGs and generated variable training pathways creating patient safety risk in underserved groups. Introduction: Hospital discharge is a complex process plagued with medical errors and poor coordination. Disjointed discharges are detrimental to Appalachian patients with access barriers and multiple chronic diseases. Telehealth is a tool used to improve access within rural Appalachia. To address this high-risk transition period, an interprofessional team deployed telemedicine to improve post-hospital care for Appalachian patients.

Purpose: Patients with uncontrolled chronic medical conditions were enrolled into the Intensive Telemedicine Transition of Care Clinic (I-TTC) with a primary outcome of 30-day Emergency Department (ED) presentations and hospital readmissions. While national incidence is approximately 1.5%, institutional rates may vary due to provider experience, documentation practices, and patient factors. Many preoperative and postoperative cataract patients struggle with comprehending the use of prescription medication as directed. Language barriers and low health literacy levels are major factors contributing to improper use of prescriptions. To increase patients comprehension, the Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute employed an educational intervention consisting of a live presentation and an instructional video. Results found that 44% of patients were hesitant to ask questions to clinical staff, 32% felt overwhelmed, and nearly 70% lacked confidence in using their prescribed eye drops. Problem: Medication technicians have minimal formal training and education in medication administration. Insufficient knowledge and a lack of confidence present safety concerns, such as medication errors, which decrease the quality of patient care.

Context: The setting is an assisted living facility in the San Francisco Peninsula that provides around-the-clock patient care, promoting independence in a safe and home-like environment for 53 patients.

Problem: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a persistent concern in assisted living facilities, often resulting from inconsistent hand hygiene practices. Although national guidelines exist, adherence remains suboptimal, especially where staff training and compliance monitoring are limited.

Context: This project took place in a 53-bed assisted living facility without a formal system to track or reinforce hand hygiene. The aim was to improve staff knowledge and promote infection prevention through education.

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of a standardized onboarding program on Advanced Practice Provider (APP) retention and productivity within an academic department.

Background: High APP turnover in specialized settings disrupts care and leads to financial losses. Previously, onboarding lacked structure, leading to early attrition and delayed productivity. A 24-week phased, competency-based orientation program was developed to improve retention, job satisfaction, and clinical performance.

Low back pain accounts for more than 2.6 million emergency department (ED) visits annually, with 40% of Americans experiencing sciatica at some point in their lives. Our case report describes a patient presenting with atraumatic right-sided low back pain and paresthesias in her right leg. We utilized a combination of a transgluteal sciatic nerve block and a lateral femoral cutaneous nerve block to achieve improved pain relief after an initial isolated transgluteal sciatic nerve block left her with persistent anterolateral thigh pain.

No central documentation of care plans exists for children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN) in the electronic health record (EHR). Providers of a large pediatric primary care office in St. Louis Missouri were asked to identify CSHCN in the practice. Clinic nurses completed a comprehensive chart review of the patients identified and constructed care coordination documents using a pre-established smart-text phrase. Subsequently, these were documented centrally in the EHR under the Problem List.

Introduction: The approach to physician well-being has transformed from a focus on identification of distress to embracing a comprehensive model that values vulnerability, growth, self-compassion, and a sense of purpose and community in the profession. This manuscript, a collaborative effort by the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine Well-being Committee and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Wellness Committee, presents the personal narratives of academic emergency physicians during which they faced challenges and stressors, as well as supportive resources they found helpful.
