Advances in Cancer Education and Quality Improvement
Accrediting agencies recommend safe and accurate transfer of clinical information during care transitions. At our institution, a tertiary care cancer hospital, ambulatory clinic providers use multiple methods for communicating essential information to emergency care providers. Therefore, we initiated a quality improvement project using a standardized electronic handoff during the transfer of care between providers at outpatient clinics and acute cancer care centers. The project was launched in May 2023 and aimed to achieve electronic handoff for 70% or more of ambulatory care patients transferred to emergency care by October 2023. A multidisciplinary team developed an electronic handoff, provided training, and …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Purpose/Background
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend one-time human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) screening for all adolescents. Pediatric primary care providers are on the front lines of adolescent healthcare and can provide testing that is adolescent-friendly, confidential, and easily accessible. This scoping review aims to synthesize the evidence and assess the literature on the efficacy of using an opt-out script to increase HIV testing in adolescent well-child checks.
Methods
A literature review was conducted between October 2022 and August 2024 to collect studies assessing adolescents aged 12-18, provider-led sex education, and …

Men’S Preconception Health: Impact On Pregnancy And Awareness Strategies., Kara I. Carr
Honors Capstones
Men’s preconception health plays a critical role in pregnancy outcomes, but it continues to be overlooked in healthcare education. While women are routinely counseled by OBGYN providers on how nutrition, lifestyle, and chronic conditions can affect fertility, men often receive little to no guidance from their primary care providers. This project uses a literature review to look deeper into how limited awareness and involvement in men’s preconception health may impact pregnancy and infant health outcomes. The gap is linked to cultural norms, healthcare practices, and the lack of clear resources for men. This research aims to develop strategies that promote …

Decreasing Extubation Times Using Adaptive Support Ventilation: A Scoping Review, Daphne Thomas, Cole Vest, Luke Wilson, Shannon Witcher, Bobby Bellflower Dnsc, Nnp-Bc, Faanp
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Purpose/Background:This scoping review explores the effectiveness of adaptive support ventilation (ASV) compared to conventional ventilation modes in reducing postoperative extubation times in adults undergoing general anesthesia with ventilatory support. Ventilator weaning is a critical determinant of recovery and outcomes in intensive care settings. ASV, a closed-loop ventilation mode, automatically adjusts ventilator parameters based on patient-specific respiratory mechanics and demand to optimize the weaning process. Although promising, evidence regarding ASV’s effectiveness remains inconsistent across different patient populations and surgical contexts.

Retention Rate Of The Human Performance Course In Flight Training, Ahmet Uğur Avcı, Erdinç Ercan
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
Pilots are obliged to accurately assess a situation that poses a risk to flight safety and take the necessary corrective action. The theoretical knowledge in flight training is essential to accomplish this. The objective of the study is to ascertain the retention rate of the human performance (HP) course and to determine the necessity of refresher training. Sixteen questions were prepared for pre- and post-tests about the atmosphere, hypoxia and hyperventilation, barotrauma, and spatial disorientation. After completion of the pre-test, participants were instructed to watch the online training video covering the same HP subjects, and finally, a post-test was administered …

Fundamentals Of Vascular Surgery: A Plan For The Uniform Instruction And Assessment Of Basic Skills In Vascular Surgery, Priscilla Tanamal, Claudie Sheahan, Malachi Sheahan
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
Training surgeons poses many unique challenges. In addition to the clinical acumen that must be learned, a minimum threshold of technical competency is a requisite for independent practice. The trends of endovascular interventions and open surgical procedures add another layer of complexity to vascular surgery training. Simulation can provide a solution for both technical skills training and evaluating proficiency. The Education Committee of the Association of Program Directors of Vascular Surgery (APDVS) developed the Fundamentals of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery platform to provide an opportunity for more uniform basic technical skill teaching and assessment across all vascular training programs. Evaluation …

ABSTRACT
Purpose: Empathy is important in providing healthcare and should be formed and evaluated during healthcare education. The purpose of these studies was to assess reliability and validity of a no-cost empathy scale and its cognitive and affective subscales in health professions students. Method: For reliability, students in six programs received two administrations of the Kiersma-Chen Empathy Scale (KCES). A blind researcher analyzed data, using Cronbach’s α to assess homogeneity for total and subscale scores, and Pearson correlation to assess association between subscales and total scores. Two-way intraclass correlation coefficients with random effects were used to determine total and subscale …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Blood pressure (BP) assessment is a key component of pre-participation examinations and can aid athletic trainers (ATs) in diagnosing hypertension. However, the current pedagogical technique, which involves practicing BP assessment on healthy individuals, may not adequately prepare healthcare providers to recognize Korotkoff sounds at abnormal pressures during clinical practice. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine AT's ability to and confidence in assessing and interpreting BP using a high-fidelity simulator.
Methods: We recruited ATs through conferences, in-services, and postprofessional athletic training programs. In total, 100 ATs from various job settings (age=31±11 years; men=37, women=63, clinical experience=8±10 years; …

All In A Day’S Work: Using Simulation To Prepare Athletic Training Students For Clinical Practice, Matthew Donahue, Hannah L. Stedge
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Athletic training educators must prepare students to transition to practice as competent clinicians. Authentic, diverse patient interactions at clinical sites may not occur for all students to prepare them for their career demands. Utilizing simulations in athletic training education may improve students’ transition to practice, but little research has examined interventions to prepare students for a team-based work environment. This paper describes the development process and perceived impact of a student, team-focused athletic training simulation educational technique. Method: This cohort study employed a quasi-experimental research design. A holistic, four-unit athletic training simulation capstone project was designed for final-semester athletic …
