Library Scholarly Publications

To maintain awareness of current medical evidence and clinical practice guidelines in order to provide the best possible patient care, physicians must be able to locate, critically evaluate, synthesize, and make clinical decisions based on health information from multiple digital sources. Concerningly, however, medical students and junior doctors have been found to exhibit poor information literacy skills, including an inability to conduct efficient literature searches, find randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews, or evaluate study quality. Here, we describe our medical library’s experience in administering the Health version of the Research Readiness Self-Assessment (RRSA) tool to two cohorts of first-year …

Wise-Family Medicine: A Statewide Faculty Development Collaborative, Deborah Simpson, Kjersti Knox, Anne Getzin, John R. Brill, Melissa M. Stiles, Jeffrey A. Morzinski

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Background: In many states, family medicine residencies and medical schools compete clinically for patients, educationally for trainees and, more recently, for community preceptors (CPs). As Wisconsin’s medical schools and health care systems have expanded their geographic footprints, our CPs now teach trainees from competing institutions. Yet residency and medical student accrediting bodies require faculty and preceptor development.

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of a statewide collaborative of family medicine educators on meeting faculty development needs of our CPs and collaborative members.

Methods: Faculty development leaders representing the three largest family medicine residency training sponsors in the state created the Wisconsin …

Contribution Of Medical Education To Rural Health, Roger Y. Wong Oct 2016

Contribution Of Medical Education To Rural Health, Roger Y. Wong

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Rural health is an important priority in many jurisdictions as an example of social accountability. The choice to practice in a rural community can be influenced by personal factors, educational factors, and systemic factors. Medical education makes significant contribution to rural health by proactively and positively modifying the educational factors. The experience of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia, Canada is used to illustrate how this can be accomplished. A multi-component approach that is tailored to address the personal and systemic determinants of rural practice must also be developed to maximize the positive impact of medical …

Academic Medicine Responds To The Opioid Crisis, John Prescott

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Opioid dependence has devastated communities across the nation particularly in rural states and academic medicine has responded in a variety of ways. Through its tripartite mission of education, research, and clinical care, creative solutions are being implanted. Medical schools and teaching hospitals are partnering with public health and law enforcement agencies, as well as local healthcare providers to address the clinical, social, and rehabilitative challenges. Academic medicine continues to adapt to the needs of the nation and teach, train, and prepare the next generation of physicians to be at their best when things are at their worst.

The United States Medical Licensing Exam (Usmle) And Medical Student Wellness: An Ethnographic Qualitative Study At Cooper Medical School Of Rowan University, Patricia Davis Vanston Aug 2016

The United States Medical Licensing Exam (Usmle) And Medical Student Wellness: An Ethnographic Qualitative Study At Cooper Medical School Of Rowan University, Patricia Davis Vanston

Theses and Dissertations

Research indicates that medical students experience unusually high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and loss of empathy while in medical school. As the number of medical students rises and residency positions remain stagnant, the USMLE receives greater emphasis as a barometer to determine residency placement and future career paths thereby increasing levels of stress among students. Stress is associated with diminished self-care, potentially leading to a negative impact on well-being. This ethnographic, qualitative study sought to examine the extent to which the anticipation of, preparation for, and implications of the USMLE contribute to medical student stress, wellness, and self-care. Through …

Challenges Experienced By Korean Medical Students And Tutors During Problem-Based Learning: A Cultural Perspective, Hyunjung Ju, Ikseon Choi, Byoung Doo Rhee, Jong Tae-Lee

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

How people learn is influenced by the cultural contexts in which their learning occurs. This qualitative case study explored challenges Korean medical students and tutors experienced during their PBL sessions from a cultural perspective using Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. Twelve preclinical medical students and nine tutors from a large Korean medical school participated in interviews. The interview data were analyzed using the constant comparative method and classified according to Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. Twenty-two themes emerged within the following overarching categories: large power distance (6 themes), high uncertainty avoidance (6), individualism (3), collectivism (4), and masculinity/short-term orientation (3). This article discusses culturally …

Effect Of Photographs Of Visible Genetic Conditions On Quality Of Life Perceptions, Christina Falugi May 2016

Effect Of Photographs Of Visible Genetic Conditions On Quality Of Life Perceptions, Christina Falugi

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Historically, medical photographs are used to demonstrate dysmorphic features and characteristic presentations of genetic conditions. Traditional, pictorial depictions of genetic conditions typically involve nude subjects against walls to emphasize their features. These stark, black and white photographs may negatively influence students’ perceptions of the depicted individual. Natural photographs which include individuals in non-clinical environments may impact perceptions. To assess the influence of photographs on a viewer’s perception, 649 students from medical, nursing, genetic counseling and dental programs were surveyed in a cross-over study. Students were randomized to view a traditional or a natural photograph of three distinct genetic conditions followed …

One Model Of Collaborative Learning For Medical And Law Students At The University Of Baltimore And Johns Hopkins University, Gregory Dolin, Natalie Ram Mar 2016

One Model Of Collaborative Learning For Medical And Law Students At The University Of Baltimore And Johns Hopkins University, Gregory Dolin, Natalie Ram

All Faculty Scholarship

Medicine, like law, is sometimes referred to as a “conservative” profession, as both can change slowly, stifling innovation. While the art of medicine has produced important advances, there is at least one part of medicine that has not changed much in more than 100 years. Nearly all American medical schools have followed much the same educational model since Abraham Flexner published his famous report on the state of American medical education in 1910. The educational model promoted by that report emphasizes teaching students the science of medicine, but it is not well equipped for teaching students about the practicalities of …

Justice And Care: Decision Making Of Medical School Student Promotions Committees, Emily Paige Green Jan 2016

Justice And Care: Decision Making Of Medical School Student Promotions Committees, Emily Paige Green

Educational Studies Dissertations

Accreditation standards for allopathic medical schools in the United States require that each institution have in place a mechanism by which student progress through the curriculum is monitored. These entities, referred to here as promotions committees, make important decisions in a high stakes medical education environment. Yet little is currently known about how promotions committee members make decisions about students who experience academic failures and lapses in professional behavior. Using the work of Lawrence Kohlberg and Carol Gilligan on moral development as a theoretical basis, the purpose of this study was to elucidate committee members’ perceptions of the role of …

Women In White: A Retrospective Look At Medical Education At One School Before Title Ix, Karen Clancy Jan 2016

Women In White: A Retrospective Look At Medical Education At One School Before Title Ix, Karen Clancy

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation

The Women in White generation of women physicians who graduated from American medical schools between World War II and the enactment of Title IX were trailblazers. They successfully pursued and achieved physician careers during a time when doctoring was still considered “man’s work.” They helped to clear a path to a modern medical student culture where women and men had more choices.

In a 2008 oral history interview, Dr. Jacqueline Noonan, world-renowned pediatric cardiologist, discoverer of the congenital heart condition known as “Noonan Syndrome,” and the first woman appointed to a chairman role at the University of Kentucky College of …

“I Just Need To Get Myself Supervised:” Exploring Transformative Learning In The Development Of Professionalism Among Physicians In The First Year Of Graduate Medical Education, Elizabeth P. Marlowe

Theses and Dissertations

The study explored the learning experiences of first-year resident physicians during the first year of graduate medical education. The experiences of four intern physicians in the first year of residency training at an urban academic health system provided the site for the research. An exploratory case study research design was employed to examine the learning experiences of these new physicians. A qualitative approach was used to analyze data from interviews and ethnographic observations. The findings of this research study provide evidence surrounding how and what these physician trainees learned regarding professionalism during the first year of residency training.

The findings …
