Title: From Learners to Leaders: A Peer-Led Simulation Program for Anesthesia Procedural Skills Training in Medical Students

Authors: Noah Kos, Ryan Beyers, Chloe Sutlick, Benjamin Sun, Tochi Mbagwu, John D. Mitchell, M.D.

Background: Procedural skill competency is vital in medical education, but limited faculty availability poses challenges. We implemented a peer-led simulation program teaching peripheral IV insertion (PIV) and endotracheal intubation, with a focus on student leadership.

Methods: Sixteen peer educators, trained by attendings, conducted monthly workshops from July-October 2025. Students practiced at PIV and intubation stations, assessed via validated rubrics (17 items for PIV, 21 for intubation; 5-point scale). …

Title: Effect of Pre-Training Patients Using a Self-Directed Slideshow Presentation on Visual Field Reliability in First-Time Test Takers

Authors: Lillian Centlivre BS, Derek Zahnleuter BS, Rahul Babu BS, Chaesik Kim BSEE, Kaitlin Ziadeh MD, Hanna Simmons MD, Vivian Rajeswaren MD, Aleksey Parker Williams DO, Jacob Im MD, Aleksey Mishulin MD, Faisal Ridha Al-Timimi MD, Hassan Tokko MD

Background: Visual field (VF) testing is essential for detecting glaucoma, but reliability is limited by patient inexperience and poor fixation. Prior studies report VF test reliability around 59%, primarily attributed to increased fixation loss (FL). Other studies note 75.9% reliability using training videos …

Title: Patient and Healthcare Provider Knowledge of Exercise During Pregnancy.

Authors: Leone, R., Kim, S., Sharma, V., Swain, M.

Introduction:

Physical activity before and during pregnancy can significantly improve pregnancy outcomes. ACOG’s evidence-based recommendations help healthcare providers (HCPs) educate patients regarding the benefits of exercise during pregnancy. However, many patients do not engage in regular physical activity. We aim to determine how provider counseling on exercise per ACOG recommendations impacts patients’ exercise and perception of exercise during pregnancy.

Methods:

This is a survey study of HCPs offering prenatal and postpartum care, and pregnant patients. HCPs were given surveys …

Assessment Of Breastfeeding Education In Medical Training, Saranya Madan, Abigail Kuplicki Mar 2024

Assessment Of Breastfeeding Education In Medical Training, Saranya Madan, Abigail Kuplicki

Medical Student Research Symposium

In 2019, the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine issued a revised set of educational objectives for medical trainees at various stages of education. In this statement, objectives for medical school were broken down into preclinical and clinical training objectives. In this project, our goal is to assess the degree to which medical training at Wayne State University School of Medicine is addressing these aims.

The assessment of breastfeeding education is accomplished by surveying medical students at various stages of training (M1-M4) and eliciting their level of confidence in and understanding of the topics outlined in the objectives by the Academy of …

Title- Patient Versus Employee Perspective on the Climate of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Henry Ford Emergency Department

Abstract

Background- The Emergency department is a unique environment unlike any other within the healthcare system since it is one of the, if not the only department in our current system where patients regardless of their insurance status, socioeconomic status, ability to pay for services rendered are provided high-quality care. As a result, the ED often reflects many of societies' disenfranchised and marginalized populations. This study takes a deep dive into the perspectives of both patients and Employees regarding …

Medical Student Mock Interview And Diabetes Education During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Ajith Thomas, Kendahl Oberdorfer, Suma Alzouhayli Jun 2022

Medical Student Mock Interview And Diabetes Education During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Ajith Thomas, Kendahl Oberdorfer, Suma Alzouhayli

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background: The Diabetes Education and Wellness (DEW) clinic is an interprofessional, student-run free clinic that promotes education and autonomy in diabetes management for underserved communities. When pandemic restrictions prevented in-person clinic visits, DEW opted instead to meet their patients virtually. DEW coordinators from the school of medicine designed a primer course to teach skills and medical knowledge that directly impacts diabetes management to ensure continued care of our patients.

Methods: The two components of the intervention were mock interviews and diabetes education. Medical students who previously volunteered at DEW were recruited to provide mock interviews. First year medical students were …

Language Concordance In Medicine And The Need For Medical Schools To Require Taking A Foreign Language As An Intervention Method To Minimize Language Barriers In The U.S., Mary K. Yousif Dec 2020

Language Concordance In Medicine And The Need For Medical Schools To Require Taking A Foreign Language As An Intervention Method To Minimize Language Barriers In The U.S., Mary K. Yousif

Honors College Theses

During medical school future student doctors are exposed to a multitude of patients, both natives and non-natives. However, there is no course offering (such as a foreign language or culture class) provided within the curriculum that prepares them for these future interactions. With communication being one of the primary skills used in healthcare, it is imperative to discuss the effects it can cause on a patient if not established. Overall, the goal of this research is to conduct a literary investigation regarding this matter and educate the medical community about the importance of providing effective communication in medicine. This begins …

Clinical Research in Practice: The Journal of Team Hippocrates

Clinical decision science, a newly identified area of scholarship, describes how clinical research is used for a patient, within the context of their unique social conditions. We hypothesize that physicians use sociocultural context as an important input to their decision making. We performed a prospective, randomized, double-blind mixed methods study. Family medicine faculty and residents at a community hospital family medicine residency were included in the study. After academic journal club discussing a primary research paper, physicians were asked if they would prescribe medication for a patient who was similar to the subjects in a research paper. However, social and …

Evidence Doesn’T Change Prescribing Patterns…So What Does?, Ali Rida, Anthony Brooks

Clinical Research in Practice: The Journal of Team Hippocrates

The authors write in support of critical analysis of clinical research, as a corrective to the physician's urge to "do something" even when no evidence of benefit exists.

Quality? Safety? Stop Being Naïve., Rana K. Zaban Do, Steven Istephan, Jonathan Serman Md

Clinical Research in Practice: The Journal of Team Hippocrates

The first day of our inpatient medicine rotation, the Emergency Department (ED) admitted a patient to a general medical floor without notifying our rounding team. We used the institution’s system improvement tracking software to draw attention to communication breakdown in the interest of patient safety. This piece illustrates how there is a prominent hierarchy in medicine; it is inherent to the framework of the way in which hospitals function. A discussion ensues with our attending physician supervisor on our patient medicine service. During this discussion, we ponder whether it is possible to impact quality and safety from our position as …
